Location description from owner

The Languedoc-Roussillon region

The Languedoc stretches from the Rhone Valley to the Spanish border and eastern Pyrenees, from the spectacular Massif Central mountain range, through hills and plains carpeted with vines and olive groves to the Mediterraneans beaches and lagoons full of oyster and mussel beds. This rich diversity ensures that there is something to suit all tastes and interests.

The area is steeped in history from the Cathar Castles in the Pyrenean foothills to the Crusader towns of Aigues Mortes and Le Couvertorade. The Roman towns of Nimes, Arles, Narbonne and Avignon are all within a days drive. The medieval town of St Guilham le Desert is not to be missed for its fabulous setting and its famous abbey.

Swimming in the river at the mouth of the Gorges dHerault is only a ten minute drive; canoes can be hired on the large sandy beach for breathtaking views as you paddle up the gorge. The beautiful Lake Salagou is twenty minutes away and offers safe bathing, windsurfing, sailing, pedelos, bike hire and horse riding. Sandy beaches on the coast are all within forty minutes drive. Several excellent Golf courses are available in Montpellier, Lamalou les Bains and Beziers.

The varied countryside is a walkers paradise the footpaths are well marked, local tourist offices provide suggested itineraries to suit all levels of ability. The spectacular limestone rock formations give rise to wonderful gorges and scenery including the Cirque de Navacelles, Cirque de Moureze, Gorge dHerault and the caves of Clamouse and Desmoiselles.

The sophisticated City of Montpellier is ahaven for shoppers with its ancient narrow streets offering everything from antiques to the best in French Haute Couture. There is an excellent range of restaurants and pavement cafes where you can enjoy being entertained by a wide range of street artists and musicians during the summer evenings. The newly inaugurated tramway system is highly efficient and avoids the need to take your car into the town centre.

Weekly street markets are held in Gignac, Clermont Herault and Pezenas and Lodeve, here you will find an unbeatable array of local produce including olives, cheeses, fruit, vegetables and colourful Provencal textiles. There are also daily markets in Montpellier and a weekly flea market on Sunday mornings.

“Privacy and Relaxation”

Reviewed 2 Aug 2015

Perfect for couple seeking quiet and private stay in typical French village. High end appliances in house, with well designed interior and exterior decor. Small bar/cafe (Cafe de la Poste) in village served basic but authentic and good quality meals and local wine, only 5 minutes walk from house. Drawbacks - air conditioning struggled to cope with extreme heatwave during our stay and we found wifi and mobile phone signal unreliable; garage rather small and awkwardly shaped for large saloon car. Would we stay again? - Definitely!

Thanks Bernadine it was exceptionally hot during your stay! The owners have aquired the adjoining property so that the garden area will be much bigger next year.

“Lovely and tranquil”

Reviewed 25 Jul 2015

House has all one needs: sun terrace, plunge pool, modern fully equipped interior and garage. Quiet village, bakery, local convenience (food) shop, chemist, café. Close to market town.

The terrace has been doubled in sized and now boasts sun throughout the day.

“Total luxury in total privacy”

Reviewed 15 Jun 2013

We spent almost a month at 'La Solene' for a combination of work and play and have to say we really enjoyed ourselves. The facilities at the house are amazing, with the very best of appliances, a well equipped kitchen, a great BBQ out in the courtyard and the best Broadband ever. The bedrooms are very good with comfortable beds and bathroom facilities are very clean. As we went in May the weather was unpredictable so we didn't use the pool but when the sun showed up the total privacy in the courtyard was great. The pool lights up at night so throws a wonderful ambiance for a romantic dinner. Overall a great stay and could have stayed longer.
