Description from owner

The cottage is full of original features, including wooden beams and the original fire place in the sitting room. A beautiful polished oak staircase and wooden floor boards are found on the first and second floors. It is rustic and simple. A typical, traditional french town house.

The house sleeps up to 5 in two large bedrooms. The bedroom on the first floor has a double bed and a single bed and there is a king size bed in the second floor bedroom. The bathroom is found on the first floor and has a power shower. The Sitting room is bright and sunny, and is also very cosy in the evenings with a log burning stove and a television on which to watch DVD's. At the back of the property is a secluded, south facing garden, which has a table and chairs for al fresco dining.. A perfect spot to relax with a glass of wine on those warm summer evenings.

The Basse-Normandie region

Our cottage is located in the Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine. It is situated in the thriving village of Barenton, between Mortain and Domfront in the region of Manche, Normandy.

Barenton

The village has a supermarket, epicerie, boulangerie and a cafe and restaurant. The local area is vibrant, with countless rural activities and historical sites to visit. All of this and just one hour 30 minutes drive from the port of Caen and two hours from Cherbourg.

We have included a list of some of our favourite sites and places to visit when staying at the cottage on our 'Things To Do' page on our website: www.holidaycottagenormandy.org

There are countless places to explore and sites to visit in and around Bareton. Here are some of our favourites

Cycle Route: Domfront to Mortain

Passing through Barenton (Le Bocage Normand)

From the historic town of Domfront perched on its rock, this section of La Véloscénie to the Mont St-Michel follows a greenway along a disused railway line going through the typical quiet countryside of the Bocage Normand. This area is reputed for its apple and pear orchards and its gastronomy. You'll pass the pretty villages of Mortain and Ducey. From Domfront, an alternative route along another greenway takes you to Flers via the charming Varenne Valley.

Normandy D-Day Beaches

Distance from the house: 105km (65 miles)

The D-Day beaches are the historic site of Operation Overlord, the Allied invasion of western Europe during World War II.

Mont Saint Michel

Distance from the house: 58km (36miles)

One of the landmark sites of France, Le Mont Saint-Michel is a day trip from the house.

Chemins de la baie

We highly reccomend doing the Ancient Pilgrim walk across the sands to the Mont.

Museum of the Bayeux Tapestry

Distance from the house: 95km (59 miles)

This museum houses the famous Bayeux Tapestry, a 70-m long piece of embroidery that graphically tells the story of the 1066 Battle of Hastings

Bagnoles De L'orne

Spa and TownDistance from the house: 35km (21 miles)

Visitors will discover a town with a relaxing atmosphere provided by its Belle-Epoque Architecture, its lake, weeping willows, fine bridges and race course. From the thermal springs with their water at 26°C (79°F) to the winding paths of the Andaine forest, the local attractions offer conviviality, well-being and recreation. Today this attractive town of fine sandstone buildings, adorned with roses and hydrangeas, is giving up its secrets, from the Arthurian legends surrounding the area to the discovery of the Spring, and of the Roc au Chien in the forest outside the town

Domfront

Distance from the house: 15km (9 miles)

Perched on a hill above the Varenne valley is the fortified medieval town of Domfront, founded in the 11th Century. It has preserved many reminders of its rich past, with charming squares and narrow streets, a 12th Century Romanesque keep, remains of the old feudal castle, rampart towers, and picturesque half timber houses.

Mortain and Local Second World War Sites

Distance from the house: 10km (6 miles)

In August 1944, Mortain was the site of an important battle between the German and American forces. Over a period of six nights the 30th Infantry Division fought valiantly (with one radio with dying batteries) against the German Panzer counter-attack of Operation Lüttich, to preserve the breakout established in Operation Cobra. Also worth a visit is 'Le Grande Cascade'

La Ferté-Macé Recreation Centre

Distance from the house: 37km (22 miles)

6 km from Bagnoles de l'Orne there is a lake of 28 ha (lifeguard during July-August). Here there is sailing, windsurfing, optimist boats, fishing, electric boats, pedal boats, kayaking, horse riding, climbing, mini-golf, go-karting. There is a walk all the way around the lake. There is also a picnic area and restaurant.
