The Canary Islands region
Lanzarote is situated just 79 miles off the coast of Africa and is the most easterly of the Canary Islands. The island is 37 miles (60km) long and 12 miles (20 km) wide, making it the fourth largest island in the Canaries.
Lanzarote enjoys a mild dry climate with average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21°C in January to 29°C in August. Annual rainfall is just 140mm (5.5 inches). This makes Lanzarote the perfect year-round destination.
As with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote is Volcanic in origin. Due to the recent eruptions during the 18th and 19th Centuries, many parts of Lanzarote appear to be from another world, often described as 'lunar' or 'Martian'.
The dry climate (and lack of erosion) means that the Volcanic Landscape appears much as it did just after the eruptions.
Amongst the many stunning Volcanic features of Lanzarote is the longest Volcanic Tunnel in the world, the Atlantida Tunnel, which is over 7 km long and includes the La Cueva de los Verdes and Jameos del Agua.
Despite the Volcanic nature of the island, Lanzarote has several beautiful white beaches such as at Playa Blanca and Papagayo in the South and towards Orzola in the North.
Local authority regulations on the amount and style of development mean that there is no billboard advertising and no high rise buildings in Lanzarote (with the exception of the Gran Hotel in Arrecife).
Among the attractions of Arrecife are the bustling markets for local foods and crafts, the shopping area off Calle Leon y Castillo, the many pavement cafes and bars, a wonderful selection of restaurants and a number of museums.
Castillo de San José is the International Museum of Contemporary Art (MIAC) and situated overlooking the port, there is a bar and restaurant which you can visit separately as well as the art exhibitions. This 18th century castle is also often used for entertainment as a concert hall.
The Castillo de San Gabriel is situated in the centre, it is currently undergoing renovation and will re-open as the history museum for the capital. The impressive drawbridge is called the Puente de las bolas and was constructed in 1599 by engineer Leonardo Torriani as part of the city’s defense against pirate attacks. The name refers to the balls resting on top of the pillars.
Shopping in Arrecife is best on a Saturday morning when the market is on or in an evening, there’s a lovely atmosphere with pavement cafés, a mixture of shops from surf, designer, fashion, household, shoes and more.
For a bird’s eye view, head for the top floor of the Gran Hotel, the Skybar makes a fabulous coffee stop during a visit to the capital. The Gran Hotel is just across the road from the apartment.
Parque Islas Canarias is the one situated directly opposite the apartment and between the Gran Hotel and Casino Club Náutico, this open space has planted beds with sculptures and wooden decking including stone steps down to the sea. Opposite is the Islote de Fermina.
The Quiosco de la Música is a bandstand on the seafront in Arrecife. The one standing today is a replica built in the 1960’s. Currently home to a tourist information office.

"Great hosts, great location, great apartment!!!"
As we prefer the less commercial holiday locations, this proved to be ideal for our needs. Quiet but large beach within walking distance to our right, fabulous harbour view from the lounge window, town centre within walking distance to our left. Just perfect. Our hosts were very friendly and helpful. The beds were extremely comfortable and the main living room was tastfully furnished and practical for our needs. I would certainly recommend this venue. Well done Linda and Peter!!!
Thanks so much for the kind review George. Very pleased that you enjoyed your stay and the delights that Arrecife and Lanzarote has in store. Welcome back anytime!
