The England region

Holly Cottage is near to the market town of Ashbourne in the Derbyshire Dales, on the edge of the Peak District. Ashbourne has a weekly market and provides excellent shops for either browsing or buying. On Shrove Tuesday the ancient game of Ashbourne football is played through the streets of the town, with as many as 400 people in each team. It is a sight to behold, however joining in is not for the fainthearted!!
The Peak District National Park was the first to be created in England, covering over 500 sq miles and is right on the doorstep. The beautiful countryside is ideal for walking and cycling. There are numerous towns and villages to explore, either on foot or by car. Many National Trust properties and stately homes are within easy reach, and the surrounding villages hold Well Dressing ceremonies throughout the summer, where the local residents decorate the village well with thousands of flower petals, as they have done for hundreds of years. We are about 3 miles from Alton Towers resort for thrill seekers, or anyone wanting to use the spa facilities or swimming pools. Whether you want a totally chilled holiday or an action packed adrenaline fueled adventure, Holly Cottage is in just the right place.

“Beautiful cottage”

Reviewed 8 Oct 2016

Had a wonderful time. Cottage was cosy and immaculate with everything you need for two! Great location for walks. Did some beautiful walks during our stay. Local pub was close by. Visited for drinks but didn't eat. It's supposed to be very good but you need to book. They weren't hugely accommodating if you hadn't and wouldn't even let you order bar food (despite having a bar food menu) to eat outside at lunch. A little stuffy and little flexibility which was a shame. All in all a lovely stay and would highly recommend. Make sure if you enjoy walking you look up the best walks. It is definitely worth planning.

Hi Nikki & Paul. Pleased that you liked the cottage, and enjoyed your stay. Thanks for leaving the walking routes you explored for future guests to enjoy - very thoughtful. Sorry that the pub weren't helpful, which is very unusual; they are normally very accommodating. Leave them a Trip Advisor review ;-)

Can't fault Holly Cottage in any way. Excellent. Well-defined and with plenty of space for two. Good and helpful booking and hand-over. Duncombe Arms just five minutes walk is a big asset.

“Lovely cottage within a peaceful village”

Reviewed 13 Aug 2016

Holly Cottage is perfect for a peaceful stay in the area. The cottage is spotlessly clean complete with everything you need. We met Michele on arrival who showed us around and recommended the Duncombe Arms (dog friendly), which serves tasty food complete with exceptional service. We enjoyed plenty of walks with our dog and met Michele on one of these and she was kind enough to show us around her farm. Definitely recommend for couples looking for a quiet week away.

Thanks for sharing your experience of Holly Cottage - so pleased that everything was up to scratch. Hope to see you all again; perhaps when Max's legs have stopped aching?

“Sensational Stay”

Reviewed 10 Feb 2016

It's very difficult to find words to say about Holly Cottage that haven't been said already. We chose Holly Cottage based on the TripAdvisor reviews and we were not disappointed in any way. We were met by Michele who made us very welcome when we arrived. She kindly showed us around and where everything was located and told us about places of interest near by. There were a number of brochures available, which helped us during our weeks stay. The cottage itself is very well appointed and extremely comfortable. The kitchen is on the small size but more than sufficient for two people; I cooked most evenings, including a full roast dinner, everything needed was available. The cottage is ideally located for visiting the Peak District with many interesting places within a short driving distance. The local pub, The Duncombe Arms, is quite charming and provides a good range of drinks and the food is excellent. Reviews can at times mislead you but take it from me you can believe all that you read about Holly Cottage and Michele. Would I recommend it, absolutely! Would I return, definitely.

Thank you for your lovely recommendation. So glad that you enjoyed your stay, and of course we would be most glad to welcome you back any time.

“Gorgeous, idyllic cottage”

Reviewed 26 Mar 2015

We have just returned from a 3 night stay at Holly cottage, Ellastone (Ashbourne) which we booked from reading numerous reviews and from having a good look through the cottage information and photos. On arrival we were greeted by the owner Michele who showed us around and went through how things worked etc. and we also received a "welcome" pack of Milk, Biscuits, Tea and Coffee. We have to say that we were not disappointed with the cleanliness and excellent decor and the cottage had everything needed to make it a home from home which showed that a lot of thought has gone into it. There are some good walks around the village and the cottage is a handy base location for visiting many of the Derbyshire Peak district villages/ attractions. The Duncombe Arms pub is only a 5 minute walk away and serves real ales (as well as the usual beers), good wine and top notch food. A real gem of a cottage. Many thanks Michele.

Really glad that you enjoyed your stay Amanda, and I would love to welcome you back anytime (including Ollie who was a perfect genteleman).

A lovely cottage, very cosy and everything to a good standard. Some really nice touches - welcome pack, bed linen, towels, soap and shampoo - made it really easy. Lots to do in a lovely are. The restaurant at the village pub was very nice and only a 5 minute walk.

Welcome back any time. Lovely guests.
