A pretty stonebuilt terraced cottage located on a quiet street in the heart of the charming West Dorset town of Beaminster, a short walk from its excellent food and gift shops. Beautiful walks from the door and only a short drive to the spectacular Jurassic Coast with its stunning coast walks and beaches.

Dorset Cottage is a sweet little bolthole - a perfect base for a relaxing holiday and ideal for singles, couples and for small families with a baby or young child. Nick and Jo, who look after the cottage, live around the corner with their toddler and dog, have spent the past few years exploring the area. They have put together a guide to all the wonderful things to see and do near by and are happy to advise you on activities and sites to visit during your stay.

You enter a small porch area where you can store your coats, wellies and beach bags. Next is the open plan living room and kitchen. The sitting area has a very comfortable red sofa (which folds out as a double sofa bed if required) and arm chair. There is a widescreen TV and DVD player, CD player and ipod dock. A selection of books and games are also provided, as well as maps and guidebooks.

There's a round pine table with four chairs and a well-equipped modern kitchen with gas cooker, microwave, dishwasher, a good set of pots, pans and utensils and a full set of crockery. Tea and coffee are provided.

Upstairs there is a comfortable double bedroom with ample cupboard space, armchair and TV, and a light and airy white bathroom with WC, sink, bath and shower (above the bath).

There is a quiet private garden with seating area and a lovely view of the church.

We welcome babies and toddlers and can provide a travel cot and bedding, high chair and booster seat. We may be able to provide other kit if you need. We can recommend local adult DBS/CRB-checked baby-sitters and things to do with a small person (such as the wonderful Munchkins play cafe in Dorcheser!).

One well behaved small or medium dog is also welcome downstairs for a charge of £5 per night.

The Dorset region

West Dorset is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the spectacular Jurassic Coast and miles of stunning unspoilt countryside inland to explore.

Our favourite beaches are at West Bay, Burton Bradstock and Eype (all within 15-20 minutes drive), or Lyme Regis (only half an hour away). You can walk the Coast Path for miles, climbing Golden Cap or Thorncombe Beacon for wonderful views of Chesil Beach and Portland one way, and down to Devon in the other direction. Or you can make a day trip to the superb coastline east of Portland, taking in Durdle Dor, Lulworth and Kimmeridge.

Inland, there are many interesting villages to discover, set in the distinctive and intimate countryside of West Dorset, criss-crossed by a network of ancient footpaths and national trails. A half-hour drive brings you to the equally lovely rolling chalk downland north of Dorchester.

Bridport, just six miles away, is a Georgian town at the head of the River Brit, with lots of independent shops and cafes, the smart boutique Bull Hotel, an arts centre and the quirky art deco Electric Palace. There is a fabulous street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays and you can while away many an hour browsing the antiques and bric-a-brac in the alleys and studios of St Michael's Trading Estate on any day of the week.

Places to visit include houses and gardens such as Mapperton (according to Country Life, 'the nation's finest manor house', currently being used to film Far From the Madding Crowd), Forde Abbey, Minterne, Melbury and Kingston Maurward; ancient iron-age hill forts like Eggardon and Pilsdon Pen; the Swannery, sub-tropical gardens and children's farm at Abbotsbury and the museums of Dorchester, spanning subjects from teddy bears to Tutankhamun! A short distance from Dorchester,at Higher Bockhampton, is Thomas Hardy's Cottage.

Many of the lovely surrounding villages are well furnished with fine rural pubs serving excellent food, including the New Inn at Stoke Abbott, the Fox at Corscombe, the Half Moon at Melplash, the Shave Cross Inn at Shave Cross, and, a little further afield, the Fox and Hounds at Cattistock. The River Cottage Canteen at Axminster and the Hix Oyster Bar at Lyme Regis are heaven for foodies. The original River Cottage is within walking distance if you wish to make a pilgrimage - if you're lucky you may see an otter or a kingfisher on the way!

There are regular festivals including the unique Bridport Hat Festival, the Bridport Literary and Film Festivals, the Eat Dorset Food Fair and the Lyme Regis Folk Festival.

Beaminster is a pretty, bustling market town, 6 miles inland from the coast. Its Ham stone buildings lie nestled amongst the surrounding gently rolling hills and woodland.

We love the local food shops -- Angie's fruit and veg shop, Nick Tetts the butcher, the Evershot Bakery which does the best cobber loaf we know, and Le Vieux Four patisserie for delicious coffee and pastries. And there's also a smart little Co-op open 7am-11pm, 7 days a week for papers, groceries, drinks and other essentials. There are several good cafes and restaurants, such as the luxurious and cosy Bridge House Hotel. And there are plenty of 'browsing' shops too, including two branches of Cilla and Camilla with clothes, kitchenware, gifts and toys, Pomegranate with kilims and Spanish pottery, and Ann Day with art deco jewelry and teasets!

There's a beautiful active church (St Mary's) which has the finest tower in Dorset, a fascinating museum and a brilliant playground and playing fields. Footpaths lead out into the countryside in every direction. Our favourite walk is through the fields and past the magnificent Jacobean Parnham House to the lovely village of Netherbury, and then on down the valley and through the woods to Stoke Abbott with a stop for a delicious lunch at the New Inn, and then back home via Gerrards Hill and a great view of Golden Cap, Lewesden Wood and beyond...

"Wonderful family break in sweet Beaminster"

We had a fantastic stay here with our young family (a 3 year old and a baby). The accommodation is completely toddler/baby-friendly, very beautiful and really well looked after and Jo and Nick were extremely courteous and helpful in all correspondence and in person - they recommended great local activities and family friendly places to eat which was much appreciated. It was a perfect break in a lovely location (Beaminster is a really sweet town and the countryside is gorgeous) we hope to return in the summer so we can make full use of the beaches.

Thank you very much - we're so glad you had a good stay and would love to welcome you back in future.
