The Prachuap Khiri Khan Province region

Huai Yang lies in the district Thap Sakae that also is the name of one of the nearest villages. The district has eleven small villages of which Huai Yang and Thap Sakae was two of the first. The province is called Prachuap Khiri Khan and consists of eight similar districts. Prachuap Khiri Khan is also the name of the province capital, that furthermore is the closest city and is situated about 15 miles north of Huai Yang.

The area around Huai Yang is very beautiful and has two national parks. One a few miles up in the mountains and one marine reserve a couple of miles to the north. The nearest area around the village is a mixture of forest, agriculture and coconut and pineapple plantations. The neighbouring village of Thap Sakae, that's given the district it's name, is also a fishing village and is known for its fine coconuts and fruit plantations.

The province capital of Prachuap Khiri Khan is about 15 miles north of Ban Huai Yang and have approx 15000 residents. The city is old but was abandoned 1767 when the kingdom of Ayutthaya fell, and was rebuilt in 1845. The centre is fairly small and there are few tourists. There are a lot of shops and restaurants including more than twenty clothing shops and a gigantic lamp shop, they also have a golf course along the fantastic lagoon outside Manao Beach. Here is also a big market and a tourist office that readily helps and there are also guided tours in and around the city. In the midst of the centre lies the beautiful Temple Mountain, also nicked Monkey Mountain since there are wild monkeys living there. In the evenings they come down to drink and bath in the fountain.

Hua Hin is the oldest tourist resort in Thailand. Here's many tourists, both foreign and rich Thais. Here you find several golf courses, bars, sport activities, guided tours, luxury hotels and all other things to expect from a modern tourist city. Because of the tourism the prices here is somewhat higher than in other places in the area. It's a bit more laid back here than in most tourist cities and the nightlife is not quite as wild.

Even if there are many restaurants where you can have a cold beer or a drink in the evening there is no real nightlife in Huai Yang except from a few festivities and beach parties. If you want to go to a real pub or go for a spin on the dance floor you have to go to Hua Hin were there are plenty of pubs and a few nightclubs.

Golf courses you find many in Hua Hin but Prachuap Khiri Khan have the nearest that lies beautifully along the coast. You can easily get there yourself or you can take a guided golf tour from Jack's Resort were everything is included, greenfee, equipment and dinner for approx 700 bath (approx 15 euros!).

In Hua Hin you can rent a pony and ride along the beach, there you can also do most aquatic or land based sports, and other activities, you want.

Huai Yang

Ban Huai Yang is a cosy little fishing village where you always meet happy and smiling Thais in a quiet and rural environment, 200 miles south of Bangkok and 250 miles north of Phuket. The fishing in the village starts after sunset, between six and seven, when the sea is filled by the light from the lanterns of the fishing boats. The village has no hotel and is genuine and relatively unexploited, apart from the small tourist villages that's scattered around the area. The never ending beach is free from hordes of tourists and apart from an occasional tourist outside one of the few resorts and the children that usually come down after school and dive from the pier, you can have the beach almost entirely for yourself.

In the village centre there are many shops and restaurants. There is also a pharmacy, post-office, travel agent, railway station, bus station, Internet café, laundry, several markets and much more. The village also has two Buddhist temples.

Huai Yang is a paradise for sun and bath. Orchid Village has its own beach and there is a footpath the entire way there. It's shallow and the sand and bottom is soft and nice. The water is crystal clear, warm and nice the year around, and among the finest swimming waters in all of Thailand. In connection to the beach is a beach restaurant. If you want to jump and dive you can go some hundred yards to the north to the pier that lies outside Jack's Resort.

If you want to dive for real or snorkel there's a tremendous underwater world to explore. Equipment and boat can be rented in the village or in the marine reserve of Wannakorn beach two miles north of Huai Yang. Guided diving tours to different islands and reefs depart from many places along the coast. Among others to Similan Iceland that is regarded as one of the worlds three greatest diving waters. Immediately south of Prachuap Khiri Khan there is a very nice aquarium, Waghor Aquarium, for those of you that want to see the underwater world without having to dive.

Up in the mountains that stretches 1500 yards above sea level lies Namtok Huai Yang national park that's regarded as one of Thailand 's most beautiful. Here there are rainforest and fantastic waterfalls. Animals you can get to see include elephants, leopards, langur, gibbon and wild boar. The Park is very well-managed with restaurants, toilets and resting places.

Apart from the beach restaurant and Jack's Resort there are several restaurants in connection to Orchid Village. And downtown is even more. It is amazingly cheap. An entirely decent meal can cost up to 1 euro and a more luxurious one about 3. A restaurant I can highly recommend is Kob seafood restaurant that lays a couple of hundred yards inwards country from Jack's Resort. The staff is very nice and the food is tremendous. If you rather want to make your own food there is plenty of shops that sell food, beverage and alcohol.

Fresh products you can buy in any of the markets. There are a few in Ban Huai Yang, and in Prachuap Khiri Khan and Hua Hin there is even more and bigger. A very special market exists in Dansingkorn some ten miles northwest of Huai Yang on the border of Burma. Thais and tourist mustn't pass over the border to Burma but the merchants from Burma can cross with their products. They sell fantastic furniture cut from a sole wooden piece, gems, jewellery, jars and many other beautiful things.
