As you come in through the main door of the house you will find a door to the right that leads to a large kitchen/diner and living room. An original fireplace makes a welcoming feature for winter breaks and there are 2 large dining tables to choose from. This is a room with great character and charm. Opposite this room is the beautiful light and airy bedroom with 3 single beds, spacious enough to have its own seating area. Further along the hallway are a further 2 bedrooms, the master bedroom with en suite bathroom and a twin room. The bathroom servicing the triple and twin bedrooms is just along the hallway mid way between the two rooms.

A stone staircase leads up from the hallway to another 2 bedrooms, one with a double bed and the other with a bed that can extend to double size if required. The bathroom on this floor has a bath with shower attachment. All the beds are made up with cotton sheets and bedcovers by Busatti, a local firm that makes luxury linens that are sold worldwide in boutiques and stores.

For larger groups, there is the option of renting the first floor apartment that is opposite the main house. It has 2 twin bedrooms, a bathroom and a living room with a kitchen and dining area. The sofa bed in the living room could allow an additional 2 people to sleep there if required.

In addition to the spacious main house there is a games room with a beautiful wood beamed veranda in front overlooking the lane and the fields beyond. Originally a stable with the original, restored feeding troughs still in place, the games room has table tennis, table football and a card table plus a wooden rocking horse for younger guests. There is also a kitchenette with a wine fridge, dining table and seating area. Guests always comment on how well this space works in all weather. In summer, adults have enjoyed sitting on the veranda while the children play inside. It is also a super rainy day option with the veranda providing a sheltered outdoor space to let off steam.

Just round the corner from the games room, the pig sties have been cleverly converted into an additional bathroom and small gym area with a selection of equipment that the owner is happy for guests to use.

The private swimming pool has its own water slide, a popular feature with both young and older guests! There are poolside sunbeds and umbrellas for relaxing in this great spot and plenty of space for large groups to enjoy the Tuscan sun. Next to the swimming pool is a shower and a hot tub with Jacuzzi settings to ensure total relaxation!

There is a large, lawned area between the main house and swimming pool that is perfect for outside dining and ball games. For guests who are interested, the owner has an archery set that he is happy for guests to try. Just behind the hot tub area is a picnic area, shaded by trees. There is a hammock, chair swing and picnic table - a perfect spot for reading or an afternoon nap.

Behind the swimming pool, hidden by the trees is a bowling lane suitable for outdoor Italian bowls or 'bocce' as it is known in Italy – great fun for all the family. Beyond this, the landscaped garden ends and leads into an area of natural beauty has an almost fairy grotto quality to it. There is a pond full of goldfish and lily pads with benches nearby where you can sit and enjoy the peace. Deer has been regularly sighted here and wild boar leave their tracks at night. Trees and plants encase the grove making it a truly magical addition to this already amazing property.

Of course you are in Tuscany, surrounded by stunning places to visit, amazing food to eat, wine to taste but be warned, once you arrive at Il Merendello you will find it hard to tear yourself away.

Please note that our check in time is 4-7pm on your day of arrival. For late check ins there is an additional fee payable upon arrival. 7-9pm €40. 9pm-midnight €80. For Sunday check ins there is an additional €80 fee to pay on arrival.

Location description from owner

The Tuscany region

Tuscany is known for its beautiful landscapes, its rich artistic legacy and vast influence on high culture. Tuscany is widely regarded as the true birthplace of the Italian Renaissance, and has been home to some of the most influential people in history, such as Petrarch, Dante, Botticelli, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Galileo Galilei, Amerigo Vespucci and Puccini. Due to this, the region has several museums, most of which (such as the Uffizi and the Pitti Palace) are found in Florence, but others in towns and smaller villages. Tuscany has a unique culinary tradition, and is famous for its wines (most famous of which are Chianti, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino). The summers in Tuscany are hot, usually without much rain. Spring (April and May) and Autumn (October and November) are dry, sunny days but the chances of rain are higher. The Winter has sunny, mild days and it can get very cold at night particularly in the hilly areas. As expected July is the hottest month with temperatures ranging from 23°C up to 30°C; January is the coldest month with about 7°C at the coast and about 3.5°C to 5.5°C inland. The busiest time in Tuscany (and Italy generally) is August when the Italians are on holiday. The main tourist season stretches from mid-April to the end of September.

Anghiari

The Anghiari area
Anghiari is considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. The town has preserved its medieval roots beautifully and hosts many local festivals throughout the year celebrating its heritage and the local culture and cuisine. There are several pizza restaurants here including an outdoor one with a children's play area as well as some superb traditional Tuscan restaurants.

Sansepolcro is a few kilometers away and is famed for being home to the painting of the Resurrection by Peiro della Francesca which can be seen at the Museo Civico along with several other important pieces of art. For those with children to entertain, there is a large swimming pool in the town with water slides and diving boards as well as shaded picnic areas and a children's play area.

Arezzo is a 30 minute drive from the house. It has a main train station with lines to Florence and Rome. It is a beautiful town that hosts a jousting contest every year that draws crowds from all over Tuscany and beyond. On the first weekend of every month there is an antiques fair that fills every street of the old part of the town.

Other beautiful places to visit that are easily reached for a day trip include; Siena, Assisi, Cortona, Florence. From our office in Anghiari we are happy to organize wine tasting and depending on the time of year, olive picking to produce your own oil to take home.

“A great holiday experience in a wonderful location within a superb community”

Reviewed 29 Sep 2014

We booked our stay at Il Merendello Anghiari,Tuesday for a very special holiday and it more than lived up to our expectations despite the weather. Our hosts Tracey and PierreLuigi were brilliant and always on hand to assist. Nothing was too much trouble. The house had everything we needed and provided a peaceful retreat after our trips to Rome, Florence and Assisi. Highly recommended
