Description

For a small town with about 6,400 inhabitants, Artà offers its visitors a lot of variety. In addition there are the diverse scenic impressions in the Llevant region in the northeast of Mallorca. The municipality of Arta includes the port and seaside resort Colònia de Sant Pere, as well as the villages of Montferrux, Betlem, Sant Pere and the small beach "Platja de s'Estanyol". Ten more beach bays are located in the municipality, including the natural "Cala Torta" east of the rocky bay "Cala Estreta" and the sandy bay "Cala Mitjana". The resort of Cala Ratjada and the beach "Font de Sa Cala" are reached in 15 minutes. It takes 20 minutes to drive to the northeastern "Punta de Sa Barracca", where the 1700 m long and 30 m wide natural and dune beach "S'Arenal de Sa Canova" begins at the Badia d'Alcúdia. The jewel is the beach "Sa Font Celada", which can only be reached by a 4 km long footpath. The hills of the "Massís d'Artà" characterize the peninsula of Arta, whose 25 km long coast has remained undeveloped. The largely untouched north forms the nature reserve "Parc natural de la península de Llevant". Olive groves and almond tree plantations surround the traditional town of Artà. In 1232 it was first mentioned in documents, at that time under the name "Yartán", a derivative of "Gertan" (Arabic: garden). The fact that the Talayot ​​prehistoric culture was established in this region is proven by findings such as the "Dolmen of S'Aigua Dolça" between Colònia de Sant Pere and Betlem and the estate "Sa Canova de Morell". Near the town is the archaeological site "Ses Païsses". The picturesque townscape of Artàs with the Calvary, which is visible from afar, attracts many visitors who are holidaying in other Mallorcan regions. If you want to climb up to the Church of Santuari de Sant Salvador, built in 1832, follow the signposted path from Plaça de Espanya. At the foot of the town hill is the late Gothic fortified church "Transfiguratió del Senyor" with a worth seeing interior. From there 180 steps lead to the impressive historic fortress, which is said to date from the time of the Arab occupation. Other attractions include the Franciscan Monastery "Sant Antoni de Pàdua", whose Baroque church has a barrel vault, the Monastery "Santa Maria del Bellpuig" and the Hermit of "Betlem" in the mountains northwest of Artà, reachable via a meditative hiking trail. There you can enjoy a wonderful view of the sea and Colònia de Sant Pere. The famous caves "Coves d'Artà" with the breathtaking "Hall of the Thousand Pillars" are located near Capdepera on the east coast.
