Spacious, light and beautifully furnished, Shutters is situated at the end of a small private close and is completely secluded. The private garden is beautifully kept and this home offers guests a unique combination of peaceful surroundings near to open countryside, the beautiful coastline and historical sites. The famous open-air living museum of Beamish, recreating early life in the North East is a short walk away and a great day out.
This tranquil property is perfect for relaxing after a day exploring the idyllic Beamish Conservation Valley, beautiful woodlands and cycle paths. Beamish boasts several fabulous gastro-pubs and Northumberland's sweeping sandy beaches and famous castles are within easy reach. For keen golfers, the fabulous Beamish Golf Club is a short drive away.
Fabulous holiday location, ideal for walkers, cyclists, golfers, National Trust members and those who just want to relax.
The accommodation consists of a large orangery style living room with gas 'wood burner', large windows and french doors to the private garden with seating areas. Spacious, well-equipped, open-plan contemporary kitchen/dining room with breakfast bar, granite worktops, Belfast sink and wooden and tiled floor. Light and airy conservatory with additional dining area for 6. First floor: Two double bedrooms, master with King Sized 5ft bed, dressing room and en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. There is a separate bathroom with tiled walk-in shower and toilet. Pretty secluded garden with outside eating areas. Walking distance to local gastropubs during the day (a short drive at night) which include The Black Horse, The Stables at Beamish Hall and the South Causey Inn. Shop/P.O ½ mile.
The Beamish Valley is a beautiful conservation area with a picturesque river setting, woodland walks, cycle paths and the Tanfield Steam Engine Railway. Beamish has easy access to the northeast coast and the A1, which will take you further north towards the world famous Hadrian's Wall, Alnwick (Harry Potter was filmed at Alnwick Castle), and where a fabulous day out can be spent at the Heritage Coast, exploring the many historic castles at Bamburgh, Warkworth and Lindisfarne all set amongst unspoilt golden sandy beaches - stunning! If you like shopping the Metro Centre - one of the largest shopping centres in Europe is a 15-minute drive and for cricket fans, Durham County Cricket Club is also just a short drive away. The cottage is in an ideal location for exploring all the northeastern counties, while the vibrant cities of Newcastle and Durham with its historical cathedral and river walks are a must see.

Immaculate property. Far too classy for 2 old boys up for the cricket! Good local amenities - pub (esp for breakfast), curry house and fish and chip shop. Reliable buses. Brilliant museum at Beamish. Excellent trips out to Hadrian's wall and then Durham on the way home. Highly recommended.

“Immaculate, spacious home in excellent location”
Near to Beamish Museum (which needs more than one day to do properly). Next to the 'Consett & Sunderland Railway Path' which we used for our walk into Stanley for coffee at 'The Green Pelican' and 'South Causey Inn' and two excellent meals at 'The Blue Bell'. Shutters is a well presented and meticulously maintained home that has everything you could possible want. We relaxed in the cosy lounge, read in the sunny conservatory and soaked up some sunshine in the lovely garden. Already looking forward to our next visit.
“Superb accommodation and facilities.”
Ideally located to visit many attractions in County Durham and Northumberland this cottage had everything we could wish. The personal touch by way of contact from the owners both before and during our stay was much appreciated. The spotlessly clean accommodation was warm and welcoming and it felt as if all the needs of the guest had been fully considered and catered for. One felt at home almost as soon as one walked through the door. Although the weather didn't prove to the best of friends to us during our stay it didn't prevent us from thoroughly enjoying the countryside and the coastal scenery, all within very easy access of the cottage. It would be hard to imagine anyone not enjoying a stay in this lovely cottage.
“Chillin in Beamish”
I now appreciate the accolades this property has had lavished on it. The experience was first class from the get go. The owner was attentive and flexible who allowed our group to drop its baggage off early after a long overseas flight. We were met by an intelligent capable young lady who showed us the ins and outs of the property and provided good advice on what to do where. The property was immaculate. Everybody loved the exceptionally well appointed kitchen but loved eating out in the conservatory even more as we cooked many meals using local fare mainly bought in the Durham Market (fishmongers was excellent). This relaxing property is very quiet and serene enhanced by a beautiful garden with outdoor seating . Durham is very close. Newcastle (Discovery Museum worth a visit) , Hadrian's Wall, the coast, a ton of great golf courses, good local restaurants and Pubs, and of course the nearby Beamish Museum round out more than enough entertainment for even the most discriminating traveler.
Excellent value for money. Location just right for plenty walking with Beamish Open Air Museum.only a ten minute walk away from cottage.
“Back to the blissful Beamish retreat”
This was our second week at this lovely house and we enjoyed it as much as the first time. The setting is beautiful-to look out of the window at the manicured garden and beyond that into the fields with horses is such a delight. The gas fire means that the living room becomes warm and cosy even when temperatures are frigid outside. The kitchen is a wonderful working space and with everything you need. The bedrooms are comfortable and the bathrooms luxurious. We did enjoy the Stables restaurant with private brewery which is just up the road. The communication from the owner before and after the visit was exemplary. I can highly recommend this property for a relaxing holiday in this area.
A wonderful cottage lacking for nothing. A peaceful location but close to all amenities. A perfect place to chill; comfortable sofas and an enchanting garden. The bed to die for. The finest self catering holiday we have ever taken.
There were 4 of us staying in Shutters Cottage in Beamish and we were all delighted with the cottage. It had everything we needed, plenty of space and we couldn't have had a better stay. The communication with Andrea before we went was extremely good and she answered all our questions and provided lots of information for us. We would definitely recommend this cottage to anyone visiting the area.
“Beautiful country retreat”
The house is lovely-comfortable and attractively furnished. The kitchen is huge and well equipped. It was too cold to use the conservatory, but it certainly was an inviting space. The views from the living room and main bedroom are beautiful with a well kept garden and fields beyond. The gas fire meant we could quickly warm up the living space in the evenings. The bedrooms are very comfortable and the bathrooms luxurious. Communication with the owner was timely, friendly and informative. We found everything as described on the website. We did not spend much time in the local area as we were commuting to Durham; both Durham and the Newcastle area are within easy reach by car.
“Fabulous house in a quiet but accessable location”
The Shutters is a fantastic house in a great location. The house more than matches up to the pictures and ad on the holiday guide - you will not be disappointed!The decoration, furniture, fittings and facilities are all 1st class. We stayed in November and the house was lovely and cosy - the gas wood burning stove is a great addition as it gives a direct heat to anyone sitting relaxing in the lounge without the rest of the house being stifling hot. The location is ideal for visiting Northumberland, Durham, Teesside and many parts of Yorkshire. For horse racing enthusiasts, the location is great for visiting many courses including Newcastle(30mins), Sedgefield(30 mins) and Hexham(40mins). The coast is within easy striking distance and would recommend a visit to the Victorian seaside resort of Saltburn by the Sea. A return visit is definitely on the cards.
