CASA LA FRONTERA DEL CIELO (The House Next To Heaven)

This house sits standing watch at the top of a mountain, at an altitude of over 3200 feet, above the town of Atenas overlooking the great western valley that extends all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Located as it is at 'Heaven's doorstep', it has the most astonishing views found in Central America available right out of your living room, day or night. Not only can you see the Costa Rican lush (possessing all conceivable shades of green!) rainforest from most of the perimeter of the property, but can also take in the Pacific coast and ocean from your infinity pool. Enjoy your very own private garden teeming with wildlife, vivid tropical flora and fruit trees including avocado, lemon, mango, banana, plantain, guava, coffee and other exotic delicacies. Watch and listen to the local wild birds as they sing and flit from tree to tree in the grove behind the house. (You'll be astounded at how close the little chicks get when they pay you a visit at the pool during one of Costa Rica's gentle rains.) Enjoy the soothing breezes from your hammock in the front of the house, or in the house's unique reading room which allows you, while staying indoors, to enjoy the cross wind that comes up one side of the mountain and down the other. [ National Geographic named Atenas as having the BEST climate in the world. Experience it for yourself! ] And the vistas don't quit. You can still drink them in during the unparalleled experience of the house's 'jacuzzi with a view', or while bar-b-queuing or dining al fresco in the house's veranda.

The house, which sleeps two to eight people, is itself an architectural marvel. The striking wrought iron winding staircase and railings naturally draw your eyes to the dramatic twenty-foot-high wood ceilings in the main house. The kitchen's silver and gold-veined marble counters invite you to join your other guests to sit and share in a meal or cocktails. The open design of the reading room, with its large windows that make you feel like you are outside while still indoor, provides a road map to relaxation. Excellently appointed throughout, the house's two other bedrooms and three bathrooms are, likewise, marked by impressive attention to detail as evidenced by exquisite marble and wood finishes, and finely crafted furniture and fixtures.

A five minute drive to Atenas, but also, given its central location in the country, it is close to most of the main attractions in Costa Rica: including its volcanoes, butterfly gardens, rainforests equipped with canopy tours and zip lines waiting for you to explore them and, yes, it's within driving distance of the famous Pacific coast beaches. Multiple tours in the area allow for boating, white water rafting, hiking, horseback riding, and so much more. For those seeking culture, Escazú (a sophisticated bilingual area of fabulous restaurants, stores, exclusive boutiques, English language bookstores and movie theaters) is also a 45-minute drive away.

As an additional service to our house guests, we offer a fee-based airport pick up and drop-off to help you avoid the potential hassles involved in the transitions into and out of your time in Costa Rica (something to particularly consider when you have night-time travel plans, but a nice comfort to have in any event). We also provide car rentals and tours to all corners of the country, including the Poas and Arenal volcanoes, a 'crocodile tour' to Jaco, a tour to the La Paz Waterfall gardens, and we specialize in tours custom made to our guests' requests throughout Costa Rica.

Getting around

First, do you need to rent a car at all if you are going to be staying at Casa La Frontera del Cielo? The answer is no, with some caveats. To begin with, you can just contract the Veltmans for their pick-up and drop-off service to and from the San Jose/SJO airport (plus they personally drive you on any excursions booked with them). You do Not need a vehicle if you plan to spend a lot of time just relaxing at Casa La Frontera del Cielo. Even if you plan on traveling quite a bit, you still do not absolutely need to rent a car as there is easily accessible and thoroughly Inexpensive Taxi services that reach the property. In our overall experience, utilizing the taxi service, even on a daily basis, would end up being cheaper than a car rental.

Interaction with guest

We provide our guests with our property managers', the Veltman's, contact info as soon as a reservation is confirmed but, if you prefer, we can have you contact them now if you would like a quote for any of these services, including a private cook. (Just let us know your preference.) To be clear, though, you are under absolutely No obligation to book any of their services. They will then only conduct your check-in and orientation upon your arrival at the property, and your check out upon your departure. They will then be a text, email or phone call away should our guests need them for anything!
