Description from owner

At the foot of the Mont Ventoux, down a country lane about 1.5 km to the south of BEDOIN, La Grange de Piquet, a small restored Mas (provençal for farmhouse) nestles under a hillock overlooking expansive vineyards and hills. The house comprises an attractively furnished living room with open fireplace and a piano, a dining area and a fully equipped kitchen. An easy staircase leads to a small work area on the first floor and the three bedrooms – two with double beds and one with two single beds. There are two bathrooms and two WCs There is a sunny verandah on the first floor which is very pleasant in mid-season and a ground floor terrace with grape trellis the length of the house. A converted roulotte (gipsy caravan) is negociable as an extra bedroom for a single person wholly surrounded by nature! The spacious garden ( 1 hectare) includes truffle oaks; olive; cherry; almond and mulberry trees. Plane and maple trees give plenty of shade in the summer, punctuated with cypress trees; lavender; rosemary and pots of oleander. There are two small ponds with water lilies and other plants and decorative aviaries with doves and parakeets. In spring the tone is set with a plethora of lilac, roses and banks of irises leading into the poppy season. Autumn is also a lovely time to visit when the surrounding nature turns a variety of rich colours and the walks on the Mont Ventoux are particularly agreeable. The swimming pool (9 x 4.5 m), which is set away from the house beyond the owners' wing, can generally be used from April to October according to the weather. It is discreetly shared from time to time with the owners and is fenced with a gate (European norms), but nicely planted around with shrubs and flowers.

Further details outdoors

All in all you can have a very peaceful relaxing holiday here seeing no-one, or be in the hustle and bustle of markets and bars if that’s what you like….or if you are interested in nature and birds....enjoy the variety of interesting migratory birds that join the resident population. In the garden between April and august – hoopoes, nightingales, golden orioles and bee eaters… And if you are lucky you might catch a glimpse of the “Jean le Blanc” eagles as they sometimes venture down from the Mountain.

The Provence region

A great number of interesting places to visit if the weather isn’t always up to being beside the pool - VAISON LA ROMAINE – some of the best preserved roman excavations in Europe and a fine museum, also an interesting medieval town – ORANGE - known for its opera festival in the roman theatre - AVIGNON – the palais des papes and various museums of repute, plus of course the theatre festival in July. – AIX-EN-PROVENCE – about an hour and a half drive, the brasseries where you can sit and watch the world go by , and the opera Festival if you can get a ticket! There are several possibilities for beaches, all about an hour and a half to two hours drive away; LES SAINTES MARIES DE LA MER and CASSIS for example. There are kayaking possibilities in the Sorgue river and golfing, tennis and riding and hang-gliding are all quite close. Lots of good wine tasting possibilities with numerous private wine domains in the area, the co-operative cave at BEDOIN is also very good and has a good selection of interesting bottles.

Bedoin

The shops in BEDOIN ( two supermarkets and a variety of butchers, bakers and fresh produce outlets and a good pharmacy) have most things you will need; the larger hypermarkets like LECLERC can be found in Carpentras (14 km) and AUCHAN (the largest and most important chain in France) only half an hour’s drive towards Avignon. The local market is on Monday mornings – very large in summer – and draws people from far and wide. There is another, very colourful market, in Carpentras on Friday mornings, which takes up the whole town.

“Three cheers for Veronica!”

Reviewed 26 Apr 2012

Imagine standing at the gate in Malta, waiting to board the plane with baby, baby bags, baby pushchair and baby's parents and grandparents late one evening to be told that the flight was cancelled due to the French Air traffic controllers going on strike...Imagine catching a different flight at 6.30am the next morning, to Milan and driving for 7 hours to get to Bedoin...then imagine being welcomed personally by Veronica, a lovely rose' wine at the ready, fireplace all primed for lighting and enough food and drink to see us through that night and the next morning and you will understand the meaning of 'A Wonderful Welcome!' Our days were planned around the 6 month old's schedule and still we managed to see and do lots. This being our first foray to Provence we used it as a taster for another visit in the future. The holiday rental allowed us to shop at local food stores and, although having to be back 'home' by mid evening we so enjoyed the meals we prepared with excellent fresh food from the Intermarche at Carpentras not forgetting their extensive wine aisle. Our stay had us leaving on the Monday but we still went to the market in Bedoin on that last day just to check it out. And it was lovely especially the local produce which we unfortunately could not take advantage of since we were heading back home that day. Rousillion, Gordes, St Remy, L'Isle sur Sorgue, Avignon...we enjoyed them all.
