The Languedoc-Roussillon region
Azille is a medieval town/village situated in Aude in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, famous for its food, wine, architecture and sunshine. It is an easy drive to the historic and famous walled town and castle of Carcassonne. Canal du Midi winds through Aude and the Minervois area, and is less than 2km from Azille. The Cathar trail runs through Aude and there are many historic remains and reminders of the Cathars and the Albigensian Crusade throughout. Close to the historic and picturesque towns of Minerve, Beziers and Narbonne, and the Mediterranean beaches. There are also many regular produce, antique and bric-a-brac markets within an easy drive of Azille.
Places of interest from between 5 - 40 minutes of Azille include the following:
Carcassonne - with its' spectacular walled city, a Bastide in the lower city and a port on the Canal du Midi.
Canal du Midi - walk or ride alongside, sit in cafés and restaurants beside the Canal, or hire a boat for a day cruise on the Canal.
Béziers - with the Cathédrale St-Nazaire, Musée des Beaux Arts and amazing Fonserannes Lock. Béziers has an annual four day Feria (festival) in mid-August, attracting many of the very best bullfighters and flamenco dancers.
Minerve - a fortified small medieval village that has some interesting shops and galleries, as well as cafés and restaurants.
Caunes Minervois - a picturesque and interesting small medieval village with an 8th century abbey of note.
Narbonne - has a picturesque old centre with a lovely cloister and cathedral. Nearby are the Narbonne beaches.
The Fontfroide Abbey - founded in 1093 and later became a Cistercian monastery.
A little further afield but within easy day-trip distance are Montpellier, Perpignan and Toulouse. Spain and the Pyrenees are only 2 hours away, and Barcelona a 3 hour drive.
Azille is a winemaking town within the Minervois wine area, with several wine tasting and sales outlets in and around the town for the local wines. Azille hosts a number of festivals and markets during the year, including the Feria which is usually held around the start of May, a Feast of wineries in July, night markets in August, and a Feast of Autumn in October. There are also regular Vide Grenier (bric-a-brac/antique) markets held in Azille.
There are several good weekly town markets in the area including in Olonzac on Tuesdays, and Lézignan-Corbières on Wednesdays.
The Canal du Midi is a couple of kilometres away, offering walking and bike riding tracks. The village of Homps, 5 kms away, is a port town on the Canal du Midi that has good cafes and restaurants, many fronting on to the canal. Also nearby (2.5 kms) is La Redorte, a pretty town on the Canal with several cafes and restaurants, a good boulangerie and large supermarket. Many other small towns are close by including the wine producing towns of La Liviniere and Siran.

"Delightfully restored, well equipped & comfortable house in French village."
We enjoyed the house, the village and the province. The house has all amenities and equipment for a very comfortable stay. The village is historic and well worth exploring. Access to a car is essential as there are many places to visit, as well as great walks, climbs to ancient castles and cycling activities. The Canal du Midi and Carcasson deserve a special mention. The wine of the region is a well kept secret. We especially loved the full-bodied reds.
