Location description from owner

The Blagoevgrad Province region

Bansko is situated in the south west of Bulgaria, about 160km from the capital, Sofia.

The town of Bansko is situated at the foothills of the beautiful Pirin mountain range, and surrounded by the Rila and Rhodope mountains, making it an idyllic scenic mountain setting. Parts of the Pirin mountain range and are a national park and world heritage site..

The mountains are ideally suited for skiing in the winter and mountain trekking in the summer with three peaks towering over 2900m.

In the local vicinity, as well as skiing and trekking, it is also possible to fish, mountain bike, rock climb, pony trek and walk in beautiful alpine meadows.

Bansko

Mountain Dream Complex is one of the best equipped resorts in Bansko and claims the best indoor pool in town. As well as it's excellent location on the southern end of the town and within the Pirin National Park, it has great on-site facilities to make your stay more relaxing and enjoyable.

More information about the Mountain Dream complex can be found on the website www.mountaindreambg.com.

The old town centre is steeped in history and has a truly established feel, with old classic town buildings and churches amidst cobbled streets.

Many traditional Bulgarian restaurants and bars/tavernas called "Mehana" can be found here. They combine lovely tasty Bulgarian dishes and local wine/beer with lively non-stop entertainment, including folk music, discos and all-night clubs.

There is a new floodlit outdoor ice rink opened in 2008, which if you haven't had enough exercise on the slopes, provide more opportunity to burn those calories!

History and Culture
There are well over 100 important cultural monuments still remaining in Bansko and it's nearby vicinity attracting tourists from far and wide.

The archeological traces of the inhabitants of Bansko and the Razlog Valley in general date to the early periods of the Roman Empire. There are several housing structures at the outskirts of the town, which date to 100 BC.

Until 5 October 1912, Baniçka (Bansko's former name) was a part of the Ottoman Empire, but enjoyed a quasi self-rule autonomy granted by the sultan. The town was ruled by an assembly of the elders, while justice was administered by the Ottoman judge in Razlog. It was incorporated in Bulgaria in 1912 as a result of the First Balkan War.

Bansko today
Bansko, once mainly a stockbreeding and travelling merchant community, has nowadays become a centre of winter and summer tourism. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for recreation. In recent years, the town has gained international popularity after the start of the annual Bansko Jazz Festival and consequently the annual Bansko pop-star concert featuring top pop stars. The nearby village of Banya, located only 5 km from the town, is known for its 27 thermal mineral springs.

“Excellent Apartment - stunning views !”

Reviewed 4 Mar 2012

Although the apartment is a 10 minute walk into the town and down to the Gondola we did not find this a real issue as taxis are easy to find - although the amount we were charged differed greatly from 5 lev up to 20 lev ! We would have liked an information pack in the apartment recommending local restaurants and also trips or activities that were available. We wanted to go on a ski mobile trip and had to scour the internet to find the details. We enjoyed our stay and found the apartment fully equipped. for our needs.
