Location description from owner

The Scotland region

Oban is the largest port in the West of Scotland and the main ferry terminus for the Hebrides. Ferries from Oban serve Mull and many of the inner Hebridean islands as well as Barra and South Uist in the Western Isles.

The town is famed for its fabulous views, the ocean promenade, island vistas, amazing sunsets, ancient monuments and castles and outdoor activities such as diving, hiking, fishing, bird-watching even whale spotting.

Oban (meaning 'little bay' in Gaelic) has a population of approximately 8,500 and is known as 'The Gateway to the Isles'. It originally existed as a small fishing and trading village until the steamers of the late Victorian era started arriving in greater numbers. The arrival of the railway in 1880 confirmed its growing status. The most outstanding feature in Oban is McCaig's Tower which is also known as McCaig's Folly. This was built in 1897 to provide work for local stone masons and provide a lasting monument to the McCaig Family. The original intention was to complete it with a large tower placed in the middle but this, like the intended statues of the McCaig family, never materialised.

When Queen Victoria paid a visit to the town in the late 18th century she gave it the royal seal of approval by describing it as "one of the finest spots we have seen".

Argyll

Fishing
There is a small rowing boat (March - October) which can be launched from the slipway directly in front of the house ensuring the occupants of Fearnach Bay House a swift and easy departure to catch their next meal from the loch. Lifejackets, fishing rods and tackle are all supplied at no extra charge.

In addition to inland sea fishing there is also complementary trout fishing on two of the estate lochs and fishing on a further 12 lochs in the vicinity is available on purchase of a permit obtainable at the local Post Office.

Golf:
The world renowned championship course at Machrihanish is about 1 ½ hrs spectacular drive south to the Mull of Kintyre and there are 2 courses closer to home: the challenging 18 hole course at Oban and the 9 hole course on Seil Island. Both are within ½ hour's drive away.

Ponies:
Enjoy gentle treks through forest tracks and along scenic coastlines at Lunga Riding Stables. Only a 15 minute drive away, there is an outdoor arena for practicing, children are made very welcome and there are pub rides for the grown ups.

Boat Trips:
A particularly exciting excursion is a fast boat ride through the Corryvreckan whirlpool which is the third largest whirlpool in the world and is situated between two islands not far from Loch Melfort. Regular sightings of grey seal, golden eagles and red deer on deserted neighbouring islands.

Gardens:
Argyll has some of the most spectacular and interesting gardens to be found in Scotland. Arduaine Gardens are close by and well worth a visit at any time of the year but especially in spring and early summer.

Ferry Routes:
A 30 minute drive takes you to the bustling ferry port of Oban, making the house ideally located for day trips and visits to the nearby islands of Mull and Iona and also Staffa and Fingal's Cave.

“Total luxury and relaxation”

Reviewed 2 Apr 2016

This was our second visit to beautiful house and we are totally in love with both it and its location. The owners have decorated and equipped it to an extremely high standard and there was a lovely bottle of wine and some homemade chocolate brownies waiting on the table when we arrived. Fresh flowers, crisp linen, spotlessly clean, lovely log burner with plenty of logs and fully equipped kitchen make this a home from from home. The views, walks and fishing are spectacular and we can't wait to come back again. Recent work on the water meant limited hot water the first night but the owners sent a local plumber out the next day - still needs a little work so that two baths can be run but am confident this will be fixed!

“Wonderful house, perfect location !”

Reviewed 31 Jul 2014

The house is beautifully and very comfortably furnished. The owners went beyond what you would normally expect to make us feel welcome and to help with anything that we needed . The views of the loch from every window are stunning. We would love to return to Fearnach Bay house in the future. Would recommend without hesitation.

“Fab, Fab, Fab !”

Reviewed 13 Jul 2012

I am not normally one for writing reviews but our stay at Fearnach Bay was so enjoyable, I feel that I should. The house was everything we hoped it would be and more, it was such a relaxing comfortable house to stay in with every detail carefully thought out and planned. The soft furnishings, linen etc are all to a high standard which made for a very relaxing weeks break. The location of the property is also just perfect, my familys best highlight was going out in the little red rowing boat, we had tremendous fun and caught lots of fish. We also went walking, cycling - everything you need really for a summer holiday. I would definitely recommend Fearnach Bay House to my friends and family and hope to return very soon.

“5 Star property in a 5 star location”

Reviewed 23 Apr 2012

This was our 2nd visit to Fearnach Bay House as a family (2 children 8 & 6) and we can't wait to return! - It is a modern, stylish well equipped property in a beautiful quiet loch side location on the west coast of Scotland. The house is truly 5 star including under floor heating, flat screen TV, wood burning stove and plentiful supply of logs, modern well equipped kitchen and open plan living all decorated to a very high standard. The location is truly special too, set at the side of the loch, complete with its own rowing boat, lots of mountains and tracks to explore on your doorstep and access to a number of lochs to fish in. Finally the exacting service (including catering if you want it) and high quality standards offered by the owners is second to none. Fully recommended.

“This is a beautiful place to stay!”

Reviewed 3 Nov 2011

Fearnach Bay House is absolutely wonderful. It is even better than the pictures on their website. It is incredibly well equipped. Probably the best equipped rental house I have ever stayed in. Beautiful location, Great view, Very helpful and thoughtful owners. Lots of space in the house - a great house to share with friends/family. The window seat was my favourite place in the house. Jump at the chance to stay there!
