The Andalucia region

On the left of the road that comes from Ronda leaving behind a rocky peak, we can see with surprise that some white marks appear on the top of the green mountains, villages in the middle of the nature that during autumn gets the typical color of the foliage of the chestnut trees and during winter, present the color of the almond flowers.
Welcome to the Valley of Genal!

Benalauria

The municipality of Benalauria has found its place in a very steep slope of this valley, at 600 mts high. From here, it has developed its own way, singular and authentic.
Once in the central square, let your imagination
find the best way to enjoy the winding streets and charming plazas of this village that keeps the mark of the Berber colonization, and whose name makes reference to the Banu L-Hawariya ...
The enterprising tour of Benalauria guides us along the Calle Alta until the Etnographic Museum, a local initiative of the Cooperativa La Molienda. This ancient mill for making olive oil has three centuries of history and nowadays it is a folk museum, where you can see the ancient mill and the beam of the Arab press.
You have to be prepared for a long journey because in Benalauria there are nine cooperatives: some make handicrafts, produce wood, ceramic, wrought iron, others are dedicated to the construction, food products and restaurants and accommodation. This year, the Fair of Ecologic Livestock, organized for the first time in Siete Pilas, was a real innovation for the region.
You can also visit the Moorish and Christian House, a center of interpretation of the main party of the village, with exhibitions for the visitors; this initiative was born with the idea to revitalize this party and to wake up the interest for the local culture.
The Congress Centre inaugurated this year is a promotion space designed for business or personal initiatives and a congress and meetings place.
Before starting your pilgrimage, get mixed with the people and ask where to taste the hot gazpacho (soup made with tomatoes, peppers, etc), the sweet 13 “castañas en almibar” (chestnut in syrup), the stew
with wild herbs or the vegetable stew with fennel
and chickpeas, typical dishes of Benalauria.
To enjoy the popular Benalauria means to walk around the Fresnillo, the high neighborhood with genuine corners and ancient elements for the construction. In this village, the little white houses welcome tourists from their old wooden doors and the entrances with flowers disposed in cork vessels.
After having visited the Santo Domingo church, dat- ing from the XVIII century and well preserved, walk along Calle Estacion to get to the Plazoleta, one of the most charming squares in the village.
The party in Benalauria gets inaugurated the first Sunday in August with the Party of Moorish and Christians; this is a street theatrical performance, which reminds of the rebellion of the Mudejar of Sierra Bermeja in 1501.
October is the month of a popular festival when you can try delicious chestnuts.
