The Leidseplein is a square in central Amsterdam. Lying in the southwest of the canal district of Amsterdam, the Leidseplein is immediately northeast of the Singelgracht canal. It is situated on the crossroads of the Weteringschans, the Marnixstraat, and the Leidsestraat.

The Leidseplein is one of the busiest centres for nightlife in the city. Historically, the square was the end of the road from Leiden, and served as a parking lot for horse-drawn traffic. Today, modern traffic travels through the square and side streets are packed with restaurants and nightclubs. The Stadsschouwburg, a theater, is the most notable architectural landmark on the square, and the American Hotel is close by.

It is one of the most prosperous parts of Amsterdam. It is busy with economic activity and there is shopping with style in the Van Baelestraat and the PC Hooftstraat. Plenty of good restaurants and nice cafes bring charm and atmosphere. Near the Leidseplein is also home to the famous Vondelpark. The park is inspired by the English nature, meaning feeling like walking in the wildlife. When you have finished with your walk through the park: the great museums such as the Stedelijk Museum and the recently reopened Rijksmuseum are just a short walk away

Vondelpark

The Vondelpark is the largest city park in Amsterdam, and certainly the most famous park in the Netherlands, which welcomes about 10 million visitors every year. The Vondelpark is centrally located south of Leidseplein and near Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and Van Goghmuseum.

The Vondelpark is loved by Amsterdammers as well as by tourists, and is full of people - enjoying a sunny day, dog-walking, jogging, roller-skating, listening to music, people-watching, or just lazing about in grass. Free concerts are given at the open-air theater or in the summer at the park's bandstand. Other attractions are the statue of the poet Vondel, the cast iron music dome, the Groot Melkhuis with a playground for children, and the historical Pavilion with its restaurant Vertigo, a popular terrace opened in summertime. Theater, dance performance and music is played during June, July and August. The open-air theater (Dutch: Open Lucht Theater) takes place in Vondelpark, near the entrance from Eeghenstraat. Admission is free, but some performances are so popular that we advise you to make an on-line reservation via their website.

The museum district derived its name from the major museums in the district: the Rijksmuseum, Stedelijk Museum and an ode to the largest Dutch painter, Van Gogh Museum. They are all to be found on the Museumplein, where you will find the majestic Concertgebouw across the street.
