Description from owner

Description

Our family fell in love with the Lake District on our very first visit. Back then, one of our two children was in a child carrier, while the other was whingeing about having to go for yet another walk. Now seventeen years on, they're both too big to be carried and still whine whenever it is suggested that we go for a walk on the fells.

For a long time we have wanted our own property in the Lake District. Today we are the proud owners of Park Gates Lodge in Ambleside. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

This lovely Victorian cottage was once the home of the gate-keeper of Rydal Hall. Today it belongs to us, and although we shut the gates to keep the sheep out they don't stop the deer, who regularly help themselves to the garden. Scandale beck runs opposite the front of the house, which thanks to James is now complete with a rope swing. The house is in easy walking distance of the centre of Ambleside as well as Rydal Hall; complete with tea room providing excellent cake!

The property has been comprehensively modernised and refitted since we bought it, and guests routinely tell us that the cottage is much larger than they expected!

For 2016 we have added a new smart tv enabling guests to access their netflix or sky accounts, youtube and the various catch up tv channels we have all become dependent upon

Location description from owner

The England region

England's largest National Park includes Scafell Pike - its highest mountain, Wastwater - its deepest lake and thriving communities like Keswick and Bowness-on-Windermere.The Lake District National Park is in the northwest corner of England in the county of Cumbria. We've mountains, valleys, villages, towns, coastline and of course lakes! More than 8 million people visit the the National Park each year. With more than 3,500 kilometres of rights of way, you can walk, cycle and ride around the beautiful Lake District countryside to your heart's content. And of course you can also get on the water of our lakes and coastline.

Ambleside

Ambleside is predominately a walking town, complete with all the obligatory camping shops, art galleries, ice cream parlours, cafes, cinemas and pubs: the latter of which are in such abundance that despite visiting the Lakes for 18 years we still haven’t had a pint in all of them. There are also several restaurants, including The Glass House, which featured on Gordon Ramsay’s Kitchen Nightmares, now known as The Fulling Mill, which is actually really good! The local hotels provide spa facilities, as well as bike hire, and Lake Windermere offers lots of water sport opportunities which cater to varying moods, ages and energy levels. There are plenty of activities in this area for you, please contact the home owner for further advice.

“Stunning location”

Reviewed 7 Mar 2013

Walks straight from the door one way and Ambleside with great facilities, a 10 min walk the other way, The cottage was spacious and had everything you need and was homely. The river opposite was a real bonus for our boys who spent most evenings trying to catch the fish.

“Perfect cottage, we will return”

Reviewed 12 Aug 2012

We have been to the area before and this lodge house seemed perfectly located for the walks we wanted to do. We loved this lodge, very clean and comfortably furnished, easy parking, and detached from any other noise etc a perfect retreat. It is perfectly located close to Ambleside and rydal. The owners have thought of everything and it's a real credit to them. One of the best rental experiences for us to date

“Fantastic cottage in amazing location”

Reviewed 22 Jun 2012

We have been going to Ambleside for about 20 years & walked the 'coffin trail' countless times, always passing the cottage & admiring it. When we found it could be rented we didn't hesitate to book it. We have rented cottages before & found them to be glorified student accomadation, but Park Gate Lodge is exquisite! A real luxury finish to all the rooms makes it a home from home. Great communication from Patrick, the owner, ensured we had everything we needed for a great stay. The location couldn't be better, with the centre of Ambleside a 10 min walk away & access to loads of our favourite walks direct from the cottage. Would recommend to anyone who loves the great outdoors & the lakes in particular
