Location description from owner

The Lake Como region

The Lake Como region

Lake Como has been famous and popular for centuries, due to its unrivaled beauty. It is still popular today for many more reasons: It is within striking distance of many interesting places - Milan, Monza, St Moritz and Lugano, to name just a few. It offers something for every type of holidaymaker from the sporty to chill-out to culture-vulture with water sports, golf, horse-riding, stunning villas and historic churches, shopping to die for (ask for our designer outlet guide), wine tastings, gourmet restaurants and some of the best pizzas you will ever taste at only €4 for a pizza margherita, you can't go wrong! It is also home to the island of Comacina and one of the most famous restaurants on the Lake, visited by everyone from Eisenhower to Clooney.

Argegno

Argegno

Argegno, 20km from Como

A popular destination for tourists, Argegno is situated in a large inlet on the western shore of Lake Como at the mouth of the Val d’Intelvi. It has a pleasant climate and is mild even in the winter months. With its’ beautiful panoramic location, one can see from the headland of Bellagio to the north and as far as Nesso towards the south.

Argegno offers a surprising amount of facilities for a quaint lakeside fishing village – 5 good restaurants/pizzerias, 2 excellent wine bars (Enoteca and Bar Colombo), serving free snacks at aperitivo time every day. There are 2 banks with cash points and a small store. And you won’t be able to resist Andrea’s home-made ice creams (made with whatever is available fresh that day, including cucumber!). The scent of the bakery will draw you up the narrow alleyways to find fresh brioche (croissants) and bread, baked daily on the premises by Louisa. Buy fresh vegetables from Mario and ask him for one of his superb recipes – always served with smile and he speaks excellent English. If that wasn’t enough, the village also now boasts a beautician and 2 hairdressers!

Argegno is also within striking distance of all Lake Como’s treasures, as it is a main bus and ferry stop-off point for the rest of the lake. Villa Balbianello (Star Wars & James Bond) is just around the corner, Villa Carlotta a short ferry ride away, as are Bellagio, Menaggio and Varenna – get a centre lake ticket and visit all three in one day. The village is certainly of Roman origin, as it owes its’ name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene. At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as the ancient villa of Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. The village is certainly of Roman origin, as it owes its’ name to the consul Publio Cesio Archigene.

At one time Argegno was part of a defensive system, which extended as far as Lenno and the Isola Comacina to obstruct the passage of invaders. The ancient centre of the village is very picturesque. It is crossed by the Telo stream and is divided into two parts, which are joined by an old stone bridge with a lancet arch.

It is possible to take a cable car up to Pigra (881 m), which is situated on a plateau with a beautiful view of the lake. From here it is possible to go on to the Valle della Camoggia, which is in the oasis of Argegno-Cima della Duaria, a conservation area. The road which runs along Val d’Intelvi also starts from Argegno and about 15 km along it one comes to Lanzo.

Things to see

The Sanctuary of Sant’Anna

This was built in the seventeenth century but it was subsequently renovated. Inside one can find stuccowork and frescoes from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The Oratory of San Rocco in Pigra

Built in the fifteenth century, it contains frescoes from 1662 signed by S. Pozzi.

“Fabulous”

We had a wonderful 10 days at Liberty Villa. The house is stunning as are the grounds and brand new swimming pool. The house has everything you need for a relaxing stay, all the mod cons! The villa is a short walk into Argegno but please be aware that the walk back is quite steep. The restaurants in Argegno are great and are our favourite around Lake Como. We had two fantastic meals at La Brea, which is about a 5 minute walk up the hill. Please make sure you walk on the track to the side of the villa and not on the road as it is too dangerous. Lake Como Properties very kindly booked La Brea for us on the first night so we didn't have to worry about where to go to eat after a long journey. Make sure you visit Zoe's Ice Cream Parlour in Argegno as it is rated amongst the best on the Lake and we can confirm this! There is so much to do: We hired a boat for a couple of days from Thomas Turatti opposite the Funivia Station. They were so helpful and the boats were immaculate - they even gave the children sweets every time they saw them! We took the cable car to Pigra and took boats from Argegno to Bellagio, Menaggio, Tremezzo and Lenno. If you have children and only want to visit one Villa go to Villa Balbianello as this is where a Star Wars and James Bond film was filmed. If you want to go shopping go to Como Town as it is very pretty with winding streets. All in all a fabulous holiday; we even stayed an extra two nights!

Thank you for taking the time to review Villa Marzia - I am so pleased that you all had such a great time. Your tips for others are really useful as well - thank you!

A fabulous large villa, about 100years old, but recent tasteful refurbishment, New pool and lovely grounds. Lovely views all around, including the lake. Only 10 mins drive from the quaint and lively village of Argegno, or a healthy walk along the ancient mule track.. Liked it so much we have already booked it for next yeaqr.

Thank you so much for taking the time to review Villa Marzia. I am so glad that you loved it and we look forward to welcoming you back next year.
