The Yorkshire region

The Yorkshire Dales: Covering an area of 680 square miles the Yorkshire Dales National Park is renowned for its outstanding landscape from magnificent high fells to riverside meadows. The Dales are perfect for walking whether you like a leisurely riverside walk or something more strenuous. The area is also very popular with cyclists as there is a fantastic network of quiet roads and cycling trails for all abilities to explore. The Dales are made up of a number of individual dales, for example Wensleydale and Swaledale and each "dale" or valley has its own distinct character.

Bellerby area

Boar Cottage is situated in Wensleydale , known as the waterfalls dale in view of the number of falls in the dale. The most famous are probably the well known beauty spot of Aysgarth Falls and Hardraw Force, the latter being the largest single drop waterfall in England at about 100 feet high (33 metres)

The cottage is only a few minutes driving distance from the popular small market town of Leyburn with its shops pubs and restaurants. A couple of minutes walk from the market place is the well known Leyburn Shawl where Mary Queen of Scots is reputed to have lost her shawl during her escape from the nearby Bolton Castle. The view from the Shawl is considered by many to be one of the finest views in the Dales. The Wensleydale Railway, an authentic heritage railway, has a station at Leyburn. The railway line runs along the dale for about 16 miles (27kms) and a steam service operates at certain times in summer.

A few minutes drive from Leyburn is Middleham with its 12th century Norman castle that was the childhood home of King Richard III. It is also well known for its many horse racing training establishments and you can watch the horses train on the local gallops. With the magnificent scenery in the background it is an impressive sight!

Near to Middleham is the Forbidden Corner which, with its unique labyrinth of tunnels, chambers, follies and surprises, makes a great family day out. There is even a theme park for the kids (Lightwater Valley) within driving distance for a day out

Within easy reach by car are a number of castles and abbeys notably Fountains Abbey, which is a World Heritage Site.

A number of agricultural shows take place in the Dales each year including Wensleydale Show Leyburn 27th August 2016 (located less than a mile from Boar Cottage), Reeth Show 29th August 2016.

“Home From Home”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2015

Boar Cottage is a very comfortable and peaceful holiday let set in the very beautiful Yorkshire Dales, and it is a really good central location from which to explore the surrounding delights and countryside. David and Bernie are a genuinely nice couple who ensure that their guests have the best stay possible, providing nice touches on arrival including home made bread and a nice bottle of wine to help wash it down. They provide considerable information on places to visit catering for all age ranges and all tastes and they are always available to offer advice and suggestions. We did a lot of travelling across the dales during our wonderful week in Yorkshire and we always looked forward to going 'home' to Boar Cottage in the evening.

“Beautiful, clean, cosy cottage. Lovely hosts. Highly recommend.”

Boar Cottage is in a perfect location, lots of lovely walks and things to do nearby. Secure garden for the dog. The hosts were lovely, we were greeted with wine, juice and sweets for kids, cake, homemade bread, milk and even treats for the dog. The cottage is extremely well equipped. Lots of information in the cottage on places to go, things to do, places to eat, walks etc etc. We didn't want to come home. Only negative was it was already booked for the dates we needed in the summer. We will definitely go back!

“Very good, will definitely be back”

Excellent cottage. Very welcoming owners - fresh bread, cake, wine, and dog treats for Molly! The cottage is ideal if you have a dog, as the field at the rear of the cottage is perfect for exercising your dog. The wood burning stove added an extra atmosphere to the place. We will certainly come here again. I have already recommended it to friends.

“Delightful in the Dales”

Boar Cottage is an ideal base for your Yorkshire Dales holiday. It is set back from the main road and therefore is very quiet. It is cosy, clean and the owners are extremely welcoming, providing those added extras to make your trip away a real treat. The kitchen is very well equipped, the best I've seen in a self catering cottage. Log burner in the sitting room is a must for any winter months, making a cosy cottage that little bit more cosy, (the complimentary basket of logs was a lovely gesture). Will be recommending to friends.

“A fabulous cottage. Would highly recommend.”

We thoroughly enjoyed our first visit to Bellerby and the Yorkshire Dales which was made even more complete with our stay at Boar Cottage. A delightful property with the most enormous garden for our 2 boys to run around in. Bernie and David made us incredibly welcome with great advice on local attractions (Forbidden Corner went down a treat) and very welcome treats on arrival (the home made bread also went down a treat). The cottage is fabulous with everything needed for our short stay. A definite place to stay on our next visit.

“Lovely, cosy cottage in a fantastic location”

Reviewed 7 Aug 2013

Myself, my husband, 2 boys (aged 9 & 13) and the dog had a lovely 4 nights at Boar Cottage. Everything we wanted in a cottage, plenty of space, lots of furniture, crockery, equipment etc, nice location, beautiful countryside and very accommodating owners who are more than helpful. We had some pretty walks, along the Pennine Way, rivers, footpaths and were blessed with nice weather, so were able to BBQ in the evenings in the lovely cottage garden. We will definitely be returning again soon. The Gray family from Nottingham

“Excellent in every way!”

Lovely, thoughtfully and very well equipped cottage. Spotlessly clean and cosy. Friendly welcome from the owners with beautiful freshly baked bread, cake, wine and even dog treats. Quiet location perfect for exploring the Yorkshire Dales. No faults at all.

Third visit to the cottage and as good as always - very clean, comfy and with great hosts (plus Poppy :-) ) who made us very welcome and go the extra mile, providing treats on arrival and tips on where to visit. We enjoyed perfect weather so were able to use the BBQ and garden

“Wonderful cottage; excellent facilities, very clean, great 'welcome' pack and friendly, helpful hosts.”

Location ideal for touring the Dales. The cottage is excellent; very clean, top facilities, everything you need and more besides - great attention to detail. Hosts are very helpful and friendly without being intrusive - and the welcome pack of fresh baked bread, milk, cake and wine is an added bonus! For those with dogs, a great field behind the property provides ample exercise.
