The Blagoevgrad Province region
Bansko is a beautiful old town at the foot of Bulgaria's spectacular Pirin Mountains, close to the borders with Greece and Macedonia. At 925m above sea level, Bansko enjoys a mild alpine climate with wonderfully clean air and fabulous scenery. The archeological traces of the inhabitants of Bansko and the Razlog Valley in general date to the early periods of the Roman Empire. Once mainly a stockbreeding and traveling merchant community, Bansko has become an international centre for winter and summer tourism. The mountain peaks near the town, the numerous lakes and the old pine woods make it a popular site for recreation and Mountain Biking is fast becoming the most popular way to explore the region and for many the primary reason for their visit outside of the skis season.
The snows may have gone, but summer in Bansko offers a wealth of activities. The air is clear, the slopes are green and the mountains and villages are yours to explore. This is the season for mountain bike action. www.ridebansko.com
Named after Perun, the highest god of the Slavic pantheon and the god of thunder and lightning, the Pirin Mountains with Vihren (2,914 m high) the highest peak, extends about 40 km northwest-southeast, and about 25 km wide. Most of the range is protected lying within the Pirin National Park, designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983.
Pirin is known with its abundance of water. Many rivers take their sources from the mountains. The rivers are short and turbulent forming many leaps and rapids. One of the most picturesque parts of Pirin's landscape are the176 crystal-clear mountain lakes which are called the eyes of the mountain in the Bulgarian folklore. All have glacial origin and are usually situated at the bottom of spectacular cirques surrounded by rugged marble slopes and snow-capped peaks.
Pirin has rich and varied flora and fauna. More than 1,300 plant species have been identified, zoned into three elevation lines: tree, subalpine and alpine. The tree line reaches an altitude of 2,000 m and is covered predominantly with coniferous species. Lower woodland is also home to broadleaf trees such as Beech. Up to 2,500 m is the subalpine line, dominated by Mountain Pine and Juniper whose size decrease as the altitude rises. The alpine line is situated above 2,500 m, covered with grass, moss, lichen and abundant in Bilberry. (Wild Blueberry). In Spring and early summer Crocuses and Edelweiss carpet the upper slopes but quickly trails fall below the tree line providing mile upon mile of rock strewn woodland single track.
