Location description from owner

The Alentejo region

The house is located at the foot of "Serra da Arrábida", wich provides acess to a large number of activities. For the ones who like to walk, there are advised routes from Setúbal to Portinho da Arrábida, including rising to the top of the mountain, where you can see one of the last examples of mediterranean scrub, specifics fauna( genet, birds of prey, wild cats, bats and insects) and flora (like picket oak, arbutus, aroeira and heather tree). It is also a land with wine-growing and cheese tradition, with museums to visit and other experiences that the owners provide such as wine and cheese tasting. Being between Tagus and Sado rivers, the ferry will take you to the modern marina of Troia. 40 minutes from the centre of Lisbon, driving south, is Serra da Arrábida natural park - a protected area with hills rising over 500 metres and 30km stretch. Arrabida beach is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. With its calm waters, its ideal for swimming and snorkelling. In terms of gastronomy, the Southern part of Lisbon is an area of the most freshly caught fish with an abundance of sea food. The customary high quality of the catch justifies that certain species are often associated with these places: whiting, swordfish, sea Bass, daurade and clams from Sesimbra and red mullet and crabs from Setúbal. Cheese made from ewe's milk in Azeitão and wines produced in the region of Palmela, with special emphasis on "Moscatel" and "Periquita" varieties, are also internationally renowned for their high quality.

Azeitao

The house is located at Gof course Quinta do Peru, 6 Km far from Azeitão village, where you will find a reasonable range of shops, a bakery, a bank, post office and supermarkets. It also has excellent wine cellars (which you can visit). Wine, cheeses and a kind of small Swiss roll ("tortas") are all specialities of the village. For those who like to cook their own fish/seafood, buy from the markets in Setúbal or Sesimbra (although there’s usually excellent fish at the small market in Azeitão). Meat can be bought easily enough from the butcher or supermarket in the village. Sesimbra city is also famous for fish and shellfish restaurants.Nearby, there are a number of places to visit and there are tours of the Serra da Arrábida, boat trips to see dolphins and lots of beaches (which can get pretty crowded in summer, but you can beat the crowds by getting there early - the house is 15 kms by road from the nearest beaches). The magnificent bay of Portinho de Arrabida, with its clear quiet waters, is ideal for water sports; the local white sandy beaches are as close as 15 Km and the Arrabida beach is known to be one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. With its calm waters, its ideal for swimming and snorkelling. Some of the best scuba diving in Portugal can be done from Portinho de Arrabida and Sesimbra, a few kms away. There is a local scuba diving centre where wonderful dives can be organized. Finally, for the golfers, there are two recommended championship golf courses: Quinta de Perú ( on site) and Aroeira ( 15Km), Tróia (20 kms and a ferry away) a difficult course but one of the most beautiful in Portugal, and Riba Golf (40 Kms away). For detailed information about the region: contact us or search for Azeitão and Arrábida. Find also official information respecting Setúbal and Sesimbra.
