Location description from owner

The Caithness and Sutherland region

There is plenty to see and do in this beautiful area. From mountains and glens, rivers and lochs, burns and waterfalls, beaches and forests, castles and distilleries. There are activities for all, including mountain biking, walking, golf, horse riding, fishing, bird watching, seal spotting or just sitting watching the weather go by!

Ardgay

While Sutherland's West coast is justly famous for its breathtaking mountain scenery and traditional crofting lifestyle, the East coast is increasingly well known for some of the best links courses in the world. Golf courses at Golspie, Brora and Tain, the Championship course at Royal Dornoch as well as smaller courses at Helmsdale and Bonar Bridge. These offer golfers of all abilities an astonishing range of challenges.

Great places to visit include Dunrobin Castle, the cathedral at the Royal Burgh of Dornoch, Glenmorangie and Clynelish whisky distilleries, Royal Dornoch Golf Club, the late Queen Mother's home Castle of Mey, the Falls of Shin where you can see wild salmon leaping up great waterfalls, Smoo Cave at Durness, and of course you can stand at the top of Britain at John O'Groats.

A day out on the Black Isle can include a trip to the Wildlife Park or the local brewery. Try quad biking or paint-balling or take a boat trip dolphin and seal spotting.

The thriving city of Inverness is crowned by a pink crenellated castle, and lavishly decorated with flowers. There are plenty of shops, places to eat and drink, peaceful areas close to the centre for relaxing. Chill out by the river at lovely Ness Islands or shop for something tartan to take home. The city itself is small, compact and easy to get around.

“Fantastic cottage in beautiful and tranquil setting”

Reviewed 27 Feb 2013

The cottage is lovely, and in a fantastic rural location with amazing views. On arrival we found a tasty and welcoming homemade cake and the owners had made sure everything was ready for us, including popping the heating on before we got there. The cottage was extremely warm and cosy despite the cold weather, and although we used the lovely wood burning fire for ambience, we didn't really need it for the heat. The cottage was spotless and very homely, with everything you could need. The beds were amazingly comfy - better than my bed at home! We had some amazing trips out, the local scenery is breathtaking and there are so many places to walk nearby, within a short drive also taking in waterfalls and deserted beaches. The owners are very helpful.
