The Basse-Normandie region
Avranches is situated at the bottom corner of Lower Normandy (Basse Normandie) where it joins Brittany. There are many beautiful towns and cities to visit such as St. Malo, Dinard, Dinan, Rennes [the capital of Brittany], St. James with its American War Cemetery, the bustling market town of St. Hilaire, Villedieu les Poeles, Bayeux, Cherbourg and Caen.
The D-Day Landing Beaches of Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword are 1 hour to the North of Avranches and there are numerous Museums and War Cemeteries which give a moving recollection of this era and all well worth the visit.
The Coast around Lower Normandy lands12% of the total fish and sea food of France. A visit to at least one of the coastal fishing towns is a must to sample the superb range sea food on offer. We suggest Cancale as a perfect example, where sea-front restaurants are in abundance.
South Normandy offers an ideal base for exploring the Normandy and Brittany countryside and many historic towns. 2014 sees the 70th anniversary of the D Day Normandy Landings of World War 2. The beaches, museums and war cemeteries are all within easy reach.
Avranches is a town associated with recent [WW2] and ancient history. General Patton's 'Avranches Breakthrough' on 31st July 1944 is commemorated with 'Patton Monumental Square' with its WW2 tank.
To the east of Avranches is the busy market town of St. Hilaire du Harcouet which bustles on a Wednesday morning with locals and tourists. A few miles to the south, is the town of St. James where there is the Brittany American War Cemetery. David and Barbara are members of 'Des Fleurs de la Memoire' which places flowers on the tombs of fallen American soldiers.
Further south are the towns of Fougeres with its Medieval Chateau [Castle] and Vitre with its half timbered houses and private mansions. And even further south, but still only 45 minutes from Avranches is the capital city of Brittany, Rennes.
Travelling west there is Mont St. Michel which is the second most visited tourist attraction of France. Still further to the west but still only 45 minutes from Avranches is the walled city of St. Malo with stunning views of the Brittany coastline beyond.
Take a boat trip down the River Rance and admire the villages along its banks until you reach the town of Dinan which is another Medieval town with half timbered houses, gardens, markets and a fantastic selection of restaurants and outdoor cafes. Returning back to Avranches you can meander along country roads visiting on the way, Combourg with its Medieval Chateau and Dol de Bretagne.
Travelling north from Avranches, travelling up the Cotentin Peninsula. There is the quaint fishing port of Granville from where you can take a boat to the Isles de Chausey or to the English Islands of Jersey or Guernsey. Granville has a lively Casino and Christian Dior's House and Gardens are a must to see, perched on the cliffs of Granville.
