The Lake Como region
Lombardy (Lombardia) is a wealthy and busy region, but between commerce and industry it also fits in an impressive number of prime tourist destinations.
Located in northern Italy, stretching over the Alps, plains and lakes, Lombardy's scenery is varied and sometimes dramatic. The flat area around Milan is dotted with art cities, but for a glimpse of natural splendours, head for the edge of the mountains. Here the Alps tumble down into steep valleys and lakes, in a scenic feast which has enraptured travellers for centuries.
Lombardy's regional capital is Milan; and the region's other provinces are: Lecco, Varese, Como, Bergamo, Sondrio, Brescia, Cremona, Mantova, Pavia and Lodi.
Lombardy's regional cuisine includes specialities such as risotto alla milanese, frogs (in Pavia), ossobuco alla milanese, bresaola and polenta.
Lake Como (Lago di Como) is one of the famous Italian Lakes destinations, not far from Milan in the north of Italy. Lake Como is long (50km), slender and extremely deep. The southern end forks into two long 'legs', with the picturesque town of Bellagio situated on the promontory between them.
Like the other Italian Lakes, Lake Como has been popular as a resort since the days of the Roman Empire. Visitors ever since have admired the blue waters and relaxed in luxurious villas in the wooded lakeside slopes above. Today, most of the towns around the shores of Lake Como are popular with tourists, walkers, cyclists and swimmers.
Bellagio is a small village at the tip of a long hilly promontory between the two southern branches of Lake Como. It is an elegant and long-established tourist resort, which still retains considerable charm despite the daily influx of trippers.
The historic village of Bellagio only has a population of around 200 (compared to 900 beds for tourists), and most locals live in other hamlets and villages on the headland, all grouped together under the local authority, the Comune di Bellagio.
The tiny town is an excellent place to while away an afternoon, to spend a relaxing romantic holiday or simply to base yourself for an exploration of Lake Como. With lovely views, classy boutiques, two gardens to visit, picturesque lanes, a choice of restaurants and bars, and frequent boat services, Bellagio really is one of Italy's top holiday destinations.

This apartment is located in the most stunning area we have experienced. It is simple and functional and next door to our most favourite restaurant on the planet! The Patio and garden are lake front. You can walk down the stairs and be in the cool refreshing lake in about 30 seconds. The views of the mountains and the lake itself are breathtaking and can be seen from the main bedroom and living area. This apartment is a short walk to the main Bellagio area and ferry terminal. We were traveling with a 6 and 9 year old and it was perfect The hosts are lovely people and cannot do enough to help you. We will be coming back next year. Total relaxation in a beautiful area.

"wonderful and romantic"
This is a very beautiful appartment at the most romantic spot of Bellagio: Punto Spartivento. I stayed there for 10 days with my husband and son and we had a wonderful time. The appartment is great (you can stay there with 6 people if you like!): from the livingroom and the masterbedroom you can walk into the most beautiful garden you have ever seen with a great view over lake Como. The centre of Bellagio and the little harbour for the ferry is nearby (300m!)......we liked it so much, we intend to come back every year...and let's not forget the hospitality of the familia Gregorio: very nice and the appartment is very clean!
