The Andalucia region

Isla Canela borders the Guidarno river dividing Spain and Portugal, making both coasts and the hinterland hills very accessible.

The Algarve climate is excellent throughout the year and boasts about 345 days of sushine - perfect for a summer holiday or a winter holiday.

Isla Canela has miles of beaches, and includes the old fishing village of Punta Morel. The property is only 2 kilometres away from the nearest beach and marina, perfect for enjoying the lovely climate of the area. There are many golf courses in the area.

Apartment occupants get reduced green fees, and there are books of 10 tickets at a discount, as well as 2 rounds & a buggy package.

There are supposed to be owners and guests roll ups on Wednesdays, but may not be every week. On our last visit this was actually a roll up organised by the Director of golf, but just check with the golf shop.

There are a number of other good golf courses within 30 minutes; Castro Marim just into Portugal, and a brand new one just opened nearby on that side of the border. We sometimes have a drink at the bar for the view. There is also Quinta de Cima & Quinta de Ria a bit further, off the main N125 rd towards Tavira. In Spain, Esuri 15 minutes away, Islantilla, and El Rompido further on.

Locally, there are a few restaurants on the Marina, and Punta Morel, which is the old fishing harbour, has a couple of family run restaurants which have excellent fish. Most will be found in Ayamonte and Vila Real. During the day, a pleasant time can be had over a coffee or lunch at some of the beach bars. If you catch the tide out the beach area is vast, not crowded and beautiful, especially near the river mouth (take the rd to the beach). Beach extends all the way to the hotel Riu on the Marina side.

Along the Portuguese coast there are 2 favourites, for lunch in particular; leave m`way at second exit in Portugal, “Monte Gordo & N125”, and follow to N125 roundabout. Turn right towards Tavira. The Costa Restaurante in Fabrica is beside a beach and lagoon-very pretty. Take the Cacela Velha turning left off the N125. When you reach Cacela (hamlet worth a quick look for view) Fabrica is signed right and onwards.

For a restaurant on the beach try Playa Verde. At the N125 roundabout turn left towards Vila Real and Playa Verde is a turning on the right. You will reach a small complex inc. shop where you can park and walk down to beach, or it is possible to drive down unmade track and park on the sand. To enjoy at their best avoid any days when there are strong winds blowing off Atlantic.

Marina area mini market ok for some basics and easy! Good ice cream choice further along the block.

In Ayamonte there are several supermarkets, the nearest is on way into town by a roundabout. If you prefer to keep out of town centre there is one as you are entering the town from the suspension bridge. Ayamonte has a good covered food market. (Ask directions if you don`t bump into it).

Interesting shops in Ayamonte near the waterfront, and it's opposite number in Portugal Vila Real St Antonio particularly if you should want linen! Either drive round to Vila Real or passenger ferry across from Ayamonte.

Birdwatching/walking can be had in the nature reserve seen from the apartment. Entrance on the left just before mini roundabout into Punta Morel. Easier to see and approach from that roundabout as the sign is set before the unmarked entrance.

10 minute ferry trip over to Villa Real with its marina, cobbled streets, citrus trees and bars/rest. is worth a visit. River trips can be booked from here as well as Canela Marina (different trips)
