The Upper Austria region
The area is both beautiful and cultural, with towns such as Hallstatt and Bad Ischl at opposite ends of the Goisern valley. The whole Salzkammergut is a UNESCO World and Natural Heritage Area.
Surrounded by mountains, with the 3000m Dachstein the highest in the area, there are many nearby ski resorts for all abilities. In summer the 76 lakes of the Salzkammergut offer swimming, diving, boating and sailing. The nearest beach on Lake Hallstatt is just 5 minutes from the apartment. There are hundreds of kilometers of marked walking, hiking and cycling paths and over 1000 kilometers of mountain bike routes. There are two summer bob sleighs in the area and paragliding from the Krippenstein.
The apartment is situated between Bad Goisern and Hallstatt, near to where Lake Hallstatt flows out into the river Traun. The Bad Goisern tennis club is a few minutes away, while in addition to the beach at Lake Hallstatt there is an outdoor swimming pool in Bad Goisern, as well as mini-golf.
The suburb of Au offers local services such as restaurants and bars, a grocer, butcher, baker and bank with cashpoint, and has good transport links by post bus and train across the region, while retaining a quiet and rural aspect.

"Inexpensive and clean - adequate if you are travelling/touring most of the time."
The apartment provided us with a satisfactory base from which to explore the Salzkammergut region of Austria. It was no problem to get onto the main roads to the various lakes and towns surrounding them. The bed was comfortable enough but was a fold out which left you minus a sofa if you did not fold it away. The only other soft seat was a single fold out bed which doubled as an easy chair. The kitchen was lacking in some basics - small bowls, wine glasses, dish washing liquid, small/medium cooking pots. The locale was very quiet and away from grocery shops etc. You needed to drive 2/3 km to the nearest shops. If you like very quiet and do not need more than plain, basic accommodation then this apartment could be satisfactory for you.
I'm glad you enjoyed your stay in the Salzkammergut, and found our property a clean and inexpensive base. I'm sorry that you did not find the general store, bakery and butcher's which are on the main road near the bank and restaurant, a few hundred metres away. We offer two properties. The Apartment is the larger of the two with a separate bedroom and large living room. The Studio, which you rented, does not have a fixed bed because by its very nature it is a one-room apartment with double and single sofabeds. We will review the contents of the kitchen, although it is possible that the previous guests, who left just before you arrived and rented both properties, moved some of the items into the other apartment. I have asked the housekeeper to check more thoroughly in the future. Many thanks for your stay and comments. Jon Bouillot - owner.
