The Tuscany region

The village of Sommocolonia is very old. Indeed it was founded by the Romans and was, for strategic reasons, a very wise choice as the views are just spectacular.

Sommocolonia offers the sort of tranquility and peace that is hard to find these days. You can listen to the birds singing as you relax in the warm sunshine and it's easy to forget the hustle and bustle of every day life.

You can walk the old Roman road down to Barga with its restaurants, shops, banks and other facilities it is just a few minutes drive away down the regular road.

Barga is a medieval Tuscan town situated 35km north of the city of Lucca, the Provincial capital. It was founded by the Lombards, and evolved as a castle enclosed by walls, of which two gates (Porta Reale and Porta Macchiaia) have survived. It has been described as one of the prettiest towns in Italy.

The town was well known during the Middle Ages for the manufacture of silk threads which were exported to major centres such as Florence, its mills hydraulically powered by the nearby rivers.

Today, the old part of Barga (Barga Vecchia) hosts many cultural events and is home to various shops, restaurants and gelaterie.

The Duomo (cathedral) (11th-16th centuries) is on the summit of the hill of Barga Vecchia and has panoramic views of the surrounding area.

In Barga Giardino which is outside the walls of Barga Vecchia, you find banks, shops, the supermarket, bars and the lively centre of the town.

Barga

Sommocolonia is very close to the Garfagnana area.

The Garfagnana is an historical region of Italy, which today forms part of the province of Lucca.

It is located between the Apuan Alps, which is famous for the production of marble, and the Apennines.

The Garfagnana is a dramatic and beautiful part of Tuscany with spectacular scenery which is different to the Tuscan region further south which is much flatter.

The native trees of the Garfagnana are mainly deciduous. The most common is the Chestnut which was once an important food source for the local people. In November time, there a many local festivals where you are served up local treats made with chestnuts.

The Garfagnana region is also famous for the production of farro (spelt) a primitive wheat which is low in gluten and is very versatile for both winter and summer dishes and also for porcini mushrooms which are found in the area around June time and then again in September.
