The Scotland region

The Outer Hebrides is the least developed and least populated of Scotland's main island groups, and is renown for its extraordinary abundance and variety of wildlife. The Uists (Berneray, North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay - and various other smaller islands) are especially known for their numerous long white-sand beaches of the Atlandtic shore, the shallow aquamarine seas, countless gulls wading and diving birds. On the east, vast tracts of moor and mountain - speckled with countless lochs - are a home to otters, eagles, and deer. Between these the scattered crofting communities are the last refuge of traditional non-intensive subsitence agriculture, with traditional breeds of cattle, hardy sheep, and meadows rich in wild flowers orchids.

Askernish

8 Askernish is one of about a dozen or so crofts (small-holdings) and private houses that make up Aksernish township, scattered along a quiet lane, about a mile long, leading from South Uist's main north-south road to the west - the Atlantic - coast of the island. Amongs the dunes is the famous Askernish golf course - a spectacular links golf course first laid out more than a century ago by 'Old Tom Morris' and restored about 2009. 8 Askernish is the perfect base for wildlife-watching, walking, cycling, whether along the quiet roads, or the sandy lanes and beaches. However you get about (there's an excellent bus service but there's also cycles and cars available for hire), you surely can't miss the abundant wildlfe, with everything from basking sharks and whales to sea eagles, and everything in-between, including many species (such as corncrake, yellow-backed bumblebees, orchids) that elsewhere are rare or have disappeared altogether.
