Location description from owner

The Brittany region

A wonderful area for a sightseeing holiday with so much to do! We are about 35 minutes from the lovely beaches at St Malo and Dinard, less than that from Mont st Michel and Fougeres, also near medieval Dinan on the river Rance, Combourg with its castle and the shops and markets of Rennes. The D Day landing beaches and Bayeux are an easy day trip. The foret de Villecartier only a kilometre away, has lakeside walks, boat trips, pony rides, children's activities and a treetop assault course. There are two fine golf courses within a short distance; canoeing and fishing are also available.

Antrain

Antrain is a small market town just over a kilometre away, with a supermarket, post office, boulangeries, pharmacies, banks, bars and some other shops. La Fontenelle is closer but smaller and has a combined bar/restaurant with its own boulangerie. La Fontenelle holds an annual musical festival for the friends of Jean Langlais. There are several attractive chateaux close by, and two fine indoor swimming pools as well as a lakeside beach and boating at the Etang de Boulet.

“Peace and tranquility in the heart of Normandy”

Reviewed 21 Jun 2015

Firstly, my family and I were quite awestruck by the amount of space in this gite. No "bijou cottage" this, it's on quite a grand scale with a massive communal sitting room overlooked by a “mistrels’ gallery” (in the regional style of the long farmhouse, or La Longère, apparently). It feels as if it's in the middle of nowhere. Well okay, it IS in the middle of nowhere, but a pleasant 15 minute walk takes you to the nearest village of La Fontanelle, a pretty, sleepy little place, with a shop or two and a very nice bar/restaurant where we had an inexpensive yet wholesome lunch on our first day. If you want “sights”, you have to get in the car, but there’s quite a choice within easy reach, not least the world heritage site of Le Mont St Michel (you can beat the crowds from such a nearby base). Less well known but almost as impressive is Fougères with its massive fortifications. We enjoyed the local towns of Pont Orson and Combourg, both of which have lively markets. We spent our final day at Dinan, a vibrant fishing port that oozes charm. Highly recommended.
