Bala

There are many reasons to come and stay here at Bala Cottage Holidays, with Snowdon only a 45 minute drive away, the national park awaits. We have some great mountains on the doorstep too for walking, the Berwyns, Aran and Arenig with side of Bala Lake, again wonderful walks where you will rarely meet anyone! There are also walks for the not so fit, Bala Lake itself has some nice walks near by and and the River Dee (Bala lake being the source). We do provide OS maps at the cottages for the local area, we are happy for you to borrow them, also John and myself have climbed many mountains in the area.

North Wales beaches, well where can we start, we are blessed with some of the best beaches, many with dramatic backdrops of the mountains of Snowdonia, you will always find a place and may not see anyone at all! Most are dog friendly, so a perfect place to go for a walk. Here at Bala Cottage Holidays we are a 45 minute drive to our nearest beach at Port Madog, where you will also have the added advantage of the steam railway line when you have had enough of the beach!

If you fancy a castle, then again North Wales has many! From Harlech to Conwy, there are so many to choose from.

For the more adventurous we have the largest National White Water Rafting centre here at Bala and the longest zip wire not far away at Bethesda, also the indoor trampling in Snowdonia too.

“Best weekend in Best place!”

Reviewed 23 Oct 2016

One of the best cottages i have ever visited. Peaceful mind and relaxing one. Right next to the River which gives you the the fresh breeze. We went with a group of 10 people and we enjoyed to the maximum spending time together. I would highly recommend it if u want to explore Snowdonia. And the owner Louise is very welcoming and very kind to us.

Owner's reply: Thank you! Hope to welcome you again

“Lovely cottage in the wilderness”

Reviewed 11 Apr 2016

The title says it all, this is a lovely old house & annex set in a beautiful valley, comfortable for our large family group of all ages for a weekend. The cleanliness, decor & furnishing are a credit to Lou the lady who runs it. Wilderness maybe a slight exaggeration but that's what the children in the group christened it! Good base to explore the area, we would recommend Barmouth, Zipworld & Bryntirion lnn as good experiences but I'm sure there's much much more!

Owner's reply: Thank you for your review and for leaving Dolgadfa so tidy! Guests like yourselves make our job so much easier for changeover, so thank you again and hope to welcome you back in the future.

“Very tranquil.”

Reviewed 5 Mar 2016

We booked this place as it was large enough to accommodate all our visiting friends. The place is great for walks and relaxing, the only real downside is you don't get WiFi in both barns. Which left us all in the small sitting area as we couldn't leave an 8yr old by himself in the main house.

Owner's reply: Many thanks for your kind review, I am sorry to hear that you couldn't get WIFI in the barn annexe, sometimes we are in the hands of BT here and it can be intermittent, the downside of being so rural! But we would both like to say thai you for leaving Dolgadfa so exceptionally tidy, always nice when guests are so appreciative, we hope we can welcome you back in the future

“Home away from home”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2016

We are a family of 5 and decided to go to Snowdonia with friends who are a family of 6. This suited us perfectly seeing there are 2 houses just next to each other in an otherwise rural location (no other houses in sight!). The house was lovely with everything you would need. The log fires worked a charm. It was a particularly wet Christmas (the otherwise small stream at the bottom of the garden was a flowing river/lake) which meant we spent more time in the house than initially thought - this was no bad thing with the house being THAT nice. There are more central locations in Snowdonia to stay in but for a large group and seeing that Snowdonia is not that big with beautiful drives, this is perfect.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind words and glad you had a good Christmas at Dolgadfa, we hope to welcome you back in the future

“A traditional Welsh farmhouse, set perched above the river..”

Reviewed 23 Nov 2015

Dolgadfa offered us as a group of Mums looking to enjoy walking amidst the beauty of the welsh countryside the flexible accommodation we required. It had plenty of bedrooms and bathrooms which were warm and comfortable despite the rain lashing against the windows and gale force winds outside! Great to have thick stone walls! We appreciated the logs for the two open fires as the heating is set to a timer, so they helped warm the main living rooms to keep us cosy. The kitchen has bags of character and an Aga, sadly we struggled to use this properly, maybe inexperience on our part! it never seemed to be hot enough, so we stuck with the conventional oven beside it which worked a treat. The farmhouse is in a lovely quiet location and enjoys beautiful views of the valley. Despite what the elements threw at us we had a lovely time. Many thanks.

Owner's reply: Thank you for your kind comments and glad you had such a good weekend at Dolgadfa despite the weather! Thank you also for leaving the house so tidy it makes a big difference to us. I am sorry that I was unable to come down and see you on Friday as you were arriving late. We do have a folder in the kitchen that explains the Aga and all the other appliances in the house, the Aga is meant to be a slow form of cooking and hence why we have the extra conventional oven if guests wish to have their food cooked quicker! I hope we can can welcome you back in the future

“Lovely old farmhouse in superb location”

Loads of space. We used for family get together. The location is great, very quiet with lovely scenery and the river close by. Certainly considering staying again.

“Beautiful & Serene”

Reviewed 5 Oct 2015

We stayed here for a long weekend (Friday - Monday) and really enjoyed our visit. The farmhouse is very clean, cosy and has loads of character. The thing that makes this house stand out from similar property's is the location.... We can only describe it as idyllic. If you want to unwind listening to nothing except the sounds of Nature then this place is for you. Louise the owner met us on the Friday evening and made us feel very welcome. She was very helpful and knowledgable in regards to the surrounding area. I asked Louise if it was possible to Fly fish on the river Dee that runs along the back of the property. (Something that I had always wanted to try) The very next day Louise had put me in contact with Trevor and on the Saturday afternoon I was having my first lesson... Amazing!.... My wife & I would recommend this property 100% to anybody who wants to just kick back and relax, have a glass of wine and stare up at the stars.

“Peace and quiet in stunning surroundings, with adventure all around”

Stayed at Dolgadfa for one week with two 'oldies', four middle agers and four teenagers. The cottages are very clean and located about 6 miles from Bala (about 1 mile from the nearest village of Llanderfel). The cottages are approached by a single track road and we estimated that there were no more than 10 vehicles per day using this road, you are about a mile from any other properties and people. So silence, beautiful scenery, great fishing on the private stretch of the river Dee. The main house dates back to the 1530's and the oak room divider is from the Spanish armada when the captured warships were dismantled in Liverpool at around that time. Lots of history. The location of the cottages is ideal for exploring all that North Wales has to offer. We spent time visiting Bounce Below, Tyddyn Llan (michellin starred restaurant 2 miles from Dolgadfa), Zip-Line Velocity, Snowdon ascent and descent, and National Whitewater rafting centre. All these activities were less than 1 hour drive away. Interestingly, most of North Wales has no mobile phone signal (Vodafone), but at Dolgadfa all was fine. Internet is available, but very slow (so it was possible to view emails and use the BBC News app, but not suitable for emailing photos or streaming anything). Our kids were entertained all week (the TV reception was very good for those few hours of quite time), and the layout of the houses lends itself to using the newer cottage as a family social lounge in the evenings to play games and wind down at the end of a long day. Lou (the owner) is very hospitable and welcomed us wholeheartedly. She apologised in advance for any noise we might hear during the Wednesday night of our stay as they were having a school leavers party two fields from Dolgadfa. We we all invited which was a very kind thing to do. We didn't hear anything! All in all a great holiday which will always be remembered for all the right reasons. Lots of experiences and memories for all of us.

“Large, well-equipped house in the beautiful Welsh countryside”

Reviewed 25 Aug 2015

Had an excellent stay at Dolgadfa with 7 friends - plenty of room for all of us across the well-equipped house and annex. The location is excellent, in the beautiful countryside and near plenty of activities. Owner was incredibly helpful - met us on our first day and answered any questions before the visit promptly and clearly. We also loved the river out the back! I couldn't recommend this enough for a group of friends or family. The internet connection wasn't always reliable but we were warned about this in advance and it was nice to get away from the emails once in a while!

“Great place for a family get together, well equipped, spacious and lovely location”

Reviewed 18 Jul 2015

Superb accommodation for several families to stay together. Went for a long weekend for my mother in laws 60th birthday. The cottage was clean, nicely styled with traditional furnishings, and a well equipped kitchen. The outside space was great for the kids and some nice country walks can be had down by the river.
