The Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region
Essaouira is a charming ancient medina (walled town), with a 3 mile beach, portuguese ramparts and small picturesque working fishing port and bustling medina.
There are no cars allowed inside the medina and it has a very relaxed hassle free atmosphere. It is a UNESCO world heritage site and was the town were Jimi Hendrix used to hang out and where scenes were filmed from Ridley Scott's 'The Kingdome of Heaven'.
The climate is temperate and rarely gets above mid 30's.
Essaouira has many mysterious and interesting streets in the old medina to explore. You will find souks selling crafts, clothes and spices and many craft shops selling an abundance or colourful traditional items. The restaurants offer a variety of moroccan, French and Italian cuisine, the busy little port with it's blue fishing boats bringing in the daily catch and the historic ramparts overlooking the sea. It has a long sandy beach, and there are many activities available in the area, wind surfing and tuition, walking, cycling, quad bikes, camel and horse riding, body boarding and wind buggy, swimming pools use in local hotels (there is a daily charge),or visit the hamman.
Car hire is available if you wish to explorer further.

"A small beautiful palace with great chartacter in the heart of the medina"
Friends persuaded us that this would be a great place to pass what would otherwise have been for us the heart of the Polish winter. The house is distinguished by its tiles and arches and light. It seems to have been put together with affection and skill. It has two kitchens, three bedrooms and ample living space on various levels, including two terraces, from one of which you can see the sea. We had a wonderful time there and hope to return. The inside has space, beauty and serenity and you have only to walk out the door to be entertained and enthralled by the constantly changing scenes in the street. This is the small, beautiful city where Orson Welles came to film "Othello" and Jimi Hendrix had a holiday. Fouad manages this house graciously and is a great source of information, and if you don't want to cook Aieda, who also cleans, makes superb breakfasts and dinners.

"Darsal, Essaouira. An Oasis of comfort offering a unique experience."
We enjoyed a near perfect holiday in this varied and interesting small coastal Moroccan town. The attractions were varied and we never tired of shopping for bargains in the Souk, walking along the beach to Cafe Vagabond or exploring the art galleries and sampling the restaurants. The local people were friendly and we appreciated the lack of hassle found in Marrakesh. We visited in March when the weather was excellent. On average 22c with a light breeze. Darsal is perfect for enjoying Essaouira. It is comfortable and spacious; renovated to a high standard and the roof terrace is ideal for quiet sun bathing. The house is well equipped and both the Manager and maid were extremely helpful. We will return.
Thank you for your lovely review. I am very pleased you enjoyed your stay and found everything in good order. Fouad and Aieda will always to their best to help you enjoy your stay.

Darsal was a perfect place to stay. It has been carefully restored with every attention to detail and with the rental person in mind. Fouad, the house manager, speaks good English and is always willing to help. We loved the close proximity to the souks yet the feeling that we were away from it all down our small alleyway. Local area very friendly and safe. No hassle at all.

We stayed here with our three young children in January 2013 and we all absolutely loved both the Riad and Essaouira. Darsal is a beautiful Riad, extremely well located in a quiet part of the Medina, yet close to everything.Fouad the houseman met us with a cart for our luggage from just outside the Medina Walls and it was just a short walk to the Riad. The Children loved their ride in the cart. The fact that this is a private Riad and we didn't have to share was perfect for us as we didn't need to worry if the children were being noisy and disturbing other guests which would be the case in other Riads. Darsal is fully equipped with everything you would need for your stay, down to Beach Towels and DVDs for the children. The open fire in the evening was also a bonus as the evenings are pretty cold that time of year. Daytime was lovely though sunny and very little wind. Fouad the Housman and Aieda the maid were also really helpful. We ate in a couple of nights and the food was very good.We wondered if 5 days would be too long to spend in Essaouria but we could have easily spent longer there and are planning to return soon . Hopefully Darsal will be available for us. We can't recommend it highly enough.

"Wonderful Riad, great value"
I am tempted not to review Darsal because it could become too popular and we will find it hard to get a booking, but this is just a fabulous place. It's in the heart of the Medina, down a narrow street, and really quiet and secluded. The facilities are excellent, the house beautifully restored and the staff attentive and friendly. Sally, the owner, makes sure that you have everything you need in advance like being met at the airport. Fouad and Aieda look after you brilliantly, and you have the amazing town right on your doorstep. UnqualIfied recommendation, but make sure you dont book it when we want to return!

"Fantastic family holiday"
Six of us stayed in this amazing riad in August. Spacious accomodation is beautiful, tiled floors and lots of mosaic detail over three floors. All bedrooms are ensuite, fantastic roof terrace. Our Guide ,Fouad, couldn't have been more helpful. We had a tour of Essuaria and he also organised our quad-biking trip which was a holiday highlight. Our maid, Aieda made us huge, delicious breakfasts and her tagines were better than any we ate out ! My daughter and I went with her to the hammam which was an experience definitely to try once, never been scrubbed so vigorously!! Beach is lovely, people all very friendly and accomodating. We all want to return here soon!

"Superb house in the heart of the Medina. Not to be missed"
We had a fantastic few days in Essaouria with our two girls (8 and 4) and were completely blown away by the stunning house and fantastic service provided by Sally, Fouad and Aieda. We could not have been better looked after. Sally organised a taxi from Marrakesh airport and Fouad was there to meet us and take out bags (and the girls) in a cart to the house. Each day Aieda cooked us a fantastic breakfast and looked after us so well. The girls loved every minute of being in the house which had children's books, dvds and lots of rooms to explore. My eldest daughter was delighted with her secret mezzanine bed and both were thrilled with their henna tattoos, which Aieda arranged to be done at the house. The house is beautifully restored, with lovely attention to detail. It was perfect with a family and we will be recommending it to our friends and relatives without hesitations. We had a brilliant break and would happily go back again and again. Thanks again to Sally, Fouad and most especially to Aieda for a very memorable holiday.

"We had the best time!"
We had a great experience at Riad Darsal. Booking was easy, we were met as promised at Marrakech airport and Fouad, house manger met us upon arrival. Overall Fouad is very professional, friendly and on top of everything. Aeeda, the housekeeper, kept us so very comfortable day to day and keeping everything clean: She is also a great cook and I recommend eating at home. She is a lovely person. The location could not be better for enjoying all the wonders of Essaouira...an easy walk to everything. We loved hanging out on the rooftop of Riad Darsal and watching the sun set. there is plenty to read about the wonders of Essaouira, so I won't go into it now, except to say, we love it there. We will most definitely return there as soon as we can, and look forward to our next stay at Riad Darsal...it kind of feels like home now!

"We had a lovely time altogether , giving us happy shared memories"
The staff are Darsal were extremely helpful and friendly. Definately ask for their expertise in advise on restaurants and things to do. Participating in a local Hammam with Aida was a fantastic experience, however be prepared for it being very different to the 'tourist one' . I would definately go for the traditional experience again. Buying fish from the local market , then finding a street BBQ (there tucked away in the back streets) and getting them to cook it for you, was the best way I have tasted fish. Perfection!

"Excellent base for medina experience"
Darsal is excellently located to give visitors an authentic taste of Essaouira. During our four visits to the riad, by engaging with Fouad, the local house guide, and Aieda, the maid, we've managed to experience and enjoy so much of local life. Fouad is very helpful. Arrivals and departures are always efficiently managed. He is a store of information and an hour in his company hearing his tales is fascinating. Aieda is a marvellous cook. Her beef tagine is a particular favourite of ours. The communal life of the medina, where things are shared, is perfectly demonstrated by Aieda and her interaction with us as guests. For us, getting involved with her and her young family has added greatly to the enjoyment of the holiday over and above the usual holiday activities. A visit to the hammam used by the locals, with her, is a real eye-opener. We shall never forget being taken by her to the sheep souk in preparation for Eid. However, if her brand of Moroccan hospitality does not appeal, then ask Fouad to explain your needs to her. The accomodation is simple, faithfully restored in Essaouiran fashion. The bedrooms are comfortable with very good en-suite facilities. Sitting in front of the log fire in the main salon on a chilly evening after the heat of the day is a treat.
