Location description from owner
The Poitou-Charentes region
- Ideally situated, tucked away but near to river and lake beaches, excellent restaurants, bars and the coast is within easy reach
- The towns and villages of the South Charente may look sleepy but we can point you to evening markets, delicious restaurants, concerts, enchanting walks and memorable visits.
- One of the most beautiful villages in France, Aubeterre-sur-Dronne is a short car ride away. Visit the village for its monolithic church, have lunch in the square and then sunbathe on the beach by the river Dronne.
- Or visit Chateauneuf and take a boat ride on the river Charente, where the local council often sponsors open- air live concerts on Summer evenings.
- Go to the wonderful music festival of Cognac with bars, live music and dinner at the quayside.
- You can pretty much find a market every day in the area. Monday is Aubeterre and Chalais, Wednesday is Montmoreau, Friday it is Riberac ( a must for first time visitors, sprawling, busy but rather English), Saturday is either the little local market in Blanzac or St Aulaye. Or you could visit the great houses of the Medoc, St Emilion, Castillon and Cognac.
- From May through to the Summer almost every village has its own local market, night market of local produce, or brocante.
- Roadside signs advertise Pineau des Charentes, a sweet blend of grape juice and cognac, best drunk on a warm evening as an aperitif with friends. The locals also like it with oysters and moules and love cooking with it!
- Why not try your chicken or fish with pineau rosé, shallots, garlic with tomatoes, thyme and bay leaves from the garden ...... easy and delicious.
- Le Temple is ideally located in the heart of this heady mix of tranquility and culture.
Le Temple is ideally located in the South Charente in the heart of France's wine and cognac producing area. It is close to the small market town of Blanzac (2 to 3 minutes by car) with shops, supermarket, bank, health centre, chemist, running track and tennis.
There are beautiful walks and sleepy, historic villages to visit. Nearby is Brossac fresh water lake with sandy beach, jet-skiing and a restaurant that overlooks the lake.
There are several local restaurants, serving regional produce and Barbezieux has a market, chic shops, relaxed restaurants and bars.
Chateauneuf often has a Summer live music concert on the riverside and historic Angouleme, our 'main' town is known as the balcony of the Charente. It has restaurants spilling out into cobbled streets, night life, stunning architecture, very chic shopping areas, museums and river cruises on the beautiful Charente.
At the coast, Talmont and Meschers, pretty and historic fishing villages are a pleasant 50 minutes drive or nearer in Jonzac there is an indoor tropical pool complex.
Cognac is a beautiful town, with lots of interesting visits and is a great centre of music, with its renowned Cognac Festival in the Summer.

“Everything we needed to make our week so relaxing and enjoyable”
We stayed for a week at Le Four at Le Temple in July 2013. Our journey had a bit of a wobbly start with our hire car but as soon as we arrived at Le Four and were welcomed so warmly by Jean and Mike that wobble was soon forgotten! They had also left the best ever 'welcome pack' that we have received in our many years of visiting France and offered to phone the local Duck restaurant to see if they could fit us in. The house and pool were fantastic and everything was spotless. Poor Jean was kept busy clearing up the pool on a couple of occasions following pretty heavy thunderstorms but she did it before we even noticed what mess had been left! We would certainly recommend the house to anyone who is looking to visit this area of France as we were very well looked after and as I say, everything was spotlessly clean and well maintained Thank you Jean and Mike for making our stay so good.
Thank you so much for your lovely feedback. it is true that we certainly had at least one fairly dramatic storm whist you were with us, still it made a good story when Mike got back, didn't it! I have said before that i believe cleanliness and a welcome are so important, especially at the end of a journey and thank you for noticing that. We do hope to see you again at Le Temple. Jean.
We regrettably only stayed for one week here, it came to an end all too soon. The house is fabulous and the owners Jean and Mike were fantastic and very helpful. The pool and gardens are a joy to be in, we found it difficult to tear ourselves away to explore the area. The house was immaculate and very welcoming.
Thank you so much. We were sorry to see you go and do hope you will visit us and the area again. Thank you for mentioning the cleanliness, this is something very important to us and we are pleased you and the children enjoyed the house and gardens as much as we have always done.
“Beautiful, spacious house with everything you could need for a perfect holiday.”
We have just got back from a 2 week stay with our 6 month old daughter and and my parents and can't wait to go back. As soon as we arrived we were made to feel so welcome by the owners, Mike and Jean, who were an invaluable source of knowledge on the local area and gave us loads of great ideas on places to visit that were just a short drive away, including markets, lakes, shopping, beaches, old churches etc. The house itself is extremely spacious with lovely views across the countryside. The pictures just don't do it justice. It is equipped with everything you could need and want. Just down the road in Blanzac there are a couple of shops, a boulangerie and a couple of restaurants, just don't get caught out like we did as nothing is open on a Sunday afternoon. Luckily Jean was on hand with some pork fillets from her freezer, a bag of potatoes and lettuce from their veg plot which she insisted we have. This has been probably the best holiday we've had and we would definitely recommend it for a great place to stay and explore some beautiful parts of France.
Thank you for such a lovely review. We were so pleased you enjoyed your holiday at Le Four and do look forward to seeing you all again. It is not easy to show the house and gardens adequately in the advert and our guests have always been very pleasantly surprised on arrival. We do like to be around to help and you are always most welcome to call round for advice, an aperitif or simply to have some salads, tomatoes or herbs from the garden.
We stayed at this property in July this year. The house is absolutely beautiful set in peaceful surroundings. My children were able to play safely and the property owners who live close by could not do enough to ensure that our holiday was nothing short of perfect. We had an amazing holdiay spending time sunbathing around the house, playing in the pool and exploring the nearby area. I would highly recommend this property, we have already booked to return next year
Thank you so much for your review. It was lovely to welcome you again this Summer, 2012. We were happy to see that the children felt at home in the pool and gardens, playing with the games and we do look forward to seeing you yet again next year, when we will hopefully visit another night market with you!
