Description from owner

Our shepherds hut offers you a romantic, relaxing atmosphere in unique surroundings and escapism from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. If you want peace and quiet but within easy reach of Dartmoor, North Devon and Cornwall then you will achieve this. It is situated only 10 minutes away from the A30 and 15 minutes from the Cornish border so a fantastic stop to split up your trip.

On arrival you will be able to make a cup of tea/coffee/hot chocolate with sugar, pint of milk on arrival.aswell as fresh bread, butter, conserves and condiments, 2 x free range eggs for an eggy breakfast.

The comfy small double bed will be freshly made before your arrival with clean towels, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and toilet roll being supplied. The kitchen is well equipped with tea towels, condiments, a microwave, two gas tops, small fridge with box freezer, sink, cafeteria and toaster. You can enjoy your meals at the breakfast bar looking out onto the open woodland with no other properties in view.

Glamping is NOT new as the shepherds and woodmen did it 100's of years ago, this hut has been constructed to a high standard by the owner, who is a carpenter and joiner. It is as near to the original design, with rolling chassis and bed with storage under for your bags not the sheep. The materials have been resourced by using 95% recycled materials just like the shepherd would have.

Enjoy the unique wood walls, the 150 year old flooring from the Hovis factory and wood for all the windows and doors are from docklands in Liverpool. This hut is giving you the experience of this but with the luxury of an en-suite providing a hot shower, working toilet and sink, no eco toilet or needing to walk to another building for these facilities!

The shepherds hut is set within the grounds of the game keepers cottage for Witherdon manor house, you will have your own privacy with your own decking area and the 450 acre woodland at your door.

Enjoy the start of the day sitting on the shepherds hut steps with a fresh coffee or tea, enjoying the rabbits and a variety of birds that will visit your personal bird feeder and see how pretty our birds are, especially, the green finches, rare siskin, bull finches, pheasant and the lesser spotted woodpecker. You may hear the rare Cuckoo in its glory. In the evenings you will listen to the owls, calls of foxes or deer rutting. You may be lucky enough to see the deer moving through the woodland and even their young, or see them in the field next to you grazing in the evenings. you will experience the visiting pheasants. In the winter months you might see visiting birds like the woodcock and snipe in our woods. You will have easy access into Witherdon wood by following your private path where it offers you a variety of routes. This is an amazing place to do star gazing due to no light pollution, you will never see a sky like it. Watching the shooting stars going across the crystal clear sky whilst in front of the fire pit with your hot chocolate or glass of wine.

Being in this area means that the phone signal may be weak and no internet. The idea is to escape so there is no tv in the shepherds hut. There is a radio with Bluetooth, books and games in your shepherds hut for you to enjoy. Or just nestle in front of the log burner in the evenings and on wet days hearing the rain but in the warmth of the hut which you will not want to leave. We will supply logs for two nights and fire lighters provided, extra wood can be bought. You will have use of a bbq, a bag of charcoal will be supplied and wood for a fire pit ready for the evenings to sit around. Parasol, deck chairs and separate seating areas around the private area, with the woodland and walks on your door step.

This area is rich with places to visit, if you can pull yourself away from the shepherds hut.

Because of the shepherds hut location means you are central and able to visit Devon and Cornwall which boasts of its beaches and fishing villages. As well as being on the door step to Dartmoor, your in reach of Exmoor which has another beautiful landscape and places to visit, Lynton and Lynmouth, Tarr steps, Clovelly, Hartland and Ilfracombe. Why not visit our local vine yards or cider producers, maybe a walk around historical houses and gardens like Rosemoor gardens, the garden house, Castle Drogo, Arlington court, kilerton house, knighthayes Court, cotehele house and gardens, Local places of interest, finch foundry, Lydford gorge, Buckfast Abbey, Canonteign waterfalls, post bridge and so much more. For the more energetic there is plenty of cycling, on or off road routes on Dartmoor or do the more relaxing ride along the Granite way, Tarka trail (bikes can be hired for both) or Burrator and Tamar lakes, these lakes are also great for walking and other outdoor activities available at Roadford lake which is 5 minutes away. you can bring your own bikes as a safe place to store your bike next to the hut is available or bring your own kayaks/canoe so you can go onto roadford lake for a small charge or rent one!

Dartmoor gate way is 20 minute drive away and worth visiting Belstone, wistmans woods, black a tor woods, widecombe on the moor, two bridges, chagford, Bellever forest. Meldon reservoir and lydford gorge are a short distance away. Exeter City and Plymouth are around 45 minute drive away and are full of history and places to visit within them. Tavistock pannier market is worth a visit to do a bit of shopping or eat locally produced food. Okehampton castle and railway to Meldon reservoir is worth a visit and experience a cake and tea on the train station! Morwellham key is a walk back in time and a good day out. Or go to Totnes visit the town shops and market then jump onto the south Devon railway that stops off at the butterfly farm and otter sanctuary. Take a train or bus to Exeter from Okehampton which offers lovely views of the Devon landscape. (only on certain days and times) Or do something new and make your visit special by a balloon flight, Dartmoor hawk falconry experience, horse riding on Dartmoor or on the beach at bude, tree surfing, rock climbing, Coasteering, surfing on Bude beach which is 20 minutes away which has many secluded beaches and amazing sea views. Or pop over the Cornish border which is 15 minutes away and visit Tintagel, Boscastle, walk/cycle along camel trail, Port Issac where Doc martin is filmed, Padstow; Polzeath; Port Isaac; Perranporth; Rock; St. Agnes; Tintagel; Wadebridge; Watergate Bay. The nearest golf courses are Okehampton, Holsworthy and Tavistock which are very popular for their positions and well maintained grounds. Fishing is popular in this area with plenty of course fishing and South west lakes for trout and course fishing. Roadford lake is 10 minutes down the road and Kennick which is very pretty 40 minutes away which is our favourite, boats can be booked. Expert advice and tips given by the owner of the shepherds hut who regularly and successfully fishes. Or sea fishing trips or beach fishing on the north devon coast which is 25 minutes away. There are plenty of Local pubs and restaurant's serving good food like the clovelly inn and the village inn, Halwill junction pub where there is a fish and chip shop which are all within 10 minute drive. The best Indian restaurant is in Okehampton. Throughout the year there are local fetes and events in local towns and villages.

Interaction with guest

I am hoping to welcome you on arrival and to settle you in with as much information that will help with your stay. There is also lots of books and leaflets about Devon and cornwall, dartmoor and the coast. There are also maps drawn by the owner to help find places and make days out smoother and quicker. The owner is within reach via coming to the house, phone or text but the owner likes to leave their guests in peace but happy to help when needed. The hut will be unlocked on arrival so if the owner is unable to welcome you then you have easy access. All the owners want is for guests to feel relaxed and enjoy their stay and hopefully return to the shepherds hut in the future.

Very Good

“The perfect little escape.”

Reviewed 31 Mar 2017

My partner and I sadly only stayed for one night on the way to visit my mum in Cornwall, two nights would have been perfect to get the full relaxed experience. But the hut is perfectly designed with everything you need to enjoy a couple of days in the country, we were lucky enough to have the best weather so far this year which enabled us to go for a lovely walk in the nearby woods, which set us up for a chilled evening around the burner . Perfect! Jen and Nick make perfect hosts with lots of local knowledge, we will definitely be going back :-)

“Lovely place in picturesque surroundings”

This place has real charm! The hut has a high standard inside and out, with lots of attention to detail and very welcoming owners. A great place to relax in peace and quiet and very cosy for winter time. Wooded walks are right outside your door with plenty of good pubs for food a short drive away. We are planning our next stay already!
