Further details

Madalena do Mar is a small village located on the southwest coast of the island with beautiful sea and cliff views. Its name came from the legendary Polish Prince of the 15th century, Henry Allemão. He lost a battle in 1444 and was given land by João Gonçalves Zarco and established a great-populated farm where he built a chapel and dedicated to the Saint Mary Madeleine.

It is a characteristic fishing village with a beautiful promenade along the pebble beach. Its location and accompanying climate has helped it to establish the biggest banana plantations on the island.

There are several restaurants for lazy lunches or evenings out.

Calheta with its man-made golden beaches is popular with tourists and locals alike. There is a beautiful marina and a good choice of bars and restaurants. There is a handful of boutique shops and a good supermarket.

Calheta is famous for producing the best whit rum 'Aguadente', a special ingredient of the typical Madeiran drink 'Poncha'. If you are interested in knowing how the white rum is made, we recommend a tour of the 'Engenho da Calheta' the rum distillery where you can wander around and sample the produce.

Centro das Artes Casa da Mudas is a new centre located at the edge of a cliff overlooking the sea and was built to host superb art exhibitions, musical performances and other events.

«All in all a great experience» Mayo - 18/08/2012

Just a note to thank you and the whole team there for making our holiday really lovely. The organisation and communication had been clear and appropriate, the property great being very well kept and clean.

Mr Acácio was exceptionally helpful and available which made a big positive difference. All in all a great experience and we may wish to return some time.

«Would recommend it to anyone» - Liebmann - 04/08/2012

We had a wonderful stay at Villa Beach View and thought the villa was both beautiful and peaceful. No complaints at all. Just what we needed and everyone was very friendly and helpful.

We were very happy with our holiday and would recommend it to anyone!

The Madeira Islands region

Travel: Airport at 35 minutes. Coach tours. Because Madeira is a relatively small island a rented car makes the 2 Madalena twin villas a good base also for sightseeing.
Entertainment: Madalena do Mar restaurant is one of the best sea front restaurant in Madeira Island! As well Calheta beach restaurants are very good.
Attractions: the houses provided a good base from which to tootle off and explore nearby villages and towns, walking during the day along Madeira's fantastic levedas and whiled away the afternoons in the secluded garden suntrap surrounded by banana trees.had double aspect views of the sea and the mountain and was filled with sunshine for morning cup of tea in bed.
Other Activities: boat trips, volley ball court, etc..

Arco da Calheta

Arco da Calheta is considered the island's warmest area, where the sun shines for longest. Arco da Calheta is also, known for its traditional fishermen's district and its lovely promenade by the beach running from one end of the village to the other.
