Description from owner
This is a beautifully restored coach house. The original stone floor is evident and heated throughout the downstairs via geothermal heating. It is a spacious house and very suitable for large groups. Beautiful views over the Peak District.
There is a large wooden beamed lounge that has been host to many birthday parties over the past 7 years, as well as hen do's, stag do's, retirements, reunions and even a small wedding.
This house is steeped in history and is a real landmark in Holmesfield. The kitchen is modern and inviting, the games room includes a pool table and also a table football. There is one small step into the house, and 2 steps into the living-room.
The location is perfect for walking to local pubs, walks on the moors or cycling to key locations such as Hathersage, Chatsworth, Bakewell or many other Peak District villages.
This is an old house, so has got some uneven floors which may not be suitable for those with restricted mobility.
The Derbyshire region
The Old Robin Hood, is located within easy reach of Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall and various other historic halls.
There are many easy walks to Baslow, Hathersage, Grindleford - with a few good eating stops on the way, Grindleford Station Cafe, Fox House, Grouse Inn, The Royal Oak and several in Hathersage too.
On Mondays there is the famous Bakewell market - where you can buy fresh veg, meat and other country fayre items.
There are lots of activities for children in Sheffield - if the weather isn't great for walking - Magna, Sheffield Millenium Galleries, the Peace Gardens to name but a few.
Chatsworth Estate hold many events during the summer - it is worth looking at their website. Longshaw Estate is part of the National Trust and is a nice walk from the house, Padley Gorge is a nice 8 mile walk across the moors and down along the river.
The Peak District National park has plenty for everyone. You can even do unusual sports such as paragliding in Castleton
Holmesfield: Holmesfield Holmesfield is a Parish based around two centres of population; the village of Holmesfield itself, and the hamlet of Millthorpe. It is made up of a number of farming hamlets situated above the Cordwell Valley.
The village is very pleasantly situated in a highly respectable neighbourhood and contains several very genteel habitations. The Parish extends beyond Owler Bar to the West and towards Dronfield to the East.
The centre of the parish is marked by St Swithins parish church, which was built in 1826, which can be seen from almost all of the surrounding areas. Amongst the local amenities are eight pubs, (including The Angel Inn, Horns Inn, Travellers Rest Inn and the George & Dragon) and a number of restaurants; both a football and cricket pitch, a village hall (that can be booked by members of the public) and a host of groups and societies to accommodate many an interest, and the parish’s most recent addition, the Vicarage was added in 1999.
Areas of Interest within walking distance: Fanshawe Gate Hall in Holmesfield is one of the most popular private gardens in north Derbyshire. It combines traditional cottage garden planting with magnificent topiary and water features. Holmesfield’s important buildings are Holmesfield Hall, dated 1613, with additions built in the 18th century, and Woodthorpe Hall, a large 17th century, gabled manor house, dated 1636.
Peak District: The property overlooks the Peak National Park - where there is an abundance of things to do. Every activity you can imagine is available in some shape or form. Over 22 million people visit the Peak District every year and when you get here ..you'll know why. If you are a keen walker - a guide can be arranged a very reasonable fee to arrange day walks taking in some of the finest views in Europe! Just let the owners know in advance.
If you are interested in off road mountain biking then there are plenty of tracks. Hathersage village (7 miles away) has a great heated outdoor pool that is open from April - end September and is definitely worth a visit. Chatsworth House is 6 miles away and is a must visit!
Other Activities: Close to Chatsworth House, Hathersage, Bakewell, Haddon Hall and many other historical points of interest

“Great weekend away for 14”
14 of us stayed at the cottage for the bank holiday weekend and had an absolutely amazing time! We were attending a wedding in Baslow about 10 minutes down the road on Saturday and Sunday so most of our time was spent there, however in the time we did spend at the cottage we made full use of all the facilities- Stunning view from the garden (pictures attached) and had great fun in the hot tub. The big dining table was perfect for all getting together and having a meal - and also for a good game of beer pong!! Pool table, table football, and board games were all also made use of. Thanks for having us Aoife - we would definitely love to return!
Glad you had a great time. Hope to see you all again soon.
“Loved the garden”
We stayed here as a group of friends on a weekend walking trip. The house was as described, and ticked all the boxes for us. We especially enjoyed the garden and hot tub and games tables. The large lounge and kitchen was perfect for a large group, and was well equipped. We had no complaints other than slow running drains, which the owner promised to look at after our departure, as it wasn't possible in the time we were there. Other than that it was great! The owner was easily contactable and although away, checked in with us by phone shortly after our arrival to check if there was any problems that she could arrange to be sorted.
“Absolutely beautiful, breath-taking views, cant wait to return!”
11 of us stayed at the robin hood from the 16th – 18th May for my hen party and absolutely loved it. The house is beautiful and the views from the garden are incredible. I miss sitting at the dining table looking out over the countryside, really didn’t want to come home. We had everything we needed for the weekend and the kitchen was more than ample to cook in. The house is located a 10minute drive from burbage where we went walking on the Saturday and had lunch at the fox house pub which was delicious. Another 15minute down the road is castleton which is a lovely little town which we also visited. We went into Sheffield for one evening which is around a 20minute drive away, cost £16 in a taxi for 6 people. We played table football, pool, table tennis and went in the hot tub on the Friday night which was perfect for a girly night in. Cannot think of anything to complain about at all, phone signal was pretty poor which you expect in the countryside but you could always get on the wifi in the kitchen and in some of the bedrooms. Wifi wasn’t great in the lounge but this wasn’t really an issue as we could just go into the kitchen if needed. The house was perfect for my hen do as it is located in the beautiful countryside however many towns aren’t too far away to drive to so we had the best of both worlds. Please don’t contemplate booking this place out for your holiday, you will not regret it. I hope to return again next year
Thank you for this lovely review and for sharing your recommendations for walks etc with others it is great for those who follow. The 400 year old walls do make the wifi challenging in some rooms sometimes but as you say the kitchen is best locaition! We look forward to welcoming you again..perhaps next time as Mr & Mrs. Best of luck for your big day.
“Great family gathering house”
Stayed here for a family birthday, chose this because it has 5 double bedrooms with one of these and a bathroom on the ground floor for an older relative. Location is great, with lovely views, walking distance to several pubs and restaurants, really close to gorgeous countryside, or rugged moors for walking, pretty market towns to explore like Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock. House is about right for 10 people and a few kids - good sized lounge with log burner and high beamed ceiling, large dining area with views over the valley, attractive and well equipped kitchen, 5 good sized bedrooms with comfy beds and 3 bathrooms. The pool table and table football were great, as would have been the hot tub in the courtyard, but it was unseasonably cold so we weren't able to use it. Nice extras like two fridges, lots of family games, a supply of logs and kindling, plastic cups and plates for outdoor eating etc. The temperature dropped suddenly when we arrived so we weren't warm enough in the lounge (as its such a big room) on the first day or two but the owner was fantastic about sorting this out and giving us some fab electric heaters until the central heating had caught up, it was really cosy after that. The house was really clean and tidy but there were some maintenance issues with things that needed painting, fixing or replacing but they weren't major and perhaps it was a sign of it being the end of the summer season. Would be great to stay here in the depths of winter providing you had plenty of supplies in, as well as in summer when the outdoor spaces and hot tub would be fantastic fun.
Just a quick update on this review; The house has been completely re painted since this review, a job that we do annually as well as constantly touching up during the year.
“Hen do - Amazing”
The house is amazing! We went there on a hen do and the house was great. Perfect location. Large kitchen with everyhing you need. Cosy bedrooms. Large bathrooms. Hot tub = perfect! Could not want for anything else!!!!
“spacious and well equipt.”
A awsome time from start to finish, thirteen members of our family and two dogs, shared a lovely break in the old robin hood. With plenty of room to sit and relax, comfortable beds and three bathrooms no one felt on top of each other, the children especially enjoyed the table football and space in the garden, we all enjoyed the hot tub and lovely view. The kitchen provided all the equipment we could possibly need on our stay, and everyone could fit around the large dining table easily. With lots of interesting places to visit within a short car journey and some lovely long or short walks nearby we never had a dull moment, we can't wait to visit again!
“Perfect property for a relaxing, fun hen do with my friends and family”
I booked the Old Robin Hood after looking around the internet for quite a long time in search of the perfect venue for my hen weekend. I wanted a nice relaxing weekend where I could spend time with my friends and family in great surroundings. The Old Robin Hood was everything I had hoped for. The building is gorgeous and very well equipped. We catered for ourselves the whole weekend and there was everything w could need. Aoife the owner left us loads of towels to use and all the beds were lovely and comfy with nice fresh white bed linen. The hot tub at the back of the house was great and really nice and warm despite the amazingly strong winds! The house is at the top of a hill and I think it must get the wind a lot of the time, this didn't spoil our enjoyment of the garden or the hot tub and BBQ. There is a table large enough for 16 people which was great for us to have our murder mystery party around and a TV and DVD player for when we were chilling out on the last night. I would really recommend this as a venue for a celebration or a large group or family holiday. The surrounding area is gorgeous and has so many things to do. Aoife and her family were lovely and friendly and ensured we had everything we needed.
Thank you so much for your lovely review. Hope to see you all again.
“An Excellent way to spend our 30th's”
What can I say.... AMAZING!!!! This property was absolutely perfect for celebrating several 30th birthdays in one. Great size for us all (11) and was fully equipped with everything we could want, plenty of glasses, crockery and cutlery as well as places to relax (lounge), dine and bask in the sunshine around the hot tub. Aoife was really helpful in the run up to the weekend, allowing us to have a look around before, and then when we were there, checking we were OK, but certainly not in our faces. We hired a karaoke machine for our 80's themed Saturday night party, to which there was plenty of space, even using the dining area as our stage. All this was topped off with the hot tub, clean and replenished with hot water when needed, was the cherry on top, and we all spent lazy days and relaxing evenings in there. Thank you Aoife and the Robin Hood from Kelly and all the girls (Chesterfield) xxxxx
We are so glad you had a great time, thanks for taking the time to review the property and your kind words! Hope to see you again, for next birthday!
“Comfortable, clean and relaxing- especially liked the log fire and hot tub”
Great house for a large group, everything we needed was there and the owners were very accommodating thank you. The hot tub was a great bonus especially as we had terrible weather!
“Fabulous property in a lovely location!”
Thanks Aoife for providing us with a great stay at Old Robin Hood The house is stunning and perfect for a large group with plenty of space and facilities. 16 of us enjoyed my sister's hen party and made use of the lovely hot tub, bbq and we even held an 80s dance class in the enormous lounge! The location was perfect with stunning views, close proximity to Dore train station and within walking distance of the lovely Angel pub in the village who catered for us on the Saturday evening. I can highly recommend the food and service there. All in all a great weekend away in a great property and l hope to return with my family soon.
