The Central Portugal region

As one of the most economically developed regions in the country, Costa de Prata is also home for famous traditional art treasures, such as its porcelain and crystal, as well as its gastronomy, strongly influenced by the sea and counterbalanced by its tasty Bairrada wines and mouth-watering sweets. In the fishing villages or urban historic centres, the kindness of the people is but another asset to add to this bountiful area's vast list of qualities. The curative springs and the lush vegetation of secular forests have preserved all the rewards of their unspoilt nature. The monasteries, convents, castles, churches, and museums witness the priceless historic and artistic heritage of renowned universal value. Places you should not miss:Berlenga Island (20 min by boat) Obidos (17 Km away, 10 minits driving)Sintra (80 Km away, 1 hour driving)Other places to visit:Nazare, Alcobaça, Mafra, Ericeira, Lisbon,...

Baleal

Welcome in "Ilha do Baleal" … " Ilha" means island… However, it is since 1980 not an island any more, because a road has been built… Now it is a beautiful and romantic place, which offers the best conditions for vacation. Both, in Summer as also in Winter time, you will find here outstanding possibilities for young and older, so that nobody will be boring. All the coast around Peniche is full of wonderful strands, which Baleal is the most beautiful one. From Baleal, walking along the beach, you reach Peniche in 20 minutes. We recommend you to visit Berlenga island, 12 km west from the coast, and enjoy this natural island, where you will have the experience to stay in a place with no cars. You may try a diving baptism (The baptism is for people who have never tried to dive before, so this will be the first experience) or take a trip by boat to dive in the several possibilities along the coast - there are several diving companies, which will take you to various places and also rent equipment.Several surf schools are also available, where you may have a course, depending on your level, or just rent the surfing board or the surfing suit. Two different Golf resorts are available 10/20 min driving, where you may play or take some lessons.

“Cosy hideaway”

Reviewed 27 Aug 2012

The chalet is very compact and well-equipped, the owner very helpful and friendly. We stayed for a week in early August when the whole area of Peniche/Baleal was ultra busy but this little house is very quiet, peaceful and hidden away from the madding crowd. On first arriving, we found locating the actual access causeway to Ilha Baleal difficult as there were so many cars parked that the roundabout was invisible. However, once we'd found it, all was well. Parking was very difficult on arrival but once we got to know the alleyways, we parked there. If you are a surfer, perhaps a car is not needed but as we like to explore, it most definitely was necessary. The surrounding area is very interesting and we found lots to do for the week, with evening swims/paddles off either of the beaches which are just minutes' walk away. Eating out was well within walking distance and there was a small supermarket in Baleal on the large campsite, also within walking distance. For our main shopping we went to Peniche for Intermarche but there was a huge 'supermercado' "Continente" at the far end of the Peniche peninsula. We would have liked to have received beforehand a definite time/place for meeting up with the owner on arrival as this was not easy in the crowded conditions of our arrival!
