The Poitou-Charentes region
The Deux-Sevre region is the second sunniest in France. It is a peaceful location with rolling countryside and many places to visit that are fantastic for adults, children, couples and lovers of fresh air - vineyards, chateaux, oriental park, peaceful villages, markets, etc. The area offers plenty of local attractions (Puy de Fou, Futuroscope, the fabulous Zoo, Troglodyte Village, Parc de la Vallee, Ostrich Farm and Maze, Vallee de Singes, etc) and some lively activities (rock climbing, walking, canoeing, mountain and trial biking, horse-riding, Karting), or more tranquil ones (local parks, walks, vineyards, swimming pool, lakes, cinemas, market towns, etc.)
Le Breuil and the chemins.
The local farm tracks (chemins) are great if you like to walk or ride bikes. There is very little traffic except for farm vehicles and the locals. Often you will meet fellow walkers and cyclists. From our farm one chemin will take you to the main Thouars road, another is a nice flat 2k walk or ride to the next farms and the third is a pleasant, meandering, 10 minute walk down to Le Breuil. This is a typical sleepy village with a church, Mairie, the obligatory hairdressers and the bar/restaurant. The bar is the centre of village life with people dropping in and out for a coffee, wine, beer, or just to pass the time of day with the owners, Harry and Marie. As usual with most restaurants they have a lunchtime “menu” (set meal) with starter, plat de jour, desert, coffee and wine included. This attracts the local artisans and is good, well cooked food and great value. The bar is open most days.
Although generally they do not serve food in the evenings, they will be happy to provide an evening meal if given three or four days notice. Let us know and we can arrange it for you.
Beyond Le Breuil there are pleasant walks down to the river Argenton and across to the Passeralle d’ Auzay.
Argenton les Vallees
Just outside the village on the main road is a petrol station with bar, of course. At the petrol station you have a choice of continuing on into Argenton or turning right onto a small road that winds down to the lake. This is a really nice walk, ride or drive and as you cross a bridge over the lake you will find the Restaurant du Lac. You can sit overlooking the lake and have drink or a three course meal. They are open in the evenings in summer.
There is also a small beach and childrens playground . After going past the restaurant the road climbs back up the valley, passing the swimming pool which is great for kids and then on into Argenton les Vallees where it joins the main road. Argenton was previously called Argenton le Chateau after the chateau that used to stand on the promontory. Sadly, the Chateau is no longer there and name was changed a few years ago when the commune of Argenton le Chateau expanded to incorporate two nearby communes. Argenton is a typical, quiet French town that comes to life with the many fetes that are held throughout the year and especially in the summer. It has the usual buildings associated with French bureaucracy in the centre of the town as well as estate agents, notaire and tourist offices and various types of commerce dotted around. You will also find banks, a bar/restaurant, bread shop, large supermarket, pharmacy, hairdressers, doctors, dentists and petrol station.
Between 10 and 20 minutes drive away you will find the larger towns of Nueil-Les Aubiers, Thouars and Bressuire with typical shopping areas - hypermarket, clothes shops, DIY shops and garden centres etc). Bressuire is the best town to visit if you are looking for more activities (bars, restaurants) in the evenings. Plan to visit a restaurant between 7 and 8pm as you find they stop taking orders after 9pm. It also may be wise to book.
Alpacas generally are timid creatures and their natural defence is flight. They are much like cats in their nature as they are curious about everything, like attention, but will decide when they want to go somewhere else. Alpacas are all different and have their own personalities. Some are shyer than others and will abide by the pecking order within the herd. Some are just really friendly and will come up to you for you to touch them.

My husband and two young teenagers stayed at the Alpaca farm in August 2012. It was fabulous - the accommodation was a really decent size, very clean and modern bathroom and kitchen with the added touch of a typical french wooden staircase. Could not ask for more and the owners, who are only next door, were lovely and gave us a tour of their farm and made us very welcome. The area is quiet but very french and we enjoyed the local fetes and the bar in the village made us very welcome. Plenty to do and see in the area - the Puy du Fou is a must and only 40 minutes away. Will definitely go back.

"Great way to finish the holiday"
The house is fantastic with all mod cons and the added bonus of alpacas, chickens, frogs and a goose in the back garden. Everything is in perfect condition and presented beautifully when you arrive, Kit and Tony are as helpful as you require and also unobtrusive despite living and working next door. We thoroughly enjoyed our week with trips out to the bar down the road and the lake in the nearby Argenton. La Rochelle and Ile de Re are within reach for a seaside day out if you want to leave the tranquil garden and venture out into the world. The tour is not to be missed and the kids loved the alpacas (so did the adults). A fantastic way to relax for the last week of our little tour. I recommend this gite to all those wanting a relaxing time in real rural France.
