The Styria region

This reigeon of Austria is one of the most breathtaking and beautiful places on earth. Situated in the Austrian Lake District (Salzkammergut) there are many near Bad Aussee and are great for walks, dining and other activities. The Reigions main trade was salt production and there are many attractions detailing the finer aspects of this process and trade.

Bad Aussee

The St.Leonard Apartments are situated in one of the best places if you're looking for winter sports. Next to 3 small towns, there are Ski slopes of varying sizes which cater for all abilities. Tauplitz is the largest of the ski resorts near to the apartments, taking only approximately 20 minutes to drive to from Bad Aussee. This resort has two connecting towns, Bad Mittendorf and the town of Tauplitz. There are many Ski lifts and even more slopes and has recently undergone more work to improve inferstructure with a new Cable Car. There are several routes that will allow you to ski down the mountain to connect to other ski lifts. This resort also has numerous restaurants and bars. For those who do not wish to use a chair lift to take you to the top, a bus service and the new cable car is available from Bad Mittendorf. The highest peak here is approximately 2000 Meters.

Bad Aussee, the town's focus is on culture and tourism. Bad Aussee has a good regional museum, the Kammerhofmuseum, which has exhibits regarding local traditions and customs, the salt trade and a collection of pre-histroic fossils found in the region. There is also a spa in the town centre,Vital Bad Aussee, that offers medicinal brine baths and the Kneipp Cure therapy. This therapy combines cold-water treatment, diets, and outdoor exercise. The town also sponsors a music festival that runs for several weeks in the spring of each year, called the Ausseer Jazzfrühling.

The biggest annual event in Bad Aussee occurs on Faschingsdienstag (Shrove Tuesday), when the Flinserln dress up in sequined costumes and parade through town to announce the coming of spring.

Bad Aussee's other major yearly event is the Narzissenfest (Narcissus Festival). Every spring, on the last weekend in May, participants construct massive floral sculptures made from daffodil blossoms, and parade them through town on large floats, accompanied by regional folk music. Some of these floral sculptures are later displayed along the shores of Grundlsee or Altausseersee, alternating from one year to the next.

Night-life in Bad Aussee centers around a number of, wine bars and pubs.

Vinothek Anna Max is a chic, up-scale wine bar offering a range of primarily Austrian wines. It is located on Meranplatz and on Friday night, they open their doors until late in the evening. Salzhaus is a night club located in one of the old storage houses used for salt production near the train station. There are actually three establishments under one roof: a pizzeria, a lounge, and a dance club. Steirerhof is the late-night staple for most locals. It is located downtown and usually the last stop for a night of revelries.

“Great Apartment - well equipped, lovely views”

Reviewed 21 Sep 2015

Stayed for 9 nights and apartment so well equipped and very comfortable and homely. Lovely views and nice and bright as well. Kitchen very well equipped with plenty of equipment/crockey/cutlery unlike some holiday lets. Such a great area to stay with so many beautiful scenery within a short drive away - I think we visited 13 different lakes ! Alex the owners son who dealt with enquiries was always very quick to respond and always very helpful. No hesitation recommending to anyone and look forward to returning in the future

“Very homely, well equipped, fantastic views - a perfect base”

We stayed for 9 nights and really didn't want to leave when it was time to go home! The apartment slept our family of 5 very comfortably. The location couldn't be better for scenery, and access to ski resorts, the local town and other sights. The locals were very friendly, too, and we couldn't have been made to feel more welcome. A car is essential for getting around. We are definitely coming back as we are now sold on Austria!

“Perfect for the family”

Reviewed 4 Nov 2014

We stayed 4 nights and wish we had stayed longer. Everything was exactly as advertised and a few things were better. The kitchen was very nice and had everything we needed to prepare meals, make coffee and feel at home. We had our kids with us 4yrs to 15yrs and they all enjoyed it too! The setting is spectacular with an amazing view out the balcony of the mountains. I hope we will get a chance to visit again!

“Wonderful appartment”

Reviewed 6 Aug 2014

I spent 12 days here with my three children, aged 22, 20 and 17. We loved the apartment. it was very well equipped and we never tired of the views from the balcony. The apartment is 2 or 3km from Bad Aussee, and a car was essential. We found plenty to do, the 45minute walk to Grundlsee lake, followed by a swim was a particular favourite. A close second was a walk around Altausseer Lake and of course another swim. The towns of Hallstatt and St Wolfgang are well worth a visit, and Wolfgansee was probably the warmest lake!

“A perfect introduction to Austria”

Reviewed 13 May 2014

We have truly enjoyed our first holiday in Austria and thoroughly appreciated the quality and location of the Luke Family Apartment. Being in the heart of the Salzammergut it is ideally placed to visit the many lakes and mountain resorts in the area. The scenery from the apartment is stunning and the town of Bad Aussee is well worth spending sometime exploring. The only downside is that early May is not a good time as some of the attractions do not fully open until the beginning of June but this did not stop us from visiting many of the natural sites in the area. The apartment is very comfortable, well equipped, quiet and relaxing. The information we received from Alex Luke once we had made the booking once first class and very helpful. Thank you - we hope to return again soon.

“Excellent Accommodation”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2014

An excellent apartment, very warm and comfortable, a home from home in every way. The new improvements are well thought out and much appreciated. We last visited about 20 years ago. For our 5th person , the sofa bed was as comfortable as the main beds. Lovely area and lots to do. We came to ski, and although the snow was scratchy in the village, plenty up top for skiing. Lovely food to eat in local restaurants, beware if you are on a Diet! New pool in Bad Mittendorf amazing.

“Fantastic stay”

Reviewed 29 Aug 2013

We (two adults and an 11yr old and 13yr old) arrived in Bad Aussee after a painless drive from Munich airport (we found it cheaper than flying to Salzburg). The flat was immaculately tidy and well equipped. Waking up looking over the mountains was amazing. We found loads to do locally, but highlights for us include mountain biking the (salkamergutweg) to Hallsatt and swimming in the crystal clear waters of Grundlsee, as well as taking the chairlift up Tauplitz. A superb venue.

“Exceeding expectations - felt like home”

Reviewed 18 Feb 2013

Perfectly clean apartment with all necessary amenities and many more extras. Brand new kitchen. Plenty of linen. Car essential. Finding the place at night was a bit of a quest - laughed at ourselves next morning. Ski resorts within 15-20 mins drive. Town of Bad Aussee within 20-30 mins walk (up the hill on the way back though!).

“Fantastic value - with everything you need.”

Reviewed 4 Jan 2013

This self catering apartment is in a lovely town... We went at the end of December. The town was covered in snow and very atmospheric. The apartment is very well equipped with all the necessary amenities. Everything you could think of is in the apartment. It's very comfortable, clean and close to 2 major ski resorts. We went for lessons and hired equipment from neuper and team. They were very helpful.. There are super markets, restaurants, pubs and shops in the town of bad aussee. All in all this was a very good choice of accomodation and very reasonably priced. Will definitely go again.
