The Tuscany region

Anghiari, in Southern Tuscany, offers access to many of the major sights in Tuscany and Umbria. Both the art and architecture of Florence and Siena, the latter with its dramatic Palio festival, are within easy reach. Assisi, the birthplace of St Francis, and the medieval magnificence of Perugia are equally accessible.

Anghiari

Anghiari is surrounded by fertile land embracing the Tiber and Arno rivers. Dating from the 14th Century the town walls have provided strong protection from the historical events in its long history. Celebrated by the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, the Battle of Anghiari in 1440 established Anghiari's allegiance to Florentine culture. The Battle is commemorated every June 29th with the picturesque Palio della Vittoria in the town square.

The area is rich in art. One of Italy's leading painters, Piero della Francesca, was born in nearby Sansepolcro, and his work can be seen there, as well as in Monterchi and in the historic city of Arezzo with its splendid cathedral.

The green countryside around Anghiari offers stimulating walking with outstanding views, after which appetites can be well satisfied by one of the town's local restaurants.

Music plays a large part in life in Anghiari and there are concerts throughout the year. The Southbank Sinfonia from London come every year and produce a spectacular programme in the town. A highlight is the "Progressivo", a tour of the town's medieval quarters, with concerts in various areas. Anghiari also has a weekly market, and there are food fairs in the area where local produce can be sampled and enjoyed. Nearby Arezzo hosts a monthly Antiques Fair, one of the best known in Italy.
