The Algarve region
The Algarve region stretches across the southern-most part of Portugal, covering about 100 miles from east to west and about 25 miles from north to south. Its beautiful coastline, incorporating 160km of sandy beaches, together with the dry sunny weather throughout most of the year, make the area a natural
choice for holiday-makers.
Some areas have changed immensely in recent years, responding to the influx of tourists with extensive development in tourist-based activities, while other areas have hardly changed at all. This gives the Algarve a unique mix of old and new and offers something for everyone.
For those who like to get away from it all, there are still long stretches of golden sand which remain undiscovered by the package-tour companies, and many quiet bays to explore. There are also tiny picturesque villages which retain the character and charm of "old" Portugal and the rich Moorish heritage of
the region can often be seen in the buildings - in the whitewashed villas, the chimneys etc.
The climate is perfect for most outdoor activities - eg walking, sightseeing and cycling - and the facilities available for sporting activities are top-class. For golfers, there are something like 37 courses across the Algarve (and indeed the region is widely considered one of Europe's most important golf centres), while for sailors, there are a number of excellent marinas (eg at Vilamoura, Lagos and Portimao). For watersports, too, conditions are ideal and there are numerous centres along the coast offering opportunities for diving, surfing, windsurfing, kitesurfing, game fishing etc.
Other attractions include water parks, a theme park and zoo, boat trips along the coast (with dinghy rides into the caves and some offering the prospect of seeing dolphins), crazy golf, karting, horse-riding and much more.
Armacao de Pera
The glorious sandy beach which stretches from Armacao de Pera to Gale, about two miles to the east, is one of the best in the Algarve and the town is well-established as a popular all-year round holiday destination.
Originally a tiny fishing village, it has grown in recent years through tourism, but the town has managed to neatly blend the new with the old and the eastern part of the town in particular retains much of its original character and charm. Fishing is still an important part of the town's economy - and, every morning, the brightly painted boats of the local fishermen make a colourful scene as they bring home the day's "catch" to the Praia dos Pescadores (Fishermen's Beach).
Not surprisingly, therefore, the town has a number of excellent fish restaurants - taking great pride in serving locally-caught fish of the highest quality.
If you're planning a relaxing, chilled out holiday, the beaches, the sunshine and the splendid variety of places to eat and drink all make Armacao de Pera a perfect place to stay.
However, the town is also ideally located to enable visitors to sample the delights of all that the region has to offer - its splendid sporting facilities, its wonderful wildlife, its rich history and culture etc. So, Armacao de Pera is the perfect base for a more active holiday too.
Nearby attractions (all within 5 km) include :-
- "Zoomarine" at Guia - with spectacular presentations featuring dolphins, sea-lions, birds of prey and offering (for an additional charge) an opportunity to swim with dolphins
- "Aqualand" at Alcantarilha - giant waterpark with flumes and slides etc
- "Slide & Splash" at Lagoa - another (even bigger) waterpark with particularly good facilities for younger children
- Bird sanctuary adjacent to the Salgados golf course to the east of Fishermen's Beach - where the sand dunes, marshes and natural lagoon provide the perfect habitat for a variety of water fowl and other birds (including flamingos at certain times of the year)
- Golf courses - those in the immediate vicinity include 2 recently opened courses, one designed by Nick Faldo and the other by Christy O'Connor junior
- Sand Sculptures at Pera - each year the International Festival of Sand Sculptures is dedicated to a particular theme and brings together 35 sculptors from around the world to create a show that has become the greatest exhibition of sand sculptures in the world
- Algarve Shopping Centre at Guia - while Armacao de Pera has a good variety of shops for most everyday needs, for those requiring a more concentrated dose of retail therapy, the Algarve Shopping Centre is a giant shopping and entertainment complex. It features many of the most popular high-street and designer shops, a hypermarket, a multi-screen cinema and a 12-lane bowling alley.

"A fantastic place to spend the month of February!"
Prior to our departure the owner Wendy was very helpful and prompt at answering any queries that we had. It was obvious that she really wanted us to enjoy our holiday. On arrival we were met by the smiling Karon from Tophats who showed us around the apartment and explained how everything worked. We appreciated the welcome pack as it was late at night and obviously all shops were shut. We found the apartment to be immaculately clean and extreemly well equipped. The outside terrace was great for sunbathing even in February. We will definitely be going back next year. I can honestly say it was the best holiday let we have ever had.

"Lovely time in Armacao de Pera"
This was our second time at this apartment and we thoroughly enjoyed it. Apartment has everything you need and is really like a home from home. The owner Wendy is friendly and helpful and the welcome pack when you arrive is a nice thought. The pool is nice although absolutely freezing!! Only a 5 minute walk to beach and centre of Armacao de Pera which is very relaxing but still with plenty of restaurants and things to do. Hope to come back every year!

"A great holiday"
What a great time we had in Armacao de Pera. We were greeted with a welcome pack when we arrived at the apartment late at night- no need to go to the shop in the morning to get milk and cereal. Lovely touch. The accomodation was spotless, and we made great use of the balcony and the roof top pool. The pool was a bit small and a bit of a squeeze when others are there. Great fish market on the back street, and plenty of restaurants. We would both love to go back some time soon. The owner Wendy was very helpful, and quick to help out with any queries. Anthony & Christine.
