Description

This single story villa is located in a traffic free, level location only 2 minutes walk from the Abbey car park in the centre of the village. This is an old property and restoration is an on-going process with the latest improvements including air conditioning, four posted beds with fully fitted mosquito nets, comfortable, traditional furnishings and television monitor with integral DVD player and extensive film library.

Unusually light and spacious for a village home with many windows on all sides, high ceilings and full length French doors to the front terrace with uninterrupted sweeping views down to the coast below and on a clear day, Turkey beyond. French doors to the rear garden and 8m x 4m pool surrounded by several different mature fruit trees and steps down to another terrace to the side of the property with panoramic views to the sea and mountains.
The mature and verdant gardens to the rear are rich in fruit trees providing a degree of natural shade and privacy

The mature and verdant gardens to the rear are rich in fruit trees providing a degree of natural shade and privacy around the pool, but plenty of areas for true sun worshippers to develop a fanstastic tan, set against the equally stunning back drop of the mountains and village houses behind. Or if you'd prefer to lie in the sun and look at the sea, then you have the choice of either the side or front terrace.

Further details

The house is looked after by English speaking representatives and the gardens managed by 'Fathima' one of the neighbours. The swimming pool is covered in the winter months (from November to March), but for any more hardy guests, can easily be made available.

Please note that although the house is on one level, and a level walk into the village centre, there are two steps up to the property and three steps up to the pool and a small drop from the surrounding terrace down into the gardens, so care would need to be taken with small children.

The house is wonderfully situated for walking or cycling in the Kyrenian Mountain range in the Spring and Autumn. Although the water is cold in winter months, the daytime temperature is often wonderful. There is a golf course; Ten-pin bowling; Scuba-Diving and other amenities within striking distance.

Further details indoors

There is a self-contained bedsit down below the house with an additional shower room. For parties of 6, the bathroom facilities may also be used. However, the bedsit is only used by the owners when family are staying.

Further details outdoors

The house has the benefit of three different terraces/outside spaces to use at different times of the day so that the most can be made of all weathers and temperatures. There are four sunbeds and cushions with one large umbrella for use around the pool in the garden, together with a table and chairs under a pergola with access from the kitchen. However, the walnut, orange, lemon, pomegranate and apricot trees also provide a good deal of natural shade in places around the pool terraces. On the front terrace there is a wrought iron/marble table and six chairs - cushions are kept in the house. Villa Ravine's position also allows for wonderful breezes, especially to the front terrace overlooking the coast below. Adjacent to all amenities, 3 minutes walk from 'The Tree of Idleness' and at least 7 other excellent restaurants, the village bar and well stocked shop with fresh bread and anything else you might need.

Nearest supermarket, DVD shop, and hairdresser a 5 minute drive down toward the historic harbour of 'Kyrenia' the jewel of Cyprus, or for the more energetic, a 30 minute walk.

Kyrenia is just 10 minutes away by car or an hour and a half by foot downhill, but would recommend a lift back up by car!. You can also walk down the ancient footpath or lane down to Ozankoy, another village with shops and restaurants 20 minute walk down. Lefkosia (Nicosia) half an hour and Gazimagusa (Famagusta) an hour. There are some excellent new roads - one going west towards Lapta and Karsyiaka and another going East out to the Karpas.

There are several beach clubs along the coast offering well-maintained facilities.

Location description from owner

The Kyrenia District

The climate in Cyprus ranges from very hot in the height of summer to very pleasant in the winter - not unlike the south of Spain, but with many more guaranteed days of sunshine. Guests needn't worry about driving as it's on the left, a handy hangover from Colonial rule.

The Kyrenia district is the most important region of Northern Cyprus with the majority of shops, night-life and an enormous selection of restaurants around the beautiful 5th Century Harbour. There are also many other historic places of interest within striking distance such as the Mountain range castles of St. Hilarion, Buffavento and Kantara to the East.

There are also Roman ruins to die for at Salamis near Famagusta and at Solis and Vouni at the opposite end of the Island. The Karpas Peninsular, is also well worth the drive - probably the most unspoilt area of countryside bordering the sea in the whole of the Mediterranean - almost like time stood-still.

Bellapais

Bellapais, with its renown 15th century Abbey holding a commanding position on the edge of the escarpment that the village has been built on, is the most sought after district of Northern Cyprus.

It was also the home of Gerald Durrell of 'Bitter Lemons' fame in which he describes with such insight, the day to day goings on in Bellapais during the 1950s. The Abbey is floodlit and can be seen for miles from the coast down below. Partly still in tact, the Abbey is well worth a tour.

There are also important classical music festivals held there three or four times a year. Villa Ravine is 2 minutes walk from Bellapais Abbey car park.

“Wonderful villa, great host, highly recommend.”

Reviewed 29 Jul 2016

From start to finish this was a fantastic experience. We have done many private villa stays and Rodney is far and away the most helpful considerate owner that we've ever dealt with, making the whole experience simple and pleasurable from booking to travelling to staying. Airport transfers and car hire were all organised through his recommendations, which after considerable delays at the airport, meaning we arrived in the middle of the night was a huge blessing (and the driver had patiently waited for us, despite the delay). On waking we were able to discover a well appointed beautiful villa, which was a pleasure to stay in. Everything we needed was provided and there was plenty of wardrobe/cupboard/kitchen space. The views from the front terrace were beautiful - straight out to see, over the ravine. The area around the pool was perfect for us, as throughout the day there were areas shaded by the trees, and areas that were in full sun (pleasing both the shade dweller (me) and the sun worshipper (husband). Our children spent a good 90% of the say in the pool, mostly only emerging to eat and sleep. It was the cleanest and most well maintained pool that we have ever experienced and we all enjoyed maximum use of it. Bellapais is a delightful village on the outskirts of Kyrenia - a fairly large modern town. We found many restaurants and cafes right on the doorstep which we enjoyed, but would also recommend the harbour in Kyrenia for a lunch or evening meal. Contrary to expectations the roads are well maintained and the driving standard much higher than we had been lead to believe. We would recommend the beaches to the east, which were far more natural and beautiful - the ones closer to Kyrenia are generally controlled by the hotels/casinos (of which there are an abundance) and very busy - which is fine if that's your thing, but the other beaches (approx 1 hours drive) were far more peaceful and in our opinion, enjoyable. Thanks again to Rod for all his help and for sharing such a lovely home.

“Blissfully Relaxing Villa in Wonderful Cypriot Mountain Village”

Reviewed 16 Jan 2013

Having stayed in Bellapais for many years, my husband and I rate Villa Ravine the best. It's central to the village, no steep hills to climb, and yet has beautiful sea views down to the coast and Kyrenia. It's well equipped. It has a shaded terrace for me, and one in blinding heat for him, plus plentiful garden umbrellas and the natural shade of the fruit trees. Parking is not a problem. You just negotiate a rate for your stay with the chap in the Abbey car park and you can come and go at will. The normal rate is 3TL per parking. We paid 40TL for 3 weeks unlimited. Everyone in the village is friendly and helpful especially if you have a stab at the odd Turkish greeting. The neighbours are lovely, and the village shop will get you anything; if it's not on display, they will order for you. One thing the owners forgot to mention- the bed in the main bedroom is king size 6' and very comfortable. We are going back for more of the same. There's a very smart beach/bar in Catalkoy, heading east and even closer than Lara's (the one most people recommend). Lara's was closed in 2012 as they are building a hotel. But I'm contented with my Kindle on the villa terrace.
