The Marrakech-Tensift-El Haouz Region
Essaouira has a very good climate - never getting too hot (seldom over 30 degrees). Can be windy, especially in the summer months, so good for wind sports for which it is famous. Spring time, September and October are beautiful months with the latter normally experiencing wonderful sunsets! Formerly a Portuguese colony, its medina is unusual in that it has wide streets and you have little hassle from vendors - unlike Marrakech! Friendly people and laid back atmosphere - a great place to relax and recharge.
For those wanting to explore, collective taxis and local buses are inexpensive. Car hire is about 25 euros per day for a small car. There is a market in the surrounding areas most days, the biggest being Had Draa on Sundays. You can also visit other beautiful beaches such as Sidi Kaouki (about 25 kms south) and Moulay Bouzerktoun (about 28 kms north). These also have long, golden bays but are much less busy than Essaouira - especially M. Bouzerktoun. Both attract lots of wind and kite surfers
If there are just a few people, I am normally happy to show you some of the beautiful, diverse countryside around Essaouira in my small car..
The Gnaoua festival is world renowned and this year is from 14 -17 May - it is early this year because of Ramadan. This year is the 18th anniversary. August has the Andulusian Festival with great fireworks, April has Les Printemps (spring) festival and there are many more in between.
There are many leather goods, traditional musical instruments, kaftans, babouche (shoes),wonderful spices etc to buy. And of course, Essaouira is famous for thuya wood (furniture and ornaments etc) and argan oil (which has more good properties than the best olive oil, which is also good here)- you can see the goats climb up the argan trees in the countryside - a sight to behold indeed. Good restaurants - Moroccan, French, Italian , traditional country food cafes - and good wines. Of course, being right on the Atlantic, the sea food is fabulous and very fresh.
Our extremely colourful small port and the long, golden beach are only 10 minutes leisurely walk from my house - if you can by-pass all the wonderful goods on offer. You can take lessons for kite and wind surf - or hire equipment if you are experienced - hire body boards or just swim. At the far end of the beach you can go horse or camel riding along the beach and up to Diabat (which is the Jimmy Hendrix village and also home to the new golf course). At that end of the beach there are some really nice restaurants there where you can lounge on sunbeds and enjoy delicious food or have a coffee or glass of wine. You can rent a quad bike or, for those who like life a little slower, a sun lounger. Car hire is around 25 euros per day for the smallest car. There are restaurants along the promenade and the work has almost finished in producing a beautiful promenade the length of the beach making it an even more beautiful place to walk.
Essaouira has a beautiful light which is adored by artists from around the world and is a wonderful, colourful place to paint.
