Location description from owner

The Basse-Normandie region

Domfront:-
A beautiful medieval town with cobbled streets and traditional Normandy “Colombage” (timbered) type buildings. In the midst of this medieval town you will find the church of Saint-Julien, a 20th century concrete structure which has just been restored. Interesting.

Roman Town at Jublains:-
About half an hour away by car is the ancient Gallo-Roman town of Jublains. Over a wide area it comprises the remains of a temple, Roman baths, amphitheatre and fortress. The fortress is accessed from the museum in the town and further details can be obtained from the website jublainsfr and though it is in French, you can use the translate button to convert it into English.

Chateau at Carrouges:-
Another beautiful chateau about 25 minutes away is that of Carrouges. Best to park in the town near the church and enjoy the walk down to the chateau. Dating in parts from the 14th century it is an excellent combination of fortress and residence. The park and gardens extend to around 25 acres and are constantly being updated.

Alencon:-
The capital of the Orne department of Lower Normandy. Largely untouched during WW2 it retains many of it's medieval buildings. Famous for it's lace, the “Musée des Beaux-Arts et de la Dentelle d'Alençon” (Museum of fine art and lace) is well worth a visit. Thursday is market day – very busy!

Mayenne:-
A riverside town on the river Mayenne itself with the oldest castle in Europe, shops, cafes, supermarkets – electric boats for hire from the Halte Fluviale.

Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei:-
St. Céneri is one of France's "Plus Beaux Villages de France" - one of France's most beautiful villages. Noted for it's artists who congregate here, inspired by the beauty of the place in this wooded valley on the river Sarthe. Bustling with visitors in the summer yet tranquil and peaceful in the autumn.

"Coco Plage" at Sillé le Guillaume:-
If you decide that you want to go to the beach but don't want to go too far try Coco Plage at Sillé le Guillaume which is about 45 minutes away. It is great for the kids offering safe swimming and beautiful sands. The nearby trees offer plenty of shade for those who just want to relax in the shade. Or maybe just stay back at your gite and let the kids play in the pool there.

Fougères:-
An hour and a quarter away is the magnificent castle or Chateau of Fougères. There has been a castle on this site for more than 1000 years and was originally built to protect the Bretons from the French. The chateau is said to be the largest in Europe and during the summer there are concerts held in the grounds. If you are lucky enough to go on a Saturday there is also a market held in the town.

Saint-Hilaire-du-Harcouët:-
This picturesque town is around an hour from the gite and is one of the largest street markets in Normandy. This takes place every Wednesday morning and could be part of a day trip as it is about halfway to Le Mont St. Michel.

Mont St. Michel:-
Again about an hour and a half away due west, Mont St. Michel is one of France's greatest tourist attractions. Visit the abbey, dedicated to the Archangel, St. Michael and the various museums. Advisable to set off early as it is host to around 3 million visitors per year. As the name would suggest, it is a mount and is not pushchair or wheelchair friendly.

Le Mans:-
About an hour and a half away, a great day out especially if it is around the Le Mans 24 hours. For 2014 this will be on 14th and 15th June. Outside of the racing season the motor museum at the circuit is well worth a visit and afterwards you can visit the Cathedral of St. Julien, the old city and enjoy a coffee in one of the squares near the cathedral.

The Normandy Landings - Débarquement de Normandie:-
Another great day out is a visit to the Normandy Landing Beaches. If you want to make a day of it, you can start with a visit to Pegasus Bridge. Then travel west along the coast taking in Sword, Juno and finally Gold beaches. This will take you to Arromanches, site of the famous Mulberry B Harbour. There are museums at both Pegasus Bridge and Arromanches which are well worth a visit. Finally, travel down to nearby Bayeux and visit the Bayeux Commonwealth War Graves Commission Cemetery which should be a fitting finale to your day out.

Bagnoles-de-l'orne

Your gite is set in beautiful rolling countryside ideal for fishing, walking, cycling, sight-seeing or just relaxing with a glass of wine. The British owners will happily point you in the direction of local activities, many of which have been recommended by previous guests.

Bagnoles de l'Orne:
This elegant spa town is renowned for its waters (Les Thermes). It is also a gastronomic centre and has at least 16 restaurants listed on TripAdvisor along with many activities throughout the summer. Enjoy your lunch then walk around the lake, past the casino and up to the Hotel de Ville (town hall) which is a converted chateau in beautiful grounds. There are also walks through the woods at the edge of the town ideal for wildlife and bird watching. Try the velorail which uses the old railway line running from Bagnoles to Briouze - great fun for the kids.

Great Value Lunches:
Excellent, value for money, working man's (and woman's) lunch - we can recommend the following:-
Le St. Aignan at St. Aignan de Couptrain offering a 4 course lunch for around 11.00€ including wine. 10 minutes by car, 40 minutes by bicycle or 1.5 hours walking.
Le Cheval Blanc, La Chapelle-d'Andaines - again around 11.00€ also including drinks. It is a bit further at 13km but well worth a visit.
La Maison d'Andaine at Juvigny-sous-Andaine is a little further, 16km and in the same class as the previous two. You'll get a great welcome there.
These are just a sample of what we have around here.

Thursday market at La Ferté-Macé
La Ferté-Macé is around 15 minutes from your gite and has a market every Thursday morning. This market is part covered (meat, fish and cheese stalls) and the rest is outdoor. There are cafes in the town so you can browse the market, do your shopping or just sit, have a drink and watch the world go by. There are other markets in the area on other days but these two are about the best of them.

Lassay-les-Chateaux
Lassay-les-Chateaux is a beautiful town about 11km from the gites and has just about one of the best preserved medieval chateaux in the whole of France. The town prides itself on being one of France's "Cités de Caractère" and has a delightful rose garden. A great place to enjoy an impromtu picnic or you can sample one of the bars or restaurants in the town centre.

“A gem of a holiday retreat in an undiscovered area.”

Reviewed 26 Oct 2011

My wife and I stayed in 'Meadow View' in October for a week. We had a delightful time enjoying the cosiness of the gite and the wonderful hospitality of the owners Yvette and George. The gite itself had everything we needed for a very comfortable stay - the well equipped kitchen, spacious lounge and the bathroom with a brand new shower (most welcome after a long day's cycling). Yvette and George couldn't do enough for us - they made very helpful suggestions on places to visit (whatever the weather) and fantastic places to eat. They told us about good routes for cycling, local walks and nearby places of interest such as the cider museum in nearby Lassay and the motor museum in Le Mans. One of their recommendations was the restaurant 'Au Saint-Aignan' which was an easy 30 minute cycle ride from the gite along quiet country lanes. We had a fantastic lunch from the prix fixe menu (10.50 euros) including wine. All the desserts are made by Thierry and are really delicious! Another great suggestion we tried for a relaxing Sunday lunch was La Potiniere du lac in Bagnoles de l'Orne. Bagnoles de l'Orne (a spa town) is a great place for wandering around following a meal and picking up some gifts to take home. The gite is in a really undiscovered part of France and if you want peace and tranquillity, good food and wonderful scenery, it is hard to beat in our experience. The gite is in a beautiful setting with lots of space and views over green, rolling countryside to nearby villages. We had a special experience on one of our walks where we looked into an old derelict barn and were greeted by an enormous barn owl swooping down from the rafters! Again, it was Yvette and George who said that we might find the owl there. We will definitely be returning to this gem of a holiday retreat to discover yet more of this wonderful place.

Many thanks for a lovely review and we were really pleased you enjoyed the newly equipped gite. It was great to meet you both and like many of our guests, you just don't have time to fit in all the things you want to do around here. Hopefully we will see you back again to continue exploring and relaxing.

“A perfect getaway from the stress of the city”

Reviewed 9 Oct 2011

We where looking for an escape from the city and we couldn't have found a more perfect location than Le Maison Neuve. It took us just over four hours drive from Calais, however the French autoroutes put the British motorways to shame and the drive was a pleasure through beautiful countryside with no hold ups (or roadworks!). On arrival we where met by George and Yvette, a lovely couple who have recently taken over the set of three gites. We rented the smallest one bedroom property, however we had more space than we needed with a large ensuite double bedroom upstairs, good sized lounge and very well equipped kitchen, all of which was immaculate on arrival. We have stayed in far more expensive hotels that would not come close to the quality that we found here. The gites all share a pool and communal garden area, and if you take kids there is a playing field with goalposts and badminton/volleyball net located adjacent to this. There is also a selection of bikes available to borrow for exploring the surrounding area. Our top finds where Bagnolle d'Orne which is a lovely town, we had a fantastic evening meal by the lake there. We also discovered the velo rail in another town, which is basically bikes on railway lines. Very bizarre but we had a hilarious couple of hours clunking our way through the french country side. One other little find was the eco musee. Which is just outside Madre and about 15 mins ride on a bike from the gite, a couple of euros each had us entralled by our French guide , he spoke a little English, and with our little French he took us around a traditional French farm that has been preserved. Fascinating stuff and a free french lesson thrown in. Overall , this was a very affordable trip with lots of little surprises to be discovered. We will definitely return.

Many thanks for a great review and we are really pleased that you enjoyed your stay here with us. Most of our guests find that this is a lovely tranquil retreat but with plenty of things to see in the near vicinity so we were really happy that you enjoyed it too. Hope to see you both again somtime.
