The East Anglia region

The Barton Turf village church is nearly a mile from the village and staithe, but makes a lovely walk on a nice day. The church of St Michael and All Angels dates from the 14th century and possibly replaces a Norman structure. Extensive alterations were made during the 15th centruy, including the construction of the 87 foot tower. Further restoration work was carried out during the late 19th century, including the installation of some of the stained glass windows. The highlight of the interior of the church is the wonderful painted rood screen. It is one of the finest in the country! The church is usually open on weekdays during daylight hours. The countryside around the village is very picturesque and there are some great walks and cycle rides along the quiet country lanes. Try heading towards the tiny village of Pennygate or walk across the fields towards the church. Nearby Sea Palling is a small, quiet family seaside resort on the East Norfolk Coast. This wonderful, blue flag, sandy beach is a great place for a walk. A number of reefs have been built as part of the coast defences and it calms the waves making Sea Palling an ideal place to swim or for children to play. There are plenty of facilities for such a small resort, including a pub, cafe, shop and small amusement arcade.

Barton Turf

Barton Turf is a lovely, small, unspoilt broadland village. It has its own staithe and boatyard giving direct access to Barton Broad a National Nature Reserve. The village itself has many pretty cottages and there is a village green with pond. The village is very quiet and peaceful. The church is about a mile out of the village and well worth a walk on a fine day. The closest shop and pub The White Horse are in Neatishead, about 20 mins walk. Barton staithe, which is a peaceful place to moor your boat. All kinds of boats call in at the staithe, including wherries, yachts and cruisers, and its a great place to enjoy a picnic or a quiet evening fishing. There is only room for a handful of boats, but there is plenty of public mooring at Paddy's Lane (further up the dyke leading to Barton Turf staithe). The building on the staithe was once used to store cargo to be transported by wherry, it is now owned by the parish and used for meetings and events. Adjacent to the staithe is Cox's boatyard and marina, providing moorings and associated services for private boats. Moving up into the village centre, you will find many pretty cottages dating from different periods. One interesting row is Coronation Cottages, which were built during the Queen's coronation year of 1953. The architect decided to shape the roof-line of the row of 4 cottages into the outline of a crown. The cottages were once owned by Barton Hall, but have since been sold off. In the centre of the village is the village green, pond and village sign. The sign was made of wrought iron in 1953 and shows a Norfolk Wherry.

The Norfolk Broads is the UK's largest and finest wetland landscape. This unique patchwork of rivers and lakes is result of intensive digging of peat in the Middle Ages to provide fuel. The empty pits were soon filled by rising water levels and now form a network of over 125 miles of navigable waterways providing leisure interest for many. The Norfolk Broads landscape is one of beauty and peace, of water, marsh, woodland and wide skies - with views of church towers and windmills. There is abundant wildlife including many rare butterflies and dragonflies. Some of the nature reserves can only be visited by boat and a tour by road. Visit Broadland and you can enjoy many activities including Norfolk Broads boating holidays, sailing, canoeing, kayaking, windsurfing, walking, fishing and cycling. The RAF Air Defence Radar Museum offers a fascinating insight into the aviation history of the village and visitors will learn a great deal about the region and the workings of the RAF over the years.

“Mrs”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2016

Not what I was expecting! Our idea of holiday heaven is sitting in a private cabin chilling with a glass of fizzy bubbles whilst relaxing in the hot tub - and during the day when the water temperature drops to a safe level letting our little boy have a splash about. If you're looking for a similar break DO NOT BOOK HERE! This unit is sited in the owners garden in their full view (open the bathroom window - which has no privacy curtain or blind whatsoever and you have full view of their home!) - or in vision of the neighbours! I had no idea before booking that hot tub use was limited to two strict 20 minute sessions per day - from experience it takes longer to get ready - I was only advised this when the owner thought it appropriate to tell us this whilst we were in the hot tub on a lovely sunny afternoon - so we were clearly being watched so we felt very intruded, embarrassed and our privacy was well and truly eradicated so we went inside and as we felt we were being monitored constantly we chose not to enter again for the whole holiday. Other rules include no alcohol consumption, no use after 10pm and no under 16s in the hot tub which is a first in our 15 years of hot tub holidays!! Another odd point was guests had to park in the furthest point from the holiday let which was right in front of the owners front room so your comings and goings could be logged - or so after the hot tub incident it seemed! It's such a shame as the owner had spent lots of time and money on a hot tub area including lovely lighting which cannot be enjoyed - without doubt our most disappointing holiday ever :( and one we would have cut VERY short had circumstances allowed.

Owner's reply: Dear Mrs R Jackson We were very surprised to read on trip advisor of your experience at Sailaway as you said nothing of your complaint whilst staying at Sailaway or at your departure. We have recently invested in a new top of the range hot tub which was installed along with new decking and lighting a couple of weeks prior to your stay. This model of hot tub is totally different to the previous one. On installation we were supplied and trained on the use, maintenance and health safety. This particular model is nothing like they were 15 years ago, the jets are much more powerful and give a massage as well as heating the water at a higher temperature. We take great care to ensure our guests have a delightful, relaxing and safe stay with us, and , take pride in providing 99.9% of our guests with a memorable stay as you can see from our previous reviews. As for the parking we have an allocated space for our guests in front of our office - at the front of the house. Terence & Annette.

“Fantastic facility, modern and cosy. Hot tub is amazing.”

Sailaway is in a fantastic location and is very well presented. the owner was extremely friendly and helpful and the welcome basket is a lovely touch. The mod-cons make it a lot of fun as well as being relaxing. It was very clean and everything we needed was there. The hot tub is also amazing. Very clean and well maintained. Will definitely be visiting again.

“Perfect short break”

Thanks to Terrance and Annette Terrance got in touch within couple of hours of booking and confirmed our arrival time They were welcoming and went through with us everything about the cottage and surrounding area. Cottage was very well presented, clean, had all essentials Huge television with excellent sound system was a bonus. Hot tub after a long walk along the broads was very relaxing. Although not too far from Wroxham, still tucked away - cannot fault anything. We would go back again and would rate it as excellent.
