Description

Villa Amvrosia, Armeni, Crete

The newest Villa by the young owners of our very popular Villa Galania, Villa Amvrosia is a boutique style Villa with an up to date finish more in keeping with the sophisticated Cote dAzur than a Villa on the edge of a small, albeit charming, village in Western Crete and it is this very incongruity which makes it, for us at Freelance, who have a liking for the quirky, totally irresistible.

The hillside accommodation ranges over 3 floors with a *heated Jacuzzi pool on the lower level making an extravagant addition to the beautifully tiled L shaped swimming pool set into a deck at tree top level; which rather like the house that Jack built is also at ground floor level of the Villa. Beautifully furnished, the open plan living area, on the raised first floor, warmed out of season by an inset glass fronted fire, leads onto a large covered balcony with views of the pool and the dramatic White Mountains where the village ofStilos sits picturesquely

Beautifully furnished, the open plan living area, on the raised first floor, warmed out of season by an inset glass fronted fire, leads onto a large covered balcony with views of the pool and the dramatic White Mountains where the village ofStilos sits picturesquely on the lower slopes. The kitchen is equipped, as befits a Villa of this quality, with large fridge freezer, dishwasher, coffee maker and microwave and has a stable door to a small balcony that catches the morning sun. There is also a guest W.C. at this level.Stairs lead down to the lower ground floor and the aforementioned jacuzzzi pool where a door and poolside picture windows opening to a little shady copse of holme oak. Also at this level is the single bedroom with a generously wide single bed and a shower room with hydro massage shower. At the top of the Villa, the master double bedroom has a good run of wardrobes, a smart ensuite shower room and French doors to a covered balcony. A twin bedroom also has French doors to its own balcony and both bedrooms share a bathroom with a curved corner bath.

At the entrance to the delightful landscaped gardens, chiselled out of the stony Cretan hillside, a pretty aviary holds a pair of peacocks, who display their colours to a host of other small birds and along a stone path and past the entrance to the lower house level, a small copse makes a shady setting for a benched picnic area. Alongside the picnic area, a spacious covered outside kitchen/dining area has been constructed, with a barbecue, wood oven, fridge, and sink with running water. Steps from here lead up to the pool deck where the beautifully tiled L shaped pool is just a few further steps from the door into the living area.

*The indoor pool is heated during the cooler months only.

Location description from owner

The Chania Prefecture region

Western Crete & Chania

Still relatively uncommercialised and authentic, Western Crete & Chania just waits to be explored. Here, the magnificent White Mountains bestride the landscape and melted snow from their high slopes waters the fertile coastal plains, where orange, lemon and olive groves flourish and superb fruit and vegetables of every description grow in amazing profusion. This part of Crete also boasts some of the island best beaches, especially the coast west of Chania which is one 15 kilometre stretch of sandy beach broken by rocky outcrops and bustling villages with numerous waterside tavernas. Inland and virtually untouched by tourism, Crete rural life continues at the same slow pace as it has for centuries and the visitor who ventures off the beaten track will be suitably rewarded with fabulous scenery and a friendly welcome at every wayside watering hole

Whether you're looking for a little hideaway cottage of local stone, a magnificent modern villa with private pool, or perhaps a Chania harbour side hotel or apartment in a small seaside town, you'll find that Crete has them all in amazing disparate profusion. Once you take the plunge and opt for a holiday away from the massed rows of beach side hotels and apartments in more popular resorts, you might be agreeably surprised to discover just how easy it is to live in a more natural Mediterranean environment and how rewarding it can be to meet the locals on equal terms in the village bakery, butchers or wayside fruit stall. Without doubt you will also begin to understand the real meaning of filoxenia, the Greek word for hospitality to foreigners, still a way of life in rural Crete, where good Samaritans always stop to extend a helping hand and even the poorest shepherd will offer you a glass of fiery raki in the local cafenion by way of a welcome.

Still relatively refreshingly authentic our old favorite West Crete & Chania just waits to be explored. Here, the magnificent White Mountains bestride the landscape and melted snow from their high slopes waters the fertile coastal plains, where orange, lemon and olive groves flourish and superb fruit and vegetables of every description grow in amazing profusion. This part also boasts some of the island`s best beaches, especially the coast west which is one long 15km stretch of sandy beach broken by rocky outcrops and bustling villages with numerous waterside tavernas, virtually untouched by time or tourism.

Armeni

20km east of Chania with truly spectacular views of Crete's White Mountains, this idyllic little village of Douliana perched atop a hill overlooking Souda Bay is surrounded by olive groves and terraced farmland criss-crossed by drystone walls and ancient Byzantine donkey paths. There's a well stocked mini-market, taverna and a rustic little kafenion in the tiny village square and from here narrow little streets with whitewashed walls garlanded by flowers wend their way to the church. On the edge of the village you will also find a delightful little taverna serving authentic and very tasty Cretan fare. From here, a track bends its way down the hillside to the nearest beach, which is just under 3 km and a wonderful walk. For the less energetic the track is also navigable by car if you take it nice and slowly over the rough spots. For a good selection of tavernas and shops of all descriptions, Kalives 5km away is the best choice although Almirida 4km distance, also has some excellent tavernas and lovely sandy beaches.
