Description

Shakespeare Lodge is a charming self-contained unit with an additional studio. The ensemble is part of a typical farmhouse construction in Anjou, located 250 kms southwest of Paris and 30 kms north of the historic city of Angers. The renovation has been carried out to maximize comfort and warmth while retaining many original features. Your hosts live in the eastern barn wing of the house, however your privacy is ensured by a separate entrance and courtyard for outdoor relaxation. The property is perfect for golfers, with Anjou Garden Golf right next door (3kms), for visits to the renown Lion d'Angers equestrian events and of course, for use as a base from which to visit local castles and gardens as well as those further afield in the Loire valley. English spoken.

Location description from owner

The Pays de la Loire region

"The Loire Valley is an outstanding cultural landscape along a major river which bears witness to an interchange of human values and to a harmonious development of interactions between human beings and their environment over two millennia" (Unesco.org). The World Heritage area stretches from Orleans in the east through to Chalonnes-sur-Loire. It includes the cities of Angers (30 mins drive south of Shakespeare Lodge and Saumur, (one hour south east of the lodge) both of which are known for their castles and monuments. Our area is known as "les trois rivières" or the three rivers, the Loir, the Sarthe and the Mayenne, all of which eventually drain into the Loire. It is a predominantly unspoilt, rural district.

Angers

Shakespeare Lodge, built in 1845, is right next door to Anjou Garden Golf. The area includes a number of historic family-run castles such as the incredible Plessis-Bourré which was completed in five years by Louis the eleventh's finance minister. It's just five minutes drive away. The Chateau of Montriou, 10 minutes drive in the opposite direction, is known for its fabulous autumn garden full of gourds. Tallest in France, the Brissac castle is 45 minutes drive to the south, across the Loire and into wine-growing country. In the city of Angers, which is 30 minutes directly south, the 13th century fortress of Angers stands as a breath-taking example of military architecture. Commissioned by St Louis, the fort houses the largest narrative tapestry in France "the Apocalypse". Closer to the lodge, the village of Cheffes is linked during July and August to Angers by a river boat service. Day trips on the rivers can also be organised from the nearby villages of Chenillé Change and Chateauneuf. For golfers, Anjou Garden Golf is literally 3 minutes door to door. Bicycles are available. In October, the town of Lion d'Angers hosts the annual "Mondial de Lion" international equestrian competition while also of note is the national heritage weekend in September when visits to all listed properties are free.

“Beautiful, secluded gite in the French countryside”

Reviewed 30 Aug 2015

This is probably the best gite we have ever stayed in. Beautifully furnished and in a lovely, peaceful setting, but not far from local amenities. It is an ideal base to explore the local chateaux, vineyards and waterways in this part of the Loire Valley. Ann-Louise was extremely helpful and provided us with lots of local information. We would definitely recommend this gite and hope to go back ourselves in the future.

“Relaxing, quiet and beautiful.”

Beautiful house set in the heart of the countryside. Ann-Louise and Francois were very welcoming and have thought of everything one could need on holiday, the house is so well equipped. We enjoy amazing peace and quiet and would recommend this gite absolutely.

“Excellent Stay”

Reviewed 4 Jul 2015

2nd time visiting Shakespeare Lodge and yet again we were not disappointed. Would highly recommend for anyone who wants a well equipped, spacious property with use of a private pool in a quiet location.
