Key Info

Just metres from the River Arun and possibly in one of the most picturesque hamlet settings anywhere in Sussex, the Old Boathouse is a perfect base for up to four people.

Houghton Bridge nestles beside the River Arun just a mile from Amberley village. It is where the river cuts through the South Downs on its way to the English Channel. The Old Boathouse was once a working building and from its size and shape you can easily picture small river boats being built and worked on there.

Today it has been converted into very comfortable accommodation for four people. Set on the one level it is ideal for anyone with restricted mobility since it also has a very good sized bathroom with excellent bath and shower space. There are two bedrooms, one fitted with a double bed, the second with twin beds. The living room and kitchen space combine well at the front of the boathouse and at the front you step out onto a decked area that faces west making a pleasant area to relax in later afternoon and evening sun.

We're not sure how often you will want to eat in while staying at the Old Boathouse though. You are spoilt for choice when it comes to pubs and restaurants that are right on the doorstep. The Bridge Inn just two doors away is very popular with locals and visitors serving both pub classics as well as meals with a Meditteranean feel. Opposite the Bridge Inn, the Boathouse Restaurant is well known for its carvery. Cross the road and the Houghton Bridge Tearooms look out onto the ancient bridge that crosses the river as well as having glorious views west towards Bury Hill. A great stop off point for a rest and refreshment after a walk on the South Downs!

The West Sussex region

Arundel is dominated by the symbolic castle and the rising spire of the cathedral. It offers a plethora of craft and antique shops as well as restaurants and tearooms. It's a great place to wander and just enjoy its hospitality.Arundel Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Norfolk and is set in 40 acres of sweeping grounds and gardens. The castle has been seasonally open to visitors for nearly 200 years. It is one of the great treasure houses of England and is home to priceless works of art in stunning rooms. Climbing the 131 steps to the Keep which dates from the 11th century to take in the views over Arundel and The South Downs is definitely worth the effort.A mile away from the Old Boathouse in the other direction is the village of Amberley, a quintessential Sussex village full of chocolate box cottages, its own tearooms and a local pottery. Amberley borders onto the Wildbrooks giving fantastic views over the River Arun and some lovely walks north along the Arun Valley from the centre of the village.Three miles to the east of Amberley, is Parham House and Gardens an Elizabethan home that looks directly towards the South Downs. It often hosts a variety of events such as flower and garden weekends, craft fairs, as well as the Sussex Steam and Country Fair every June. The house and gardens are open from April to October.

Set right in the heart of the South Downs and where the South Downs Way crosses the River Arun this is an exceptionally beautiful area. Houghton Bridge is also home to the Amberley Working Museum, a museum that celebrates our industrial heritage. It is a 36 acre site created around the old lime burning kilns that are within a chalk quarry. It is worthwhile visiting since it will interest many. You can see details on the museum on our Places to visit pages under West Sussex. The Old Boathouse makes a perfect base for walking. In addition to the South Downs Way there are wonderful river walks as well as walks south over the Downs to Burpham village, giving great views to Arundel and the coast along the way. There is also a most interesting walk across the West Sussex Gurkha Suspension Bridge that links the villages of North Stoke and South Stoke by footpath giving a manageable walk to Arundel passing the Wildfowl and Wetland Centre on the way.
