Location description from manager

The Lake Maggiore region

Baveno:
Baveno is on the west shore of Lago Maggiore, 13 miles North West of Arona by rail. Although Baveno is recognised as being of ancient origin, little or no trades of its past can be found in comparison to Feriolo for example. It may be that the Lakes water level was many meters higher. Th region appears to have been originally populated with descendants of Celtic stock with an Indo-European influence, notably in the Iron age.

The Roman culture can be traced back to 1st Century BC with little or no military infuence and mainly trading. Christianity proved that Verbano became an important strategic defence position from the maurading "Germanic" hordes and subsequently the French. In the first decades of the eight century whilst then under Austrian rule, Baveno profited in a period of economic prosperity. The commericial successes of trading in wine, wood and coal with their lomabrdy neighbours brough a period of wealth.

This territory however was subsequently given to the Savoia that marked a period of economic slump. In the early '1800's Napoleon instructed the construction of the Simplon Road. Since those times, many large properties arose in this region, some of which become hotels and helped develop tourism, mainly from the English. From Byron to Lamartine, from the Czarist Alexandra to Queen Victoria of England, from Wagner to Umberto Giordano - who composed the opera Fedora in the namesake villa - and to finish Churchill who is portrayed in some Parrocchiale watercolors. Baveno is what's more famous for the red granite cave, it opens onto the foothills of Mt. Camoscio (890 meters) at the back of the town, from which also rise the mineral water springs called "Fonti di Baveno".
Baveno is also recognised as being a famous health- thermal resort. Among its monuments two important structures: the Parrocchiale of St. Gervasio and St. Protaso of the 12th-13th centuries, adapted in the 7th-8th century, with Romanesque bell and the octagonal baptistery, this too restored in the 18th-19th cent.

Lake Maggiore:
Lake Maggiore is 54 km long, with a coastline of over 150km and at its widest is 12 km. Like all the other Northern Italian lakes it is a deep glacial basin fed by rivers; Verzasca, Giona, and Cannobino flow into the lake. Its major outlet is the Ticino which, in turn, joins the river Po just south-east of Pavia.

Piedmont and Lombardy are two major regions surrounding the Lake but the most northerly section of Lake Maggiore extends a dozen kilometres into Switzerland, the lowest point above sea-level in Switzerland.

The climate as with all these protected lakes is mild in both summer and winter, producing lush vegetation, with beautifully planted gardens in wonderful villas growing rare and exotic plants. Well-known gardens include those of the Isola Madre, Isola Bella and the Isole di Brissago, that of the Villa Taranto in Verbania, and the Alpinia botanical garden above Stresa. These lakes are almost like a lost world. They also have their monsters apparently!

Baveno

Located just 7 minutes drive from Stresa, guests are also perfectly placed for soaking up a wealth of tourist-friendly delights. The famous lakeside resort town offers easy access to a wide range of attractions, including the beautiful islands of Isola Madre, Isola Bella, Isolino di San Giovanni, the botanical gardens of Villa Taranto and the saintly beauty of Santa Caterina del Sass.

Providing the perfect photo opportunity too, Stresa is also home to the popular Stresa-Mottarone cable car. Departing every 20 minutes from the Lido in Stresa, visitors can choose to travel half way up the mountain to explore the Alpine Garden, or to continue climbing up from there to its summit. Here at its peak, visitors can enjoy the adrenaline-fuelled Alpyland coaster bob ride, or simply stand in awe at the spectacular 360° views; which encompass 7 lakes and the Italian Alps.

The surrounding area of Baveno and Stresa also offer plenty of opportunities for water sports, hiking, cycling, golf, boat trips, enjoying regional food and antique markets, timeless sightseeing trips and Skiing at the Mottarone Ski Centre.

Milan Malpensa airport is conveniently just 48 minute drive away from the villa, making its location highly accommodating for global travellers and year-round stays.

Additional Sports & Adventure Activities include:
Bike Rentals, Boat Rentals/Charters, Canoeing/Kayaking, Float Plane/Helicopter, Funicular Railway, Markets, National Parks, Public Transportation, Public Villas & Gardens, Rowing Boats and Wine Tours.

Golf:
Golf Des Iles Borromées, Località Motta Rossa, 28833 Brovello Carpugnino.

The Golf Des Iles Borromées has a path that takes place in a pristine natural environment at about 500 feet high; well exposed to the sun, it is cool in summer and sunny in winter.

Set in a beautiful landscape, the field has a unique view, from the plain of the Ticino Alps Simplon and Switzerland and four pre-alpine lakes, the Maggiore, Varese, Monate and Comabbio.

The Golf Des Iles Borromées is open all year except January. Our day is closing on Mondays. From May to September included we are open daily.

Skiing ~
Mottarone Ski Resort, Stresa:
Mottarone in Italy (in the Piemonte region) is a medium sized ski resort with 7 ski lifts that offers skiers an impressive 591 metres (1939 feet) of vertical descent. Mottarone has 16 pistes.

Mottarone is best suited to beginner skiers and snowboarders but there is some terrain for intermediates but little of interest for expert skiers. Cross country ski trails can be found Mottarone.

The nearest airport is at Milan and the nearest train station to Mottarone is at Orta.
