The Algarve region
Altura is situated in the Eastern Algarve, with miles of lovely white sandy beaches. The village is nice and peaceful, The house is within easy walking distance to shops, restaurants and cafe bars. This part of the Algarve is more quiet and traditional, with less high rise properties. Altura has retained most of it's Portuguese charm. There is a laid back atmosphere where visitors can take a leisurely stroll along the beautiful beaches or, enjoy a drink and snack at one of the seafront bars. This is great walking territory. The East is very different compared to the rugged beauty found in the west of Faro. With less high rise properties and long stretches of golden sands. The tidal marshlands and small resorts along the coast have retained much of their character. Tourism here blends in well with local activities, Visitors can enjoy a more relaxed and tranquil way of life. with superb, less crowded beaches and warm waters.
In the evening, visitors can choose from a wide selection of bars and restaurants to suit all tastes, ranging from cheap and cheerful, to high quality cuisine. Car is not essential here. There are local bus or trains to explore surrounding areas. For nature lovers there are forest walks, cruises along the Guadiana River which borders between Spain and Portugal and is only a short bike ride away. There are nature trails along the Ria Formosa Reserve, where bird watching is in abundance. From here at Vila Real there is a ferry that crosses regularly each day to the border town of Ayamonte in Spain. A great place to spend time and enjoy the experience of a different country.
Other local beach resorts are a must to be explored. Only a short distance by car. Going further East is PRAIA VERDE, highly recommended with a hilltop restaurant overlooking the bay.Just next door CABECO beach is largely unspoilt and very peaceful, offering uninterrupted sand as far as the eye can see. By beach, woodland walk or by road you can continue on to the main local resort of MONTE GORDO which has many shops, bars, restaurants, beach cafes and the casino for the late nighters. Here there are lots of good hotels and opportunity for entertainment, very popular for the sun worshippers and strollers with its many sun loungers, shallow waters and flat walkways. Further east the busy town of VILA REAL de SANTO ANTONIO has shops, harbour, boat trips and the ferry to SPAIN. All this within 9Km of ALTURA.
Heading West on the En125 coast road, or on the Algarve Cycle Route are more lovely resorts, Manta Rota is within walking distance and has many places to eat and drink, more white sandy beaches and nature walkways. Next is Cacela with its lovely views of the bay and nice restaurants.
Continue on to the resort of Cabanas, a small harbour, with lovely walkways. Here for a small charge on the ferry can take you a short trip over to the beautiful beach where you can laze about in the sun or enjoy a meal at their restaurant.
Slightly further is the town of Tavira. About 15Km from Altura, this is an essential visit, As one of the regions oldest and most attractive places, you cannot fail to be enthralled by its unspoilt charm, character and tranquility. Walking along the cobbled streets you will see an abundance of history. A Roman bridge links the 2 parts of the town, across the River Gilao, each side with its own set of traditional old bars and restaurants There are many churches to view, along with the ancient castle, several monuments and the fishing moorings, leading to the River Formosa Natural Park. The local beach of Tavira is accessible by small ferry boat and boasts excellent restaurants with a great holiday atmosphere. A small train and horse drawn carriages are a great way for seeing the sights here and experiencing the atmosphere of a town where time stood still.
