Location description from owner

The England region

The Peak District is situated at the southern end of the Pennines in Central England covering most of northern Derbyshire as well as parts of Cheshire, Yorkshire and Staffordshire. Over 22 million day visits are made to the Peak District National Park every year, making it the second-most visited National Park in the world. For those interested in history, there are a number of stately homes to visit such as Chatsworth, Haddon Hall and Eyam Hall, all of which offer a range of cultural activities throughout the year. The Peak District provides opportunities for many types of outdoor activity. An extensive network of public footpaths and numerous long-distance trails (over 3000 km in total), as well as large open-access areas, are available for hillwalking and hiking. Bridleways are commonly used by mountain bikers, as well as horse riders. Some of the long-distance trails re-use former railway lines; they are much used by walkers, horse riders and cyclists.

Ashford-in-the-Water

The local towns of Bakewell, Buxton and Matlock Bath, each famous in its own right, offer culture, shopping, restaurants and traditional markets and if you still have energy, there is always the famous theme park of Alton Towers. The beautiful village of Ashford-in-the-Water lies near the heart of the Peak District, three miles from the bustling market town of Bakewell, five miles from Buxton, famous for its spa and waters, and less than 15 miles from Sheffield. There are excellent walks from the door, especially down Deep Dale to reach the River Wye or down Lathkill Dale and Cressbrook Dales down to Monsal Dale and Monsal Head. Cressbrook Dale and Tansley Dale are famous for their wild flowers, as are several other local dales. In the summer, Ashford in the Water and many other local villages create unique well dressings from flower petals. And we have our very own Sheldon Day, including a Poultry show and Dog show.At Christmas time, the area hosts a range of Christmas activities, such as carols in the caves at Castleton, music by local brass bands, events at nearby Chatsworth House, Xmas markets and whole villages dressed with Christmas lights..

“Lovely cottage retreat”

Reviewed 29 Mar 2016

We really enjoyed the cottage. It was beautifully clean and well presented on arrival. Had pretty much everything you needed for a self catering cottage, even an airer to dry or wet walking clothes. Ashford in the Water is the perfect place for some many wonderful walks. There are two pubs and a restaurant and the shop in the village as well as a corner shop. So everything you need is on your doorstep. The owner is very responsive and communicated very well. We will definitely return.

Thank you for taking the time to provide us a review and we are pleased that you enjoyed your time at the Old Bakery and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Regards, LF

“A trully excellent place to stay”

Reviewed 2 Mar 2016

Clean smart, well appointed. traditional on the outside, modern on the inside. The best equipped kitchen of any holiday rental I have ever stayed in. Felt like a home from home. The fact that it is set in the Peak District, my favorite place in the UK makes this a win win place to stay. I am already recommending that if friends stay in the Peak District, they should check out the Old Bakery Cottage.

Thank you for the great review. We are so pleased that you enjoyed our cottage and we really appreciate your compliments. Thank you again for choosing us for your stay in the Peaks and we look forward to welcoming you back to the Old Bakery very soon!. Kind Regards, LF

“A fantastic propoerty in every way”

Reviewed 1 Mar 2016

We stayed at this delightful property for 3 nights in February 2016. As soon as you reach the property you are welcomed by its charm, stunning exterior set in a beautiful village. The cottage was lovely and clean on arrival and had every amenity and little extra that you could possibly want for your stay. Our 2 children had plenty of space in the second bedroom and loved the large, modern bathroom. The kitchen is well equipped and the addition of a washer/dryer was very handy given the weather during our stay. The owner provides you with an excellent amount of detail, not only about the property, but the surrounding area as well. The little extras like a big TV and Wi-Fi are fantastic especially with kids. The owner was very responsive and provided us with great advice on local attractions and walks. The village is amazing, I highly recommend both pubs where the food and drink was amazing and we found the staff very welcoming for the whole family. Breakfast in the Tea room was lovely and was the perfect start for walking the Peaks. The village is perfectly situated to walk to Bakewell along the river. I fully recommend it as Bakewell is a lovely small town. We will be back in 2016, and for many years to come. Thank you

Thank you for such a great review. We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay, and it seems like you made the most of your time at the Old Bakery. Thank you again for choosing our cottage and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Regards, LF

“A comfortable cottage in an attractive location”

Reviewed 19 Jan 2016

The cottage opens directly onto the street, but the road through the village is not very busy hence there was little noise, and parking close to the front door was no problem. The cottage was clean and tidy and well-prepared for our arrival, with two bottles of wine awaiting us in the middle of the dining-table. The kitchen was compact, but equipped with everything we needed. All in all, the cottage was well-maintained and presented to a high standard. The village is delightfully picturesque with many different walks possible, varying in length and difficulty, without actually having to take the car anywhere. The Monsal Trail, with cycle hire at Hassop Station, is within easy reach, and it's possible to walk the two miles into Bakewell along the river. If sufficient calories have been used up, a small detour will bring you to Holdsworth's chocolate factory shop. The Bull's Head provided good wholesome food, and for a slightly more varied menu we also tried the Ashford Arms. The owner, though only accessible by phone, was extremely friendly and helpful.

Thank you for the kind review and we are so pleased you enjoyed your stay at the Old Bakery Cottage. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. Kind Regards, LF

“A cosy, comfortable and well equipped cottage in a lovely location.”

Reviewed 10 Jan 2016

We really enjoyed our three nights in this cottage. It had everything we needed for our stay, including a very efficient central heating system, gas fire, gorgeous bathroom with a drench shower, comfy bed, hairdryers,TV and cooking equipment. Towels, teatowels and toilet rolls were also provided.Picking up the keys from the village shop was very convenient and we had no trouble parking right outside the cottage. We found it very useful to be able to connect to wifi, The weather was chilly for much of our stay and it was lovely to come back to the cottage and thaw out and be cosy. The cottage itself was spacious, with lovely original features, but modernised to a very high standard. It also had a very pretty, private outside seating area.It is a great base for exploring the beautiful surrounding countryside. We have already recommended it to our friends and would certainly book it again.

Thank you so much for the great review, we are so pleased that you enjoyed the Old Bakery Cottage and the Peaks. We thank you again for choosing our cottage and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Regards, LF

“We just can't wait to return!”

Reviewed 3 Dec 2015

We have stayed here previously and love it. Fantastic location. Beautiful cottage. Brilliant pubs, within easy walking distance. Lovely walk into Bakewell. This time it provided a perfect base to visit Chatsworth Christmas Fayre. Chatsworth House decorated for Christmas. Bakewell Market. All thoroughly enjoyable. We are planning our next escape to this idyllic cottage. Thank you again Liam.

We are so please you enjoyed your stay at the Old Bakery, it sounds like you made the most of your time and got to explore the wonderful peaks and surrounding area. We look forward to welcoming you again soon. Regards, LF

“Nice to return to, at the end of the day”

Reviewed 22 Nov 2015

A lovely snug, cosy, cottage, but with plenty of space. Upstairs there are two genuinely double bedrooms, with comfortable beds, and nice quilts. The bathroom is very well appointed, and spacious - ideal to lay and soak in the bath after a day's walking. A fine selection of towels compliment the decor. Downstairs is also spacious with more than enough equipment in the kitchen for self catering, although with two fine pubs just down the street the chef is certain to get a break. The living room is a good size, and has a lovely gas fire that soon warms the room, whilst providing a lovely glow. The cottage throughout is kept at a very comfortable temperature, and despite some cold nights, there was no condensation. One negative observation - the sofas are comfy for sitting on whilst reading etc, but, when viewing the tv that is raised above the fireplace, they become less so. Despite this I would quite happily return to the cottage, and probably will do so. Ashford in the Water really does have everything. The pubs are accompanied by an excellent village store, tea room, and beautiful church. A brilliant base from which to explore the Peak District.

Its great that you enjoyed your stay at the Old Bakery Cottage. Thank you for the feedback regarding our John Lewis sofas and the TV. We agree they are very comfy, the only available place for the TV is on the wall above our fireplace, note the TV is also on a fully swivled bracket and so can be angled to anywhere in the room. Thanks again for choosing our cottage and we look forward to welcoming you again soon. Regards, LF

We have stayed many times in the village in various cottages. Our last stay in the Old Bakery was many years ago. We were delighted to see that it was back on the rental market, and we're not disappointed! Beautifully renovated , the cottage is clean, warm and comfortable. We had a wonderful stay enjoying the local facilities......The Ashford Arms having great food , and The Bull for a quiet drink in the evening. We will be back!!

It’s great to welcome someone that has been to the cottage before we bought and renovated it, and we are so glad that you like what we have done to the property. Thank you for the kind review and we hope to welcome you again soon. Regards, LF
